If history is any indication we’re good to go. We’ve used a mix of metal finishes in everything from our jewelry to our wardrobe and our fixtures for years. Thankfully, the movement is getting lots of support from manufacturers who are making it easier to find what we want for our homes.

THE BRONZE AGE STARTED IT ALL But let’s take a leap back in time to see where it all began. The Bronze age, around 3000BC was the dawn of urban civilization. For decorative and functional purposes, metal arts were crafted from the “ores of the earth,” including bronze, gold, tin, lead, silver, copper and iron, and metal alloys such as aluminum. The art of transforming raw metals into beautiful and useful items continued to evolve through time, making advancements during the Italian Renaissance through the Industrial Age, and it continues today. After centuries of refinement, metals can be processed to be as thin and fine as a hair or as large as a bus.

PERMISSION GR ANTED TO MIX METALS Most people love the sparkle and glow that metal finishes provide. But if you need a formal invitation to use a mix in your room decor, kitchen or bathroom, here it is. I hereby grant you permission to add more than one metal into your décor. It is no longer considered taboo, embrace the change and please feel free to add another metal finish to the matching polished brass faucets and towel bars. Today, faucets and taps are not just hardware items that add function to your plumbing needs, they are a graphic component to your interior design. They can set the tone and help define your personal design style. MIXING METALS, WHERE DO YOU START AND STOP? I like to think that there are no rules, but if you want some pointers, here’s what I recommend. All metals go together as long as you repeat it as an element throughout the room. For instance, if you have a warm black stainless faucet, add cool polished nickel

or chrome door handles on your cabinets and repeat the black stainless in your towel bars. If you’re combining metals in the shower, repeat that combination at the sink. Repetition means it’s purposeful, not a mistake. If in doubt, use matte black or rubbed bronze as a bridge in your décor to balance metals like gold and silver. Matte black helps by grounding the scheme and the contrast enhances the metals you are using. Coloured metals like champagne bronze, gold, and brushed nickel are warm metals and look great with black. If you want to add warmth to white add warm metals. If you have a lot of grey, add gold. Anything grey can be lifted in energy by adding a warm metal. Mixing metals isn’t new but it may be to you. The bottom line is you should surround yourself in what you love. If you love multiple metal finishes, find ways to incorporate them into your home. It’s all about feeling happy where you live. ◆

Frutto Proibito gloriously combines different archival Fornasetti motifs from the 1940s and 50s. The playful composition of flora and fauna is quintessentially Fornasetti, mixing lifelike etchings with decadent, bold prints. Whilst Dawn captures the first bright light of an early morning showing soft sage clouds rise into puffs of mint and duck-egg before diffusing into a hazy blue spring sky; Dusk captures the changeful evening sky where whirls of sunset pink clouds move through muted violet before diffusing into a summery soft blue. Piero Fornasetti had a deep love and admiration for music and theatre finding a wealth of inspiration from the Italian Commedia dell’arte. From this came the delightful Teatro. As charming today as it was then, Teatro was conceptualized in the 1950s. The scene is enthralling with intricate line work depicting elegant theatre goers. A delicate recolouring in the soft rose tones of Ballet Slipper plays towards the design’s theatrical inspiration, whilst the traditionally tasteful Racing Car Green is derived from timeless Fornasetti palettes of deep jade and emerald tones.

Uccelli, meaning birds, originated as luxurious folding screens depicting vibrantly coloured birds of all species adorning sparse branches. Since translated to a beautifully intricate wallcovering panel design, this delicate motif brings an ornate quality to a stand-alone feature wall or, used in repeat, creates a stunning aviary rich in detail and colour. Cole & Son has updated this arresting study with two new unique colourways, Ballet Slipper pink and Cerulean Sky. A smaller scale version of the mural Nuvole, Nuvolette is one of the most enduring Fornasetti designs. The sky was long a recurring vision for Fornasetti and these ‘little clouds’ are delicately detailed etchings depicting tempestuous, rolling skies. The Fornasetti collection introduces new metallic, lustered colourways of Gilver and Charcoal, and Pearl creating endless movement across this enchanting design.

Originally conceptualized in the late 1940s for the entrance hall of Piero Fornasetti’s Milan residence, Mediterranea is a sprawling cityscape of roofs, domes, and windows. Each detailed element of the scene is brought to life through radiant Metallic highlights and bold line work, with striking ground hues of White and Charcoal. The Procuratie facades of St Mark’s Square in Venice provide a primates’ playground for these mischievous monkeys, wrapped around the classical arches and ornate balustrades. Drawn in a simple intaglio style, the timeless soft palettes of Stone and Powder Blue, and Soot and Snow enhance the intricate line work without detracting from the design’s stunning scene. An avid collector of literature volumes on the applied arts, Fornasetti used books as a recurring theme which can be found throughout the Atelier’s archive. This library Trompe l’oeil scene, Ex Libris, abundant in leather-bound books, is adapted from a 1953 screen. The Forest colourway comprises of pine and fern green deliciously accented with bright tones of rich tomato, cerise and decadent saffron creating a vibrant and conversational wallcovering.

The intricate curves and ripples of semi-precious stones and fossils appear throughout Fornasetti’s work, with the hypnotic curves becoming synonymous with the Fornasetti canon. In its newest iteration, the iconic Malachite is presented in unique luminous mineral shades with airy Parchment and subtle Gold, and smoky Charcoal and Silver for a captivating wallcovering. ◆
