Restrictions are gradually lifting however all of the usual Edinburgh events for Christmas and Hogmany are not yet confirmed for publication. Please watch the Underbelly website for details that should be revealed soon. The usual holiday information is available on page 44, and Christmas post dates can be found on page 32. Keep your Spine in Shape Celebrating 40 years of beautiful bespoke handmade kitchens, designed and produced in the Borders

Your spine is the backbone of your entire body – literally and figuratively. That means poor spinal health may negatively impact you from head to toe. How can you keep your spine in shape?

EXERCISES (to Do & Not to Do)

NUTRITION ESSENTIALS

Some common exercises help promote spinal health in the form of proper posture while others promote poor posture and put the spine at risk. A strong core supports the spine, whereas a weak core can lead to pain and injury. To build the core, think bent-leg knee raises, stability ball exercises and other exercises that strengthen the core muscles (remembering to keep your spine protected at all times by avoiding rounding the back / neck). On the other hand, avoid exercises / movements that unduly stress the spine: slumping while sitting and bending forward immediately after sitting come to mind, as do exercises that make you prone to rounding your back (traditional sit-ups, toe-touches, etc.). Please seek exercise advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Believe it or not, certain foods promote a healthy spine (and vice versa). For example, adequate water intake is necessary to nourish not only the body’s cells, but also the spinal intervertebral discs. As you might imagine, water helps keep the discs (and thus the spine) from getting stiff and becoming subject to injury. In addition, an antiinflammatory diet is key to preventing back pain and other spine problems due to inflammation. Think foods such as omega-3 fish and lean proteins, fresh produce, avocado and olive oil while reducing intake of pro-inflammatory foods (most fast foods and processed foods, sugar-laden sweets, etc.).

SLEEP MATTERS Your sleep position and the overall quality of your sleep play a big role in spinal health. The ideal position for the spine during sleep places you on your back with a pillow underneath the knees. As you might imagine, lying on your stomach is the worst position. Your pillow and mattress also matter, so make sure you choose the right ones for you, or your spine will let you know with neck and/or back pain. (Talk to your healthcare professional for suggestions.)

CHIROPRACTIC CARE No conversation about spinal health would be complete without mentioning chiropractic, an entire health care profession founded on the principle that a healthy, properly aligned spine may have far-reaching effects on the entire body. Research asserts chiropractic’s effectiveness in treating back pain, neck pain and various other musculoskeletal conditions, and the goal of chiropractic care is to improve spinal health and help prevent pain from returning. Murrayfield Community Council (“MCC”) held meetings via Zoom on 5 October 2021. Please see the MCC website for the full Minutes of meetings.

www.murrayfieldcc.org.uk Traffic and Transport 1. A decision on the introduction of Controlled Parking Zones in parts of the city has been postponed until after next year’s Council elections, as has a trial of match day parking permits for the areas around BT Murrayfield, Tynecastle and Easter Road. 2. The City Centre West to East Cycle Link and Street Improvements project (“CCWEL”) received final approval from the Finance Committee on 7 October and the contract has been awarded to Balfour Beattie. Construction work is expected to begin early in 2022. 3. Roseburn Primary School - There are now three lollipop persons in place - outside the School, at the crossing near the Murrayfield Bar and at the foot of Murrayfield Avenue. Roseburn Place continues to be a dangerous rat run and source of concern. Road Safety on Ellersly Road & Kinellan Road MCC has for many years been pressing the Council for pavement widening and a crossing/island on Ellersly Road and more recently for traffic calming measures on Kinellan Road. Although recent traffic monitoring data show not only that the 20mph speed limit is widely ignored, but that speeds dangerously in excess of 30 and 40 mph are regular occurrences, MCC has been told that these locations do not meet the Council’s criteria for traffic calming measures. MCC has not asked for such measures in Ellersly Road, but hopes to build a case that Kinellan Road presents exceptional circumstances justifying such measures.

Future Meetings AGM and Ordinary Meeting via Zoom, Tuesday, 9 November 2021 starting at 7.30pm. AGM is expected to last less than

30 minutes. These are public meetings. Please email secretary@murrayfieldcc.org.uk if you wish to receive a Zoom invitation. Please see the MCC website www.murrayfieldcc.org.uk – for the full Minutes of meetings.

Cyclists’ Safety The Police have been running Operation Close Pass to educate drivers on how to pass cyclists safely. The minimum passing distance is 1.5 metres. Herbert Protocol The Police have launched the Herbert Protocol, which enables family members or carers of people with dementia, who are likely to go missing, to provide the Police with information to assist with a rapid response if that were to happen. Charles H Mackie Plaque MCC has installed a plaque commemorating local artist Charles H Mackie in Roseburn Park opposite the site of his studio (now occupied by Murrayburgh House). The plaque will be unveiled by Pat Clark, author of a biography of the artist, on Wednesday, 10 November at 11.30 am. Christmas tree on the Old Colt Bridge, Roseburn The Council will provide a Christmas tree and lights at Roseburn. St George’s School will decorate the tree and Roseburn Primary School will decorate the west side of the Bridge below the railings. Any local community groups interested in holding Christmas events on the Bridge are encouraged to contact secretary@murrayfieldcc.org.uk to be put in touch with the organisers. Social engagement – Young Person WANTED MCC is keen to represent as broad a spectrum of the local community as possible and to that end would like to recruit a young person (under 30). This might be of interest to a senior school student or someone older who is interested in local government, politics or journalism. Anyone interested in finding out more is encouraged to contact the MCC secretary at the email address above.

Glendevon Gardening Services

By John Barrett - former local Member of Parliament and Councillor

Like many others I was shocked and saddened by the recent death of Sir David Amess MP, who was knifed to death while holding his weekly meetings with his constituents. Something I did for nearly 20 years as both a Councillor and then as an MP.

A professional fine gardening service Services Provided Include :

It sent a shiver down my spine, as some years ago, while holding my weekly advice surgeries, a young man threatened to stab me. Fortunately, he headed off as soon as I took his photograph and then went down to the local police station with the photo to report the incident. To ask the Police to record it and to at least give the individual a warning and let him know they were on the case. What happened then was truly disturbing, as I was told by the officer that they would do nothing about a verbal threat. I would effectively have to wait until I was stabbed before any action would be taken. Since then, matters have deteriorated on many levels, with social media creating a toxic environment for many, not just MPs, but many women and others who receive anonymous threats, or worse.

    



Rockeries, Window Boxes and Hanging Baskets our speciality.

Two things should happen immediately to make society safer for everyone. The first is an end to anonymity on social media, which has allowed the growth of abuse and threats by a relatively small minority of individuals. As social media companies like Facebook and Twitter continue to post such threats and hide the identity of those making the threats, new legislation should force them to end this behaviour, by ensuring the forthcoming Online Harms Bill going through Parliament is tough enough to make this happen. The second thing that must change now is that the Police must take seriously threats of violence, whether it is in domestic abuse situations, or to elected officials, or anyone else. Not all threats will end up as acts of violence, but many acts of violence start off as threats. And even threats can leave the victim feel emotionally damaged. We all deserve to live in a safer society. Let us hope the necessary changes are made quickly to ensure this happens. 22

Place in a pan and add the parsley. 5. Preheat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas mark 6. 6. Remove the beef from the marinade. Heat the oil in a heavy based frying pan and sear the beef on all sides. Place in an ovenproof roasting tin and roast for 20 minutes until cooked through. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before carving. 7. Heat the sauce and spoon over the beef to serve. Accompany with spinach and basil leaves. 36

Take a step back in time with this month’s books Orphan Train – Christina Baker Kline Foster child Molly steals a book from the local library. As retribution, she’s told to help an elderly lady clean out her loft. While they sort through her childhood belongings, Vivian reveals the stories behind them. As one of 250,000 destitute children sent from New York to rural states, Vivian was at the mercy of strangers, some of whom would see her as little more than free labour. A hauntingly evocative novel about a little-known practice, Orphan Train is the perfect book to curl up with on a cold winter’s night.

Look to the future…

Hidden Child – Louise Fein Eleanor seems to have it all, including a devoted, successful husband – Edward – and a delightful four-year-old daughter – Mabel. But when Mabel starts having seizures, life takes a drastic turn. For Edward is a passionate advocate of the eugenics movement and is pushing for the forced sterilisation of those the movement sees as defective – people like Mabel. How far will the family go to keep their secrets hidden? And the Mountains Echoed – Khalid Hosseini This multi-layered story starts in 1950s Afghanistan when a beloved sister, Pari, is sold into a ‘better life’. Over the years, numerous characters reveal their tales, from the girl’s brother, Abdullah, and their stepmother to a seemingly unconnected expat. While Pari forgets her past, she cannot escape the feeling that something is missing. And The Mountains Echoed reads like a series of connected short stories, all of which are beautifully written, tender and rich in detail. All The Light We Cannot See – Anthony Doerr Marie-Laure huddles in a Saint-Malo house as WWII bombs rain down around her. Blind, alone, with just a small stone to protect her. A few streets away, a German boy – Werner – works alongside his comrades as they make a last stand against the Americans. The lyrical writing of All The Light We Cannot See makes you want to savour every page. The characters make you want to race from one page to the next. Stunning. Pony – R. J. Palacio The author of Wonder is back. This time, the book is set in 1860s America. When Silas’s father is abducted by outlaws, Silas sets out to find him. He’s accompanied by a pony belonging to one of the outlaws and his friend Mittenwool, who’s a ghost. Twists and turns abound. Part adventure, part Wild West coming of age, Pony has been marketed as a children’s book, but will no doubt be enjoyed by a wide range of readers. A Net for Small Fishes – Lucy Jago Set in the early 1600s, A Net for Small Fishes is based on the true story of Frances Howard and Anne Turner. Here, Frances has wealth and beauty, but is married to an abusive husband and is deeply unhappy. Anne has talent and charm, but little power. The pair form an unlikely friendship. But their attempt to break away from conventions and seek some small happiness could lead to their downfall. 38

It’s responsible for 60% of strokes and half of all heart attacks, yet because it typically has no symptoms, most people with high blood pressure have no idea they are at risk – hence why it is sometimes referred to as a silent killer. The British Heart Foundation estimates that up to 4.8 million people live with undiagnosed high blood pressure in the UK, and the only way to find out whether it affects you is by having a blood pressure check. The good news, however, is that every NHS pharmacy in England will offer free blood pressure checks to people aged 40 and over as part of a new deal between pharmacies and the NHS. This will undoubtedly help to increase detection of undiagnosed hypertension. Hypertension or high blood pressure is a level that’s consistently at or above 140/90 and it affects one in three adults in the UK. Usually the cause is not clear but there are factors that can increase your risk of getting it, including: • Being overweight

• Being a poor sleeper

• Eating too much salt and not eating enough fruit and vegetables

• Being aged 65 and over

• Not doing enough exercise • Drinking too much alcohol or coffee 42

• Smoking

• Family history of high blood pressure or heart disease • Ethnicity – being of black African or black Caribbean descent • Living in a deprived area

Speaking about the new high street pharmacy blood pressure check scheme, the charity’s director of policy and influencing, John Maringay, added: “This breakthrough programme will also help with the devastating burden of backlog of care left by the Covid-19 pandemic, which could see the number of people waiting for heart care and diagnosis peak at around 550,385 in January 2024, according to our latest report. “Having your blood pressure checked by your local pharmacist is a simple and quick test that will only take about five minutes to complete. Knowing your blood pressure levels will also mean you can discuss the risks with a healthcare professional, who will signpost you to the most effective source of treatment and onward management of your condition. Prevention is always better than cure, so it’s important that you know your numbers and check your blood pressure.” It’s also possible to diagnose hypotension or low blood pressure with a blood pressure check. A low blood pressure reading is one that’s less than 90/60. Symptoms that might indicate your blood pressure is too low include lightheadedness, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, generally feeling weak, confusion and fainting. Our blood pressure can vary depending on what time it is, as it gradually increases throughout the day. What we’re doing and how we’re feeling can also affect it. There’s a number of possible causes of low blood pressure. For example, it can be low because you’re fit and healthy or be inherited hypotension from your parents. Some people naturally develop low blood pressure as they age. In addition, being pregnant, having certain medical conditions such as diabetes and some medications can cause low blood pressure too.

Having said that, we have been extremely busy lately, and still are as I write this, but if you have accepted an estimate, please don’t worry, we will get to you as soon as we possibly can. All the trades seem to be busy just now, materials have been difficult to source sometimes, it’s better now than it was but prices have gone up as well. It seems there have been a few factors responsible for this, out with our control. Ryan one of our tradesmen, and who some of you know, accidently cut off part of his thumb, he’s a brave guy though, and is now back working again. The quick thinking by the guy’s, and our NHS all deserve a mention without a doubt. Anyway folks, if your roof needs any type of attention, or the gutters, in fact any part of the building, give us a call on 0131-334-4977 and Gary will come out and give you a FREE estimate for whatever your requirements are. Please don’t leave it until a small problem turns into a potential large one. We would much rather you join our Roof Maintenance Plan so we can keep your building in tip top form. In fact we will be doing a wee competition in the next edition. You could win a FREE maintenance Check, so look out for the competition won’t you. Seize the opportunity for planting As winter begins to wrap its chilly fingers around the garden, it’s hardly surprising that many people turn inwards and gardening activities gradually slow down or even cease. But there’s plenty of opportunity to create a visual feast that will carry you through the colder months of the year. The garden can be enjoyed from both indoors and out, and November is the perfect planting time while there is still warmth in the soil. What’s more, bare-rooted plants are often available at this time of year, making them much easier to transport – and less expensive too. Consider planting shrubs that will give you colourful berries, trees for fiery autumn foliage, those that provide winter stem colour and structural plants that will make your garden look appealing throughout every season. Aim to have a few plants that give you something beautiful every month, so that your garden is set alight during dull days. Be sure to invite birds into your garden too. They will love most autumn and winter berries and will also appreciate supplementary food from bird feeders. In return they’ll provide a continually changing picture to brighten up the season.

Five shrubs to provide fireworks for the season Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldii ‘Profusion’ looks fairly inconspicuous for most of the year, but then comes its awe-inspiring beadlike berries that are violet-purple in colour. They stay on the shrub after the leaves have dropped, when the display of pom-pom berries is as vibrant as any firework in the sky. It’s easy to see why this plant is known as the beautyberry.

Contact Sarah Hollis or Suzanne Graham to arrange a free initial meeting and obtain a competitive fixed price quote.

The spindle tree, Euonymus europaeus, is a great little shrub at any time of year. But autumn is when it excels. Choose the variety E. ‘Red Cascade’ for maximum impact. The autumn leaf colour is wonderful, then the generous display of fruits needs to be seen in order to be believed. Each one is a vibrant red but when it splits open it reveals delightfully clashing colours from bright orange seeds.

3 Melville Crescent, EH3 7HW 0131 225 2821 emailus@hollisaccounting.co.uk

Viburnum opulus, the guelder rose, is a shrub that provides interest during three seasons. There are clusters of creamy white flowers in spring, then it is smothered in hanging bunches of luscious red berries in autumn that are loved by birds. The rich red autumn foliage colour is also a sight to behold. We are spoilt for choice when it comes to autumn leaf colour. Acers are well known for their incredible display of red, yellow and orange leaves. But it’s Amelanchier that wins the autumn show. Also known as snowy mespilus, this small tree sets the borders alight with scarlet, orange and crimson leaves. Shrubs really do steal the show at this time of year, but not only because of their leaves and berries. Cornus, or dogwood, has vibrant stem colour once the leaves have dropped. There are varieties with lime-green stems, some with flaming orange and red stems and others with dark purple tones. Plant en masse for maximum effect and cut the stems down each year in late winter, so that next year’s show is equally as vibrant. By Caroline Knight: Gardendesignideas.co.uk

Apples It’s no surprise apples are one of the world’s most popular fruits. They’re healthy, widely available and delicious both baked and raw. Cox, Red Pippin, Golden Delicious and Empire are all common in-season varieties to look out for in November. These are all eating apples of course, and cooking needs a firmer, more sour fruit such as Granny Smiths. Brussel Sprouts Another Christmas staple, sprouts have a reputation of being strong and bitter tasting. However, over the years, British farmers have modified their crops to ensure most varieties they grow are sweeter and milder and many people love them. For a different take on serving them, peel the leaves off them (it’ll take a while) and briefly deep-fry them, then serve with lemon and salt. Delicious!

Swede The perfect vegetable for our climate, preferring cold and moist winters. The harvested vegetable keeps really well in a cool, dark place so makes a useful store cupboard standby. Swede is a delicious side vegetable when cooked until soft and mashed with butter or cheese. For extra taste, try frying a bit of chopped onion until soft, then mixing with the mashed swede. Satsumas and Tangerines Bright citrus fruits bring fresh colour to the table in winter and satsumas and tangerines are at their seasonal peak in November and into December. Chard Also known as Swiss chard, and available in traffic-light options of red, orange or green, chard plants produce a constant supply of fresh leaves that can be cut off as needed. It’s more frost-tolerant than spinach, and the leaves are less tender, but otherwise can be used in similar recipes for extra flavour and nutrition.

Parsnips There’s a reason we associate parsnips with Christmas dinner – it’s prime season for them. Using parsnips instead of potatoes makes mash a little less stodgy and adds a more complex flavour. But more often they’ll be roasted until the flesh starts to caramelise and served with any roast dinner. 54

The food we see in late autumn tends to match the colours of foliage, with oranges, reds and the darkest green very common, and bright spring greens now only on the shelves when imported. Luxe doesn’t have to mean eye-wateringly expensive. Here’s how to find a few beauty bargains this winter… Go for own-brand Supermarkets and fashion brands often have their own beauty ranges. Aldi’s Lacura range (www.aldi.co.uk) has a legion of loyal fans and you can pick up an eye palette for just £5.99. And H&M’s nail polishes are amongst the best I’ve tried, and an absolute bargain at just £3.99. My nails stayed chip-free for weeks. Scour discount sites Check out stores like TK Maxx and B&M. You’ll often find heavily discounted skincare, cosmetics, electricals and toiletries from top brands. A quick search on www.tkmaxx.com uncovered a Calvin Klein perfume at 70% off, a Rodial moisturiser at 76% off and an Eve Lom gift set at 49% off. Try something new We often stick to products we know, but it’s worth trying cheaper brands now and then. Inecto, for example, gets great reviews. All products are vegan, made in the UK and up to 98% natural. Plus, prices start at under £2. Try the Argan range for super-shiny hair. A fullsize bottle of shampoo is just £1.49. Find your nearest stockist at www.inecto.com.

Consider memberships Memberships like those offered by Beauty Pie give you the chance to buy luxury products at a fraction of the price. Beauty Pie’s memberships start from £5 a month. You can then purchase products ranging from moisturisers (priced from £8.48) to fragrance (priced from £18.67). They’re created in some of the world’s top labs but are a heck of a lot cheaper than you could buy them for in store. I took out a £10-a-month plan (three-month minimum) and saved more than £150 in my first month. My favourite product so far is the Plantastic Apricot Butter Cleansing Balm, which leaves skin feeling incredibly soft and hydrated. At the time of publishing, BEAUTYPIE10 will get you an extra £10 off at www.beautypie.com.

Buy in bulk Products usually come down in price as they go up in volume. So, if you’re treating yourself to a favourite product, it usually pays to buy the biggest size you can afford. For example, a 400ml bottle of Faith in Nature’s Grapefruit & Orange Shampoo is £5.79 (£14.48 a litre), but you can get a 5 litre bottle from Amazon for £35 (£7 a litre). Don’t want to use the same product for a whole year? Look out for refill shops where you take your own container to stock up on food and toiletries, or consider sharing products (and costs) with friends and family. Sign up for sales Sign up for Money Saving Expert’s newsletter to find out when your favourite shops’ sales start. It’s also worth checking whether you can get a discount as a reward for signing up to brands’ own newsletters. And check sites like www.vouchercodes.co.uk before you buy anything at full price.
