DIRECTOR’S NOTE Anaïs Mitchell’s Hadestown is a political story, a love story, and a coming of age story. It asks us to explore the tensions between artistic expression and capitalism. It reminds us of the bittersweet compromise between life and death. It allows us to recognize and honor new love, old love, and lost love. And with such strong influences from the New Orleans jazz scene and American folk artists, it’s the perfect playground for young actors to develop their skills. In her book “Working on a Song,” Anaïs writes, “What is seen and heard onstage is the blooming flower, but most of the plant is underground. Every line, verse, or chorus - every idea any of us who worked on it ever had, even the ones that never saw the light of day - they’re down there. They’re the roots of the plant, and the flower wouldn’t exist without them.” It’s the same for us too, that what you will witness onstage is the blooming flower, but the roots of this plant remain in the studios. This is where the students were not only performers but central collaborators who developed their creative voice by acting in a myriad of roles throughout the process. There were many brilliant ideas, beautiful attempts, and valuable mistakes that were left behind. But what has carried over is the rigor, dedication, playfulness, and joy that has permeated throughout our entire theatre-making process. I feel extreme gratitude to everyone for trusting me to guide our blooming flower toward the sun. Working with these young people gives me so much hope for our future and I am filled with splendor as I watch them tell this beautiful story. With light,

ABOUT THE YOUTH ACTING COMPANY The Youth Acting Company was created to provide young, capable actors with three unique performance opportunities throughout the year. This resident company is comprised of students between the ages of 14 and 19. Company members must attend three to five rehearsals per week and enroll in two or more conservatory classes throughout the year. Performance venues include the mainstage, the BrickBox Theater, and Francis Carroll Plaza, as well as other area venues or schools when touring.
