FEATURE HOME

FLOW HOUSE By Dubbeldam Architecture | Photography by Riley Snelling

D

ubbeldam Architecture + Design unveils Flow House, a semi-detached Victorian house in midtown Toronto that has been reconfigured for a creative couple and their children. The transformation of the 130-year-old home included adding additional living space on the back and top of the home, improving connections to the outdoors, and updating the interior and rear yard for contemporary living. The traditional front façade remains, while the interior is now a meaningful reflection of the family’s unique personalities, vocations, and shared experiences.

12

PROJECT DETAILS TEAM: Heather Dubbeldam, Andrew Snow, Krystal Kramer, Scott Sampson, Gigi Presentey, Omkar Kulkarni LOCATION: Toronto, ON SIZE: 2,500 sq ft CONTRACTOR: DDF Contracting Ltd. CONSULTANTS: Blackwell Structural Engineers

Though less than five meters wide, with an added area of only 230-square-meters, the home now seems much larger through a strategy of compression and expansion. Narrowed interstitial spaces enclose, creating a feeling of compression, then open to larger spaces with lofty ceilings. And throughout there are moments of surprise and delight – the merging of interior and exterior spaces, the introduction of natural light in unexpected places, and the playful sculpting of elements that establish an organic quality to the home. ▹

13

Referencing one homeowner’s profession as a ceramicist, the notion of tactility and craft permeates the home through materials, forms, patterns, and textures. Suggesting a complementary hybrid of Scandinavian and Mediterranean influences, the wood cabinetry, screens, and flooring in warm white oak are accented by concrete and Carrara marble sinks, antiqued brass fixtures, and hand-molded clay pendants. A clean backdrop of white walls and shelving provides a blank canvas to showcase the family’s collection of art, tapestries, and sculpture from local artists, along with artifacts gathered during travels abroad and the owner’s own ceramics. Colour animates the interstitial spaces of the home – terra cotta tiles are laid in a herringbone pattern in the entry foyer, and a wall of geometric cerulean blue tiles defines the bar between the kitchen and dining room. Underpinned by an aesthetic of fluid contours – a deliberate contrast to the rectilinear floorplan – the house’s interior elements appear sculpted rather than built. The helical staircase connecting all four floors is a focal point that expresses the home’s sense of flow. Awash in natural light from the skylight above, the winding balustrade and natural oak treads cast shifting shadows throughout the day.

14

“Curvilinear forms are employed throughout,” says firm principal, Heather Dubbeldam. “Arched openings between rooms incite anticipation as they frame views of what lies beyond, resonating with curved walls, display nooks, the kitchen island and banquette, further enhancing the house’s sculptural sensibility.” In addition to utilizing the latest sustainable systems and materials to promote well-being, large windows and skylights provide abundant light, natural ventilation, and connections to the outdoors. Mahogany-framed, floor-toceiling sliding glass doors on the third floor provide access to a roof deck, while a similarly lofty door in the kitchen opens to the furnished back patio.

Similar spatial strategies continue in the design of the rear yard. The volumes of charcoal-coloured panels that comprise the new rear façade are stepped back on multiple planes to create a roof deck and recessed entrance. In the back garden, compression and expansion is further explored through narrowed planting beds that open to wider spaces designed for play, dining, and relaxation. The wooden pergola, brick pavers, and ochre outdoor furniture are a nod to the various temperate climates the family has experienced together, while the landscaping of lush plantings provide interest year-round. PRIORITIZE VENTILATION AND PERFORMANCE

WHERE ROUTINE BECOMES RITUAL

THE FOUNDATION BENEATH YOUR FEET

BATHROOM By Bobeche Interiors | Photography by Bobeche Interiors

Often overlooked, the bathroom is one of the most personal and essential spaces in the home. It is where the day begins and ends, where form meets function, and where design can transform the everyday into something extraordinary. Renovating this space is more than a practical upgrade it is an opportunity to reimagine how you live.

WHETHER YOU ARE REWORKING A COMPACT POWDER ROOM OR REDESIGNING A LUXURIOUS ENSUITE, THOUGHTFUL PLANNING CAN IMPROVE THE SPATIAL FLOW, ENHANCE LIGHTING, AND INTEGRATE MODERN COMFORTS THAT SUPPORT YOUR LIFESTYLE. A WELL-EXECUTED RENOVATION NOT ONLY ELEVATES THE EXPERIENCE OF DAILY LIFE BUT ALSO ADDS LASTING VALUE TO YOUR HOME. CREATE A SEAMLESS SENSE OF ST YLE The most compelling bathrooms feel cohesive with the rest of the home. While trends may be tempting, timeless materials and enduring finishes tend to age more gracefully and offer stronger resale value. Whether your aesthetic leans toward modern minimalism, transitional warmth, or classic refinement, consistency in tone and palette ensures a space that feels intentional and elegant. Cabinetry, in particular, is worth the investment. In many of my projects I work with solid hardwoods such as maple or birch offer superior durability in moisture-prone environments, maintaining their beauty and performance over time.

Good design extends beyond what is seen. A high-quality exhaust system is essential to preserve finishes, reduce humidity, and protect the longevity of your renovation—especially in compact spaces or condominiums where airflow can be limited.

Flooring should balance beauty with safety. Slip-resistant surfaces such as honed ceramic, textured porcelain, or natural stone provide both practicality and a refined aesthetic. Smaller tiles can offer additional traction while creating a balanced, tailored look in more compact bathrooms. On the walls, large-format tiles contribute to a clean, expansive feeling. In smaller spaces, consider vinyl wall coverings for a touch of texture, color, and personality—without compromising on durability or ease of maintenance. Bring in Comfort with Radiant Heat Radiant floor heating is one of the most rewarding upgrades in any bathroom renovation. It brings warmth and comfort, especially on cold mornings, while maintaining even temperatures and reducing moisture accumulation. Paired with stone or tile and controlled by a smart thermostat, this feature quietly enhances the daily experience.

ILLUMINATE WITH INTENTION Lighting plays a transformative role. A layered approach creates both function and atmosphere. Ambient lighting provides overall brightness. Task lighting, such as sconces or backlit mirrors, ensures clarity where it matters most. Accent lighting under-vanity LEDs or a pendant above the tub adds visual interest and a sense of serenity.

V

16

EVERY ELEMENT IN A SPACE SHOULD BE PROPORTIONAL TO THE ROOM. IN SMALLER LAYOUTS, A LARGE FREESTANDING TUB CAN FEEL IMPOSING. A SPACIOUS WALK-IN SHOWER OFFERS A SIMILAR SENSE OF INDULGENCE WHILE MAXIMIZING FLOOR AREA. Smaller Spaces: Custom or floating vanities provide ample storage and help visually open up the room. Wall-mounted faucets create a streamlined look and make cleaning easier supporting a design approach that’s both refined and functional. When selecting fixtures, prioritize craftsmanship and performance. Opt for solid brass construction, ceramic disc valves, and finishes that go beyond fleeting trends. Local Canadian brand VOGT exemplifies this philosophy, offering high-performance fixtures with understated elegance. Their collections such as Mond feature customizable handle colours and offer a wide range of style and finishes, including white, matte black, brushed nickel, and polished chrome.

INTEGR ATE TECHNOLOGY FOR EFFORTLESS LIVING Smart integrations enhance convenience without drawing attention to themselves. Mirrors with built-in LED lighting, anti-fog technology, and voice control offer functionality tailored to your routine. Motion-sensor lighting and programmable showers create seamless transitions between tasks while elevating the overall experience with thoughtful innovation.

REFINE WITH DETAIL It is the finishing details that bring the design to life. Invest in tactile elements such as plush towels, and accessories that speak to your style. Smart storage solutions such as built-in niches, floating shelves, and custom cabinetry maintain visual clarity and support a calm, spa-like atmosphere. A bathroom should do more than meet your needs. With thoughtful design and and creativity, this space becomes not just a functional room, but a deeply personal retreat. Here, comfort and beauty are not afterthoughts. They are essential. •
