But here in Arizona, we know our summer will continue for another month or two. Perhaps my favorite thing about September is that life is back on a schedule, and it’s a great time to get organized and spend time as a family working on getting healthy prior to the holiday season. REDUCE THE STRESS Give your mind a chance to wander
A recent study found that even though we may have more money and our income levels are higher, the unintended consequence for this success is an unhealthy decrease in our free time. And that’s bad for happiness. The study found that when you are constantly pressed for time, the negative stress can increase anxiety and lead to unhealthy habits in eating, sleeping and exercising. But, if you take your earnings and trade them for time, such as paying someone to mow the lawn or clean your house, you can free up time to spend with the people you enjoy doing activities that bring you pleasure.
Scarcity of Time “We spend our time in ways that don’t pay out in terms of our overall well-being,” says sociologist Christine Carter, Ph.D. “Neurologically, the busier that we feel and the more overwhelmed that we feel, the worse we are at managing our time, planning out how we’ll spend our time and perceiving time.” She says that any time we feel like we don’t have enough of something, it creates a “scarcity mindset” in our brain that triggers our fight-or-flight response. “It worsens our relationship with time and productivity.”
Daydream According to the study, if we spend money on timesaving activities instead of material goods, we may feel more relief at the end of the day and have a more positive mindset. But, if we overdo it, we can stoke feelings of having less control over our lives or we can fill that time with more of what got us in trouble in the first place, such as checking email, scrolling through our phones or just doing more work. “A lot of the things that we pay people to do for us take away our unspoken mind-wandering time. That’s when a lot of thought happens in the brain,” says Carter. She adds that trading money for time is good if we use our free time the right way, like spending it to find fulfillment and connect with people we are close to, which is essential for our well-being. She says if we don’t use our extra time to let the mind wander, the brain will find inopportune times to daydream anyway and interrupt your creativity and productivity.

An important part of how young kids’ minds develop is through free, self-directed play. According to David Elkind, Ph.D., author of The Power of Play: How Spontaneous, Imaginative Activities Lead to Happier, Healthier Children, free play is critical now more than ever, as recesses are shortened or eliminated, and kids’ calendars are busier than ever. “Through play,” Elkind writes, “children create new learning experiences, and those self-created experiences enable them to acquire social, emotional, and intellectual skills they could not acquire any other way.”
Studies show that kids who read aloud to do better in school and have better vocabularies.
2. Talk with parents
Another type of play, sensory play, is also critical for kids’ development. When kids knead clay or finger paint, they are stimulating their senses. “Sensory experiences,” explains one early childhood educator, “provide open-ended opportunities where the process is more important than the product; how children use materials is much more important than what they make with them.”
I’ve heard from countless friends about their daily battles with their elementaryaged kids struggling to do homework, and the way it’s negatively affected their relationships. Instead, of parents nagging their overtired kids to do homework they’re too young to do independently, families should spend much time talking together about their day. In fact, conversation is the best way for all of us – especially young children – to learn about our world and cultivate empathy.
3. Sleep
The National Sleep Foundation estimates that between 25 and 30 percent of children aren’t getting enough sleep. Lack of sleep can cause all sorts of problems in kids, including poor attention, behavior problems, academic difficulties, irritability, and weight gain. But even small amounts of additional sleep can have big impacts. One study found that only 20 additional minutes of sleep can improve kids’ grades.

“Risky” play—activities like climbing a tree—is good for kids. Children need to explore their own limits, to be able to assess risks, and to learn how to negotiate their environments. Researchers theorize that risky play, found across all cultures and in other mammals, has a evolutionary role in preparing offspring for life without their caretakers.

Kids who learn about new foods, and how to prepare them, may be more likely to choose more nutritious foods later on.

With the chaos of getting back into the swing of school and juggling your new schedule, make sure you carve out time to live life well. So often we slide through life without a plan, then wonder why we didn’t achieve our desires. Make a plan to stop sliding and start thriving! Make sure they’re measurable and that you check-in periodically to make sure you’re progress is on track. Goals create direction, motivation and purpose. 7 Be thankful. Be humble. 8 Discover your passion. Do what you love as often as possible. 9 Surround yourself with awesome people. People you love make you feel good, and support your dreams. 10 Express your love to the important people in your life as often as possible. Not only will this make them feel good, but it makes you feel great! 11 Play. Spend time laughing and doing silly things with your spouse, children or friends. 12 Express yourself. There’s only one you. Own it, love it and let yourself shine! 13 Help others. 14

“The best way to reduce stress is advance planning,” says Alice Domar, PhD. Experts recommend scheduling the following medical appointments for optimal preventive care. In your 20s and older: 1. Primary care physician, trained in either family or internal medicine: Once a year (at minimum every other year). Checkup should include reading and fecal occult blood test to screen for problems including gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and colon cancer. You should also get a fasting blood sugar test every two years or so to screen for diabetes. 2. Gynecologist: Once a year. Includes Pap smear, pelvic exam, clinical breast exam, and, if you have a new sex partner, screenings for sexually transmitted diseases. If you have more than one sexual partner, you should have a Pap smear and STD tests every six months.
In your 40s, ADD: 6. Mammogram: Use your intuition and common sense based on your health and family history, and discuss your decision with your doctor. 7. Stress echocardiogram: Get a baseline analysis of how your heart is holding up.
In your 50s and above, ADD: 9. Colonoscopy: Every five years. 10. Bone density scan: Start routine testing at menopause— earlier if you’re small-framed, your weight is very low, or you have a mother with osteoporosis.
8. Ophthalmologist: Many doctors recommend visits every two to four years until age 65, then annually. The visit should include an intraocular pressure measurement for glaucoma.
3. Dentist: Every six months for teeth cleaning and oral exam. 4. Dermatologist: If you’re fairskinned or have a family history of skin cancer, you’ll want an annual appointment. Otherwise, go if you have any suspicious moles or skin problems.

Be real with what you feel New research suggests that a key to happiness may include embracing more negative emotions. Traditionally, psychologists have held that in order to increase happiness, it is important to increase positive emotions and decrease the negative. In the new study “The Secret to Happiness: Feeling Good or Feeling Right?,” researchers suggest that people are happier when the emotions they experience align with the emotions they desire, even if those are unpleasant, such as anger or contempt. “People are happier if they feel what they want to feel or if they want what they feel,” says Maya Tamir, Ph.D., lead researcher on the study and psychology professor at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. “If people want to feel unpleasant emotions, they are happier if they feel them, at least to some extent. If we feel angry, but consider these the right feelings to have—we’re probably better off than if our feelings don’t match what we want them to be.”
Embrace your emotions Maya explains that some negative emotions can be helpful and even beneficial when those emotions are aligned with our desires. For instance, if you are feeling angry about a great injustice, your desires are probably related to your core values. The anger you feel may spur you into action, which can provide meaning in your life as you work to correct the injustice. Embracing your anger may motivate you to pursue a fitness goal if you are out of shape or strive for a promotion at work if you are not happy with your current financial situation. “Happiness is not only about the emotions you have, but also about the emotions you want to have,” Maya explains. “You are happier when these two match than when they mismatch, regardless of whether that means feeling more or less pleasant overall.” The bottom line is that sweeping your negative emotions under the rug will not help you achieve happiness, so just don’t do it.
