It’s hard to believe Labor Day has come and gone! Over the long weekend I couldn’t help but reflect on the passing of Senator John McCain. Regardless of your political beliefs, there’s no denying the he was a patriot with incredible vision, clarity and a passion for our Great Nation. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to meet Senator McCain while working in Washington, D.C., and I was truly impressed. Despite being a man who wielded incredible power throughout the corridors of Washington, D.C., what impressed me most was how he treated the people around him. He will be missed. The theme for this month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is clarity. With the kids back in school and the holidays creeping up around the corner, I have felt the need to find clarity in my life. A friend of mine, recording artist Matthew West, has captured my attention in the last several weeks with a song called “The Beautiful Things We Miss” that has these thought-provoking lyrics: We don’t get to rewind There’s no such thing as next time Help me remember, we don’t get this back They were right when they said don’t blink It all goes faster than you think

But I’ve realized each day I’m experiencing beautiful moments that I definitely don’t want to miss. By Harv Powers, Ph.D. What makes you feel alive? It’s an interesting question, isn’t it? The answer has nothing to do with your blood pressure or oxygen levels, rather those things that make you feel vibrant and passionate. Poet David Whyte said, “If something does not bring you alive, it has become too small for you.” Think about a plant outgrowing its pot. Or reading a book 25 times in a row. Or even going to the same restaurant week after week. If your marriage has been a little dull, consider infusing it with passion by trying these tips:
Change it up
Routine creates stability, but it also has an unintentional down side. Habituation (doing the same thing over and over) can lead to anesthesia. Boredom kills any relationship, a little at a time. Make small daily changes that let the fresh air in relationally; get up early and watch the sun rise over coffee; surprise your partner with breakfast in bed; take a drive without having a planned destination, or eat dinner on a card table in the front lawn.
Switch it up
Ever have this conversation on date night: Partner 1: “What do you want to do?” Partner 2 “I don’t know, what do you want to do?” Switch it up by alternating who is in charge of planning the night out. Here are some guidelines:
• Flip a coin to determine who starts first. The winner plans the date for themselves. Pick a new activity or one that you haven’t done in a long time. Let your partner know to wear cut-offs or formal wear. Keep the rest a mystery. • If you are not the planner, try anything once. Have a good attitude and you may have more fun than you think.
Learn it up
Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it brings human beings relationally alive. Learn something new together! Try dance lessons, learning a foreign language, discovering how to fly fish, take an art class together, explore how to lay tile, or attend a photography class. What brings you alive? The answer is you! Have fun exploring new things together!

What is the purpose for your family? Have you ever thought about that question? In the corporate world, much time is spent on developing a mission statement to help an organization stay true to its purpose, so it can thrive for years to come.
What Is a Family Mission Statement?
“A family mission statement is a combined, unified expression from all family members of what your family is all about—what it is you really want to do and be— and the principles you choose to govern your family life.” -Stephen Covey
STEP 1:
Talk About What Your Family Is All About
Gather your family and start talking about what your family’s mission is. This is your chance to communicate with your children about your values and hear what they want their family to be like. The easiest way to get ideas going for your mission statement is to ask questions that will foster a great discussion. Try these: • What kind of family do we want to be? • What kinds of things do we want to do?
• What kind of feeling do we want to have in our home? • What kind of home would you like to invite your friends to? • What makes you want to come home? • What do we want to be remembered by? • What kind of relationships do we want to have with one another? • What things are truly important to us as a family? • How can we contribute to society as a family and become more service-oriented?
STEP 2:
Make a List of Your Family’s Core Values
Jim Collins says, “A core value is something so central you would say, ‘Even if it’s harmful to us, we would still hold on to this value. Even if we had to pay penalties, even if we had to punish our children for violating it, even if we had to deny them something that would bring them pleasure, we would still hold to it.’”

Think of Phrases that Capture What Your Family Is All About
In addition to coming up with a list of values and principles that guide your family, brainstorm a list of phrases that really capture the goals and mission of your family. One family chose, “May your first word be adventure and your last word love,” as one of their catchphrases.
STEP 4:
Write Your Family Mission Statement
Once you have your list of big ideas, it’s time to synthesize them into a single mission statement. Don’t expect to crank it out in a single sitting. Remember, mission statements work best if they’re kept short.
Here are some examples:
Our family mission: To love each other… To help each other… To believe in each other… To wisely use our time, talents, and resources to bless others… To worship together… Forever.

DID YOU KNOW? You celebrate their wins, you mourn their losses, but how much do you actually know about Arizona’s NFL team? While they currently call Glendale home, the team has gone through a lot of changes over the years. Nail down these facts—and root hard each season—and you can call yourself a true fan. 1. CARDINAL MIGRATION The team started in Chicago before moving to St. Louis in 1960. The team stayed there for 28 years before relocating to Arizona in a handshake deal. Since 1988, the team has resided in the Grand Canyon State. 2. FIFTY SHADES OF MAROON The Cardinals get their namesake and team color from original owner Chris O’Brien, who bought used jerseys from the University of Chicago for the boys. He described their faded red color as “Cardinal Red.” 3. OLD AS DIRT Originally called the Morgan Athletic Club, the Arizona Cardinals were founded in 1898, making them the oldest continuously running professional football team in the United States. 4. NUMBER FORTY The team retired player No. 40 in memory of Pat Tillman, who played for the team from 1998 to 2002. A largely respected hero in the community, Tillman enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served in Afghanistan and was killed in combat. 5. RUNS IN THE FAMILY When it comes to the football franchise-owning gene, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree! The Cardinals are currently owned by Bill Bidwill, whose family has owned the team since 1932. 6. A MANSION FIT FOR KINGS The team’s University of Phoenix Stadium cost $455 million to build and can expand to seat 72,400 fans. 7. MEN OF MANY TITLES The Cardinals have a number of nicknames including Bird Gang, Cardiac Cards, Red Sea and quite simply, the Cards.

Journaling is a powerful tool you may have heard about, but never have tried. The power in journaling rests in the fact it’s not only where you record your insights and inspiration—but it’s where those insights become solidified and real. Journaling is a place where you can start thinking deeply about your insights and ideas, and where you strategize and plan the execution of those insights and ideas.
If you’re unsure as to where to start journaling, consider:
Before you start writing in your journal, you’ll want to get your mind in the right place. That’s why taking 30 minutes to get out of your regular environment and preparing yourself mentally is important. While preparing yourself, you may read or listen to some inspiring content. You may do a workout. When journaling, you’ll want to write from a position of confidence, resolve, hope and expectation. This mental context will determine the quality and depth of the ideas and emotions you experience while you write.
Being radically honest about what’s going on in your world.
Without this mental preparation, your journaling may not produce the results you hope to achieve. Consider this quote from Charles Haanel, “No matter what the difficulty is, no matter where it is, no matter who is affected, you have no patient but yourself; you have nothing to do but convince yourself of the truth which you desire to see manifest.”
These could be framed as your life vision, your three to fiveyear goals, or goals for the next three to 12 months. A key component of writing big-picture is that it reconnects you with your “why.” It’s very easy to lose sight of your why with the busyness of life.

Take time to reflect on and write about the details of your life and relationships. Write about the people who matter. Write about how far you’ve come. Write specifics about what is happening, and what has happened. Recording your history is a crucial component of journal writing.
After you’ve just expressed gratitude and appreciation for the brilliance (and struggles) in your life—be honest about where you’re not showing up. Commit to making specific changes. Write down the key changes you need to make to achieve your dreams and ideals. While writing about the things you need to change, openly write about the frustrations and difficulties that have led you to where you are. Be honest and vulnerable with yourself. The purpose of this writing is for you to get clarity, and to re-establish your priorities and focus.
