Chippenham’s heart, where historic buildings and riverside walks meet everyday town life

LIFE IN SUTTON BENGER Sutton Benger is in Wiltshire on the southern edge of the Cotswolds, five miles northeast of Chippenham. The village balances rural character with modern facilities, a strong community spirit, and historical buildings. There are local amenities at hand, including a primary school, GP surgery, village hall, and a good selection of pubs and restaurants. The village hall supports a thriving community spirit with groups such as Benger Bears pre-school, Women’s Institute, over-60s WI along with a full calendar of social events each weekend. The recreation ground and multi-use games area offers a base for many community sports including rugby, football, and cycling.

R IC H I N H I S T ORY With a history dating back to 854 AD, when its land was granted to Malmesbury Abbey, the village of Sutton Benger grew around the road connecting Chippenham and Swindon. At the time of the 1086 Domesday Book, a settlement ‘Draicote’ was recorded with 22 households. It was later known as Sutton Leonard or Sutton Juxta Bradenstoke. Its current name ‘Sutton Benger’ first appeared in records from the 14th century. By the Tudor period, the village and surrounding farmland formed part of the Draycot Estate, owned by the Long family who were significant landowners in the area, right up until 1920. Draycot House, once the seat of the Long family, was a major estate in the area until it was demolished in 1950s, although large oak trees remain from the famous Deer Park of the estate.

The Wellesley Arms pairs rustic charm with great food and a friendly local atmosphere.

Over time, Sutton Benger was the location for cottages and houses for estate staff, such as butlers and senior staff of Draycot. In 1934 the civil parish of Draycot Cerne and Seagry were merged into Sutton Benger. For centuries, Sutton Benger connected Swindon, Chippenham, Oxford, and Bristol, but the creation of the M4 in the 1970s surpassed this.

Visit the historical sites of interest in Sutton Benger: The Wellesley Arms was built in the early 1800s and has long associations with the estate, historically serving as a licensed hostelry on the estate. All Saints Church, Sutton Benger is a Grade II* listed church. It has 12th-century origins with a 15th-century tower; it underwent heavy restoration in 1851. St James’s Church, Draycot Cerne (now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust) dates from c. 1260–1280 and is Grade II* listed.
