Teamwork Dear Green Vale Families & Friends, Each year when I see the rosters of donors to Green Vale, I am moved by the incredible generosity of so many. It is just as gratifying to see a name re-join the list after a hiatus as it is to see the every-year stalwarts who have stood by Green Vale so consistently. The headline from the 2018-2019 year is of course the on-time and within-budget completion of a new all-school library, technology and science facilities, plus brand new academic and common spaces for the entire Upper School. The full project was funded by donors to the New Gear capital campaign, whose generosity helped us exceed our goal. The theme of this school year is “Teamwork”, which feels very apt at this moment in Green Vale’s trajectory. It was Teamwork that drove the construction planning and fundraising; it was Teamwork that allowed the students to flourish despite a year in temporary classrooms; and it was Teamwork that established the vision for what type of learning we care most about as an institution. Serena thanked everyone who works to craft the GVS student experience, from the custodial staff to Upper School Director Cathy Iannotta. To her classmates, she said: "You are my family— a family with 41 brothers and sisters. And if you just came here in 7th Grade, we welcomed you into our family with no hesitation. I honestly can’t remember a time when everyone in our grade wasn’t together.”
Peter Zaloom, Science Teacher and Class Dean The 8th Grade chose Peter Zaloom to deliver the Address to Graduates on the eve of his retirement after 50 years at Green Vale. In addition to pithy advice, his remarks included some lines of original rap, including: “You were fun to be with, every day / I almost told the boss I’d work for half the pay! / Messing with test tubes, beakers & fire / You were great in the lab, you know I’m no liar. / Leaving the class you’d say ‘Thank you, Mr. Z.’ / I’d say to myself, ‘Who’s got it better than me?’”
