LIVY SCANLON

Artistic Director of THT Rep

Dear friends,

We're grateful you're here to cure midwinter blues with a little Midsummer magic! At THT Rep, we make theatre by and for Worcester; by joining us tonight, you complete that circle. Thank you, and welcome home.

I first encountered this production of Midsummer in the fall of 2024 at WPI, where Drs. Moncrief and Lucie staged it with students in the campus’s Little Theatre. Immediately, I knew a professional version belonged here in the BrickBox.

At its heart, this production celebrates the mad ones—those who don’t fit, who refuse rigid categories, who move through the world sideways. In The Wood, outsiders aren’t punished; they’re powerful. They spark change, create beauty, and remind us that society only grows when we are brave enough to imagine or live in it differently.

So step inside and surrender to the chaos. And when you leave The Wood, take its spirit with you—get in good trouble, love wildly, and make the world outside the theatre as joyful as the one you find here. Party on,

Learn about THT Rep's next show, Who Is Eartha Mae?, at TheHanoverTheatre.org/EarthaMae.

DR. KATHRYN M. MONCRIEF

Director of A Midsummer Night's Dream

A Midsummer Night’s Dream remains a favorite because it is, at heart, a play about relationships—friendships, family bonds and, of course, love. It invests deeply in what draws and holds us together and the pressures that threaten to pull us apart.

In this particular moment, our production explores questions that resonate urgently as the lives, bodies, and joy of marginalized communities suffer renewed scrutiny. Who are we allowed to love? Where can we shed our armor and be seen? In a world of cruelty, peril, and loss, what magic—what acts of imagination—allow us to create a freer, more inclusive world?

In our new adaptation, Shakespeare’s enchanted Athenian forest becomes The Wood, a 1980s nightclub where glamour, desire, danger, camaraderie, performance, and liberation co-mingle. Over the course of a single night, the club becomes a site of enchantment, discovery, and transformation, not just an escape but an opportunity to see how imagination is empowering even in the most fraught of times. We invite you to experience the sanctuary of chosen family and the truth that love—messy, chaotic, defiant, necessary, life-giving— remains the most subversive magic we have.
