THIS IS HOW DENTAL CARE SHOULD FEEL
TREATMENTS AVAILABLE s
Dental care should feel calm, personal and unhurried - an experience where patients feel listened to, reassured and confident that their individual needs come first, with appointments available when they need them. That is exactly what patients can expect when they visit our recently transformed Advanced Dentistry clinic in Corstorphine. Now one of the most comprehensive dental centres in Edinburgh, our St John’s Road clinic has been thoughtfully designed around patient comfort, helping appointments feel less daunting from the moment people arrive. The environment is welcoming and reassuring, with modern facilities that support calm, confident care. But patient-centred care is about much more than surroundings.
Now accepting new private and dental plan patients.

All your dentistry needs under one roof
Preventative care to help avoid problems before they occur
Our team of 25 professionals takes the time to understand each patient, explain their options clearly and help them make informed decisions about their oral health. Prevention is central to this approach, with regular monitoring and proactive care helping patients maintain healthy smiles and address potential issues early, before they become more serious.

All dental needs in one location When more advanced treatment is needed, patients can benefit from an exceptional breadth of skills within the practice, making it easier to receive joined-up care in one familiar location rather than travelling between multiple practices.
Caring for all the family
Good dental care should support every stage of life - from helping children develop healthy habits early on, to maintaining oral health in adulthood, or restoring confidence in later years. Whatever the need, the focus is on helping each patient achieve the outcome that is right for them. Dental membership plans are available from £25.50 per month, giving patients another way to manage the cost of regular care. NHS treatment is also available for children and adults under 26 as part of Advanced Dentistry’s offering.
Whether someone is attending for a routine appointment, considering cosmetic treatment or needs more complex restorative care, the principle remains the same. Every appointment is an opportunity to listen, reassure and provide care that feels right for you.
Because at Advanced Dentistry, every visit matters. 25

Murrayfield Community Council (“MCC”) holds public meetings online and in person.
Murrayfield Community Council
Helping local people have their say.
Our next meeting is on the 17th of November.
Plans for self-storage in Roseburn submitted
Plans for Balgreen mobile phone mast refused
There are plans to put 33 self-storage containers in the Roseburn industrial estate. They would be on a spot behind the sorting office and next to the tram tracks, accessed from Roseburn Street. The Community Council might prefer a more “active” light industry use of this space. We mention it in case you’ve been looking for a local storage unit.
The Community Council and many others wrote to object to a plan to put service boxes and a 20 metre high mobile phone mast on the junction island of Balgreen Road and Glendevon Park. We thought the siting and visual effect of the plan was poor. But others wrote to support it and there is still a lack of some types of good mobile service in the area.
Russell Road and Roseburn/ Union Canal Link futures
Our winter meetings are online but still public
There is a Phase 2 for the Roseburn to Union Canal Link active travel route. It includes the north section of Russell Road, where the eastern pavement might be looked at. This is not supposed to be used by people on bikes but often is. Plans have not yet been drawn up. Public engagement is expected in late spring/early summer 2027. But there are doubts that anything will be done before 2030 because of the legal process.
Over the winter, meetings are on Zoom and you can ask for a link invitation by emailing secretary@murrayfieldcc. org.uk. We return to in-person meetings in the spring and are hoping to arrange hybrid access to them.
Or find details of our meetings and documents here: www.murrayfieldcc.org.uk/meetings

The word flexible comes from the Latin word flexus, which means “to bend.” Flexibility is the degree to which an individual muscle will lengthen. Stretching increases flexibility, which will help you perform daily activities and reduce the risk of muscle, joint and tendon injuries. Stretching also improves circulation, increasing blood flow to the muscles. Increased blood flow provides more nourishment to the muscles and gets rid of more waste by-products in the muscle tissue itself. Improved circulation can also help speed up recovery time if you suffer a muscle injury. What’s more, stretching can help eliminate or decrease low back pain, one of the most common kinds of structural pain, affecting a large percentage of the population. Muscle tightness in the quadriceps, hamstrings, hip flexors, and low back muscles is a common cause of low back pain. Stretching these muscles will often eliminate the pain. Keep in mind that every joint is tied to another joint, so if one muscle is tight, it is going to affect another joint or muscle. One of the greatest benefits of stretching is that you’re able to increase your range of motion, which means your joints can move further before an injury occurs. Stretching after you exercise (at least after you’ve warmed up a bit) has proven to be much more effective than

As we age, our muscles tighten and range of motion in our joints decreases. This can impact even the most active lifestyle and hinder your normal day-to-day activities. Tasks that used to be simple, like zipping up a dress or reaching for a can off the top shelf, may become extremely difficult. A regular stretching program can help lengthen your muscles and make daily activities routine again.

pre-workout stretches, because by the time you’ve completed your workout, the muscles are “warm.” Post-exercise stretching also helps reduce soreness, improves workout recovery, and ensures muscle and tendons are working properly. There are no disadvantages to stretching - unless, of course, you do them improperly, which is actually easy to do if you don’t know what you’re doing. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before starting any stretching program:
DON’T bounce when stretching; hold your position for the specified time. DON’T stretch cold muscles; always do some type of warm-up for at least five minutes: jogging in place, walking on a treadmill, light jump rope, etc. DON’T overstretch. There should be a little discomfort, especially if you’re not used to stretching, but it should not be painful. DON’T stretch a muscle improperly. If you are not sure of the proper stretch or how to perform it, get some assistance from a professional. Ross McDonald & Rebecca Vickery Registered Chiropractors

One Idea for Christmas
by John Barrett - former local Member of Parliament and Councillor
A
s the nights draw in and the cold weather approaches, Christmas trees and lights are now starting to appear outside public buildings, ready for the Festive Season, which is just around the corner. Supporting local traders and other businesses, such as those who advertise in The Murrayfield Grapevine, is more important than ever. Many small businesses have had a tough year, with increased running costs, and the Christmas and New Year period is a very important trading period for them. Many of whom can provide a personal service or a unique gift, all within walking distance of home.
Recently I returned from a visit to Africa, where for some of the time I stayed in a tent and as many of us experience on holiday it is possible to live out of one suitcase. It makes a stark contrast to the massive amount of stuff we keep, but often don’t use, back at home and which we add to over the Christmas period when we buy lots in the run up to Christmas, then even more in the January sales. It also let me see once again how families exist living in one room no larger than a garden hut, with no water, electricity or sanitation. The contrast between some people’s lives out there and over here is hard to describe. There were many people who were happy without many of the material items considered essential in the west. The importance of family life and parents spending time with their children was valued in a way that it is sometimes easy to forget. We have all gathered many personal possessions that the next generations will have little interest in, but one thing they will treasure is if you take the time to write your own memories down, or better still, produce a photo-book with important photos of events, memories and people with notes as to what is in each photo. I have many photo albums left by my parents, but with no idea who everyone in them is. As Christmas approaches, what better gift for the next generation than to have taken the time to produce the story of your own life.

Miso cod and crispy rice salad Soy, sesame, cucumber and rice are pretty much a marriage made in heaven, full of the bold flavours of South-East Asia. Serves 4 Preparation time 20-25 minutes, plus marinating Cooking time 45-50 minutes Ingredients • 100g miso glaze (store-bought) • 4 x 180g cod loins For the crispy rice salad • 2 x 250g packets of microwave basmati rice or 500g cooked rice • 1 tbsp sesame oil • 1 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp sesame seeds • ½ cucumber, chopped into small cubes • A good handful of sugar snap peas (about 100g), sliced lengthways • 2 tbsp chopped coriander • 1 tbsp chopped mint, or a few small mint leaves For the salad dressing • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar • 2 tbsp mirin • 2 tsp sesame oil • Juice of 1 lime 38
Recipe from “John and Lisa’s Midweek Dinners” by John Torode and Lisa Faulkner, published by Quadrille, price £25, with photography © Dan Jones.
Method 1. Pour 25g of the miso glaze onto each cod loin, spreading it out evenly. Leave to marinate for about 30 minutes or up to 4 hours (or overnight if you can).
No two lives are the same, so no two funerals should be either. Whether it’s a traditional service or something completely bespoke, we help you plan a tribute that truly remembers them.

2. For the crispy rice salad, mix the cooked rice with the sesame oil and soy sauce, ensuring the grains are well separated. Sprinkle over the sesame seeds and mix through again. 3. Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. Spread the rice out on a baking tray and cook for 30 minutes, giving it a good stir a few times during cooking. 4. Meanwhile, make the salad dressing by whisking all the ingredients together in a small bowl. Set aside. 5. Once the rice is golden and crispy, remove from the oven and transfer to a large heatproof bowl. Add the chopped cucumber, sugar snaps, coriander and mint, then stir through the dressing. This can be served warm or cold. 6. When ready to cook the cod, roast in the baking tray in the oven for 12-15 minutes. 7. To serve, spoon the crispy rice onto serving plates and serve the miso cod on top or alongside. 39

Music makers From Beethoven to Bowie – meet the maestros who defined how sound has changed over the generations.
The Great Composers by Wendy Thompson This beautifully illustrated history provides an impressive guide to more than 100 of the most influential composers of classical music – from the pre-eminent Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, continuing up to modern composers such as Carter, Boulez and Stockhausen. It covers the life and times of each one, listing their most important works and placing them in their historical context.
David Bowie and the Search for Life, Death and God by Peter Ormerod Taking readers from a choirboy childhood to Tibetan Buddhism, this illuminating biography of pop music’s shapeshifting genius focuses on Bowie’s perpetual search for spiritual enlightenment. Taking his spiritual explorations and faith seriously, Ormerod shows us how this quest for meaning propelled Bowie through his darkest moments and biggest successes, lending his music a timelessness and depth that has spoken to so many people across the world.
With a Little Help from Their Friends by Stuart Maconie Four lads from Liverpool have taken their place alongside Shakespeare as one of our key cultural exports to the world, a world they changed and remade in their own image in a blaze of creativity. But they had a little help along the way. Here Maconie pays tribute to the extraordinary cast of supporting characters who helped raise the Fab Four to superstardom.

Respect: The Life of Aretha Franklin by David Ritz This is the definitive life story of one of the greatest talents in all American culture, who time and time again stubbornly found a way to triumph over her troubles. Franklin began life as the golden daughter of a progressive and promiscuous Baptist preacher. She went on to leave her sons and her native Detroit for New York to start her quest for fame. 52

Autumn’s final flourish By Caroline Knight
Enjoy November in all its surprising glory while preparing for next year’s spectacular show. November brings mist, long nights and some chilly days, but it can be a magnificent month. Golden, orange and red leaves adorn borders where stems and berries are showcasing the benefits of certain shrubs. It’s a great time for planting, so bring some of those visual delights to your own garden if it’s lacking. Light is in short supply, making it vital to go outdoors whenever you can.

True colours Some of the brightest interest at this time of year is provided by berries on shrubs such as Pyracantha (firethorn), Cotoneaster and Ilex (holly). They provide a winter larder for many birds. The colourful stems of Cornus (dogwood) add dazzling red, orange, lime green and yellow radiance to borders throughout the winter, especially if they were pruned down to the ground back in early spring. They can be as spectacular as any flower border when planted in bold, contrasting groups. Top tips for November • Plant as many tulip bulbs as you can squeeze into your pots and borders, so you’ll be able to anticipate a joyful spring show. If squirrels tend to dig them up, pop holly leaves into the planting holes so that the rodent rogues receive prickles whenever they nibble.
• Cover your beds with a generous mound of home-made compost or mulch, remembering to give tender plants such as Agapanthus (African lily) and Kniphofias (red hot pokers) an extra layer of padding. • Prune roses to help prevent wind-rock. • Avoid cutting spring-flowering shrubs now; you’re likely to cut off the flowering buds. • Do not prune stone fruit trees in winter. They are susceptible to diseases like bacterial canker and silver leaf. • Clear leaves from ponds, paths and lawns but not from borders where they will provide food and habitat for wildlife. • Leave your seed heads and fading blooms intact; they will be appreciated by birds and bees at a time they’re most needed. • Purchase and plant bare-root shrubs and trees now. • Add mycorrhizal fungi to planting holes. It forms a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship with roots, which helps the plants for their entire life.
• Don’t forget to water newly planted trees and those still Pyracantha berries establishing from last season. Their roots take time to grow and, if it’s dry, they’re unlikely to be able to • You can tidy your borders a little and access enough moisture. move things around, including splitting and replanting herbaceous perennials while there is warmth in the soil. 56
• Raise outdoor pots and containers off the ground to help prevent waterlogging. 57
