RE-OPENING THIS FALL
D
ear ward 1 residents. I sincerely hope that everyone had a great summer and had the ability to enjoy some of the beautiful weather that our summer season brings. As we enter the fall season this year, many people get back into routines that the summer and Covid19 had interrupted. With Thanksgiving approaching we also want to give thanks for everything that we are fortunate to have. Hopefully families can get together this year and enjoy each others company in a safe environment. Sports and recreation are all set to go this fall with vaccination passports in place the hope is that the programs will not be interrupted again by the next wave as they all were last fall. Most city of Burlington programs and facilities are open again with Covid19 restrictions and vaccination proof required. We are asking the public to please be patient with staff as we all learn the new processes of access to facilities and programs. My family is very involved in hockey programs so I will be at several ice rinks throughout the winter
New events are returning to my schedule as well which were a big part of this job prior to the pandemic. This past moth I was fortunate to be invited to participate in the Tour d’Aldershot bicycle tour which was a 10km tour around Aldershot that was a fundraiser for Next Door social space. This is an annual fundraiser that assists them in preparing meals for those in need in partnership with Rolling Horse Bike shop located right beside them. In addition to the 10km bike ride there were 5km, 40km and 80km options for the serious riders. Maybe next year I will up my distance. My office has unfortunately lost my wonderful assistant Tara Thorp as she has taken a position with the fire department in Burlington. I’m certain that we will still see her at some future Ward 1 events but we wish her well in her new challenges. As we go through the process of replacing her there may be some delay in service requests so please be patient with us during this time. Stay safe and healthy, Kelvin Galbraith Ward 1 Burlington City and Regional Councillor

season as a coach, fan and participant. In terms of returning to in person work within city hall, we have deferred this decision until later this year. Many of city staff are working from home and are very comfortable doing so. We are looking at returning to a hybrid working model where some staff are working from home part time and in city facilities part time. As councillors, we do have offices on the 7th floor of city hall and many of us have been using them part time throughout the pandemic but not as they were used before. In person meetings are still not permitted within city hall so I have been doing some meetings at local coffee shops or at my fitness club on Plains road. Please reach out to me personally if you would like an in-person meeting and I would be happy to schedule you one.
FREE WI-FI
NOW IN SPENCER SMITH PARK The City of Burlington, in partnership with Cogeco, has launched FREE, PUBLIC-FACING WI-FI in Spencer Smith Park. The FREE Wi-Fi network is open to all park visitors daily and is available throughout most of the park. Park visitors can access the internet using a Wi-Fi-enabled device such as a laptop computer, tablet PC, or smart phone. The City's WiFi signal will display as "City of Burlington_Guest". When accessing the Wi-Fi at this location, users will be presented with, and required to accept, the "Terms of Use of the Wireless Network and Disclaimer." Burlington is a City where people, nature and businesses thrive. As residents continue to rediscover many of their favourite spaces and activities in the city, City services may look different as we work to stop the spread of COVID-19. The City's commitment to providing the community with essential services remains a priority. NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION Article and Photography by The Office of Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward
On September 30, Burlington observed the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day honoured the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.
8
The event at Spencer Smith Park included powwow dancers, a memorial walk and speeches on the effects of residential schools. The large crowd wore orange shirts which have become a symbol to honour the children who survived residential schools and remember those who did not.
"I'm just very grateful that my mother is here today, and she was a victim of the Mohawk residential school," said White Eagle. "Today, this is about recognition and being thankful for the survivors, because without the survivors, we wouldn't be here today. She chose to survive and she made it through."
Indigenous spiritual healer White Eagle said a prayer at the gathering and brought her mother to the stage.
Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward also attended the event.

"Today is really meant to be about listening and learning and working towards healing. To understand what really happened in our country, the truth of what really happened and the issues that still face indigenous people coast-to-coast, and right here in the City of Burlington," said Meed Ward. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

A SPECIAL EXHIBITION at the Joseph Brant Museum
CIPHER DECIPHER Cipher | Decipher is an interactive exhibition developed by Ingenium – Canada’s Museums of Science and Innovation, in partnership with the Communications Security Establishment (CSE).
Providing visitors with a rare and exciting opportunity to view an authentic Second World War Enigma cipher machine, Cipher|Decipher breaks down communications encryption: what it is, how it works, and how it affects our lives. The 500-squarefoot exhibition showcases a wide range of historic communications encryption artifacts on loan from the CSE, and contains both hands-on and digital experiences, as well as custom illustrations that visually demonstrate key processes in cybersecurity, and making and breaking ciphers. Visitors will be able to scramble their own messages using a cipher wheel, see how an Enigma cipher machine works, and tackle puzzles to learn if they have what it takes to work in the field of cryptology.
Also on view is a complementary mini-exhibition, Floriography: The Language of Flowers. Beyond their beauty, flowers can share deep and symbolic meaning. Sending flowers to a special someone can allow us to confide our true feelings or let a loved one know that we're thinking of them This meaning is taken a step further through what's known as "floriography", the Victorian era art of combining flowers to send coded messages - a language based entirely on flowers. Using images taken from the Museums of Burlington's collections and floriographies on loan from the Royal Botanical Gardens, visitors will uncover the subtle art of floriography and can even try their luck at decoding a bouquet mural for the chance to win a prize.
THE EXHIBITION RUNS FROM OCT 15, 2021 TO JAN 8, 2022
Museum hours of operation are Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00am to 3:30pm. In accordance with COVID-19 protocols, the Museums of Burlington has procedures in place to allow the public to safely enjoy the galleries and exhibitions currently on view. Visitors to the Museum are asked to pre-pay admission online for a designated entry time. Entry times are available on the 1/2 hour. Walk-in visitors will be accommodated space permitting.
LOCATION: Joseph Brant Museum TARGET AUDIENCE: All ages, families FEE: Included with regular museum admission CONTACT FOR TICKETS/RESERVATION: museumsofburlington.ca NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

Article and Photography By Peeter Poldre
The world-famous Snowbirds performed at the Canadian International Air Show on September 4th and 5th to the delight of the onlookers. Captain Steven Sparks from Hamilton and Corporal Justin Shantidatt from Mississauga provided some local connections to the fabulous flying team. Photos were taken at two separate locations, Norris Crescent Parkette in Mimico on the first day and the Sheldon Lookout at the mouth of the Humber River on the second day. 14

he Red Admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) is found in temperate regions world-wide. Only males with a territory are able to attract females for mating. The Red Admiral can be an unusually calm butterfly, as this one was at the Riverwood Conservancy while posing on a purple coneflower, thus allowing for photography at a close distance.
