For Frederick Gunn, the best lessons were the lessons students carried with them. More often than not, those were lessons that grew out of experience, because Mr. Gunn believed that encounters with the world offered something that a classroom lesson alone could not. For him, an avid athlete, lessons about character and teamwork were to be found in the game. He was 175 years ahead of his time, practicing an early form of what we now call place-based education.
