It’s hard to believe my kids are back in school! We have enjoyed a great summer together, but I must admit it went by faster than I wanted it to. My oldest son, Logan, is a senior and I’m having a hard time grasping that it’s his last year of high school. To top things off, my youngest is starting high school. As you can imagine, over the last several weeks, my mind has been racing with thoughts about if they’re prepared to launch into the next stage of life. The theme of this month’s issue of the The Grand Season Family is LAUNCH. This theme has been very evident in my personal life lately. This summer our conversations have centered on setting and achieving goals. A quote from Oprah hit me hard, and now is written on our chalkboard in the hall. “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.” I don’t know about you, but this quote resonates with me. I want my sons to live a life of adventure. I want them to understand that it is through hard work, determination and drive that dreams become reality. As teenagers sometimes do, my kids asked me what I was
doing to live my own adventure. Of course, my response had something to do with launching them is enough of an adventure at this point in my life. With that question in mind, I want to ask you, “What are you doing to launch your dreams and live your adventure?” Hopefully, some of the articles in this month’s The Grand Season Family will help you as you launch your family into the next season of life, but will also encourage you to think about what you need to do to live the life you dream about. START YOUR ENGINES Transition tips from summer to school
It may be hard to believe, but it’s time for school. For most families, this news means it’s time to adjust from late nights and lazy mornings to starting a daily routine so everyone can get to school on time. Try some of these tips to get you and your kids prepared for school.
1. Take some time to read with your kids. 2. Enjoy school shopping with your child and involve them by giving them choices. 3. Prepare yourself for early mornings and prepare what you can the night before. Being ready for a school morning is the best thing that you can do to get your family off to a great start! 4. Celebrate back to school with a party! 5. If you are homeschooling, build up your supplies as you start the new year. Stock up on pencils, markers, crayons, highlighters and more! 6. Take time to prepare your anxious children for school. Take a tour of the school, meet the teacher and practice pick up and drop off to get started in your preparation. 7. Create a homework station for your children. 8. Use hooks for each child’s book bag to keep things organized. 9. Mix up the lunches this year and keep it simple. (See page 30 for ideas) 10. Organize your child’s clothes for the entire week. Pick every outfit out on Sunday afternoon and lay them out or hang them up for the week. 11. Start your child’s day out right with a great meal! 12. Plan out some easy, healthy after school snacks to fill your kids just enough until dinnertime. 13. Back to school means sicknesses are on their way. Find ways to cut down on sickness! Make sure your kids are getting 8 hours of sleep a night. 14. The morning of the first day, have a special gift for your child. It doesn’t have to be fancy. 15. Try lunch box notes to brighten your child’s day. 16. Be sure to use your last week before the kids go to school to spend some muchneeded one on one time with the kids.

Kiss instead of peck
You and your husband are probably in the habit of pecking goodbye each morning before work and pecking once again when you see each other in the evening. Tonight, when your husband comes home, surprise him with a long, passionate kiss.
Give your spouse your “best”
Let’s face it, by the end of the day you’re exhausted! You’ve given your all to your kids, your job, your chores and dinner, but what about your spouse? Consciously make an effort to give your “best” to each other every day.

Love is a choice, a decision and a commitment. Plum-Cherry Ice Pops
Muddled Lemonberryade
Ingredients 3 plucots or plums (about 9 ounces), pitted and cut into quarters 8 ounces fresh or frozen pitted sweet cherries (about 40 cherries) 3 ounces red seedless grapes (about 16 grapes) 1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar 1/8 teaspoon almond extract Champagne, for serving adults
Ingredients 4 lemons, slice 1/2 cup mint leaves 1 cup sugar 1 pint berries (strawberries and blackberries preferable) 1 quart water 1 quart club soda
Directions Combine the plums, cherries, grapes, sugar and extract in a blender and puree until smooth. Pour the mixture into six to eight 4-ounce ice-pop molds and freeze overnight until solid. For adults: Invert each ice pop into a cup and add some champagne. As the ice pops melt, they create grown-up slushies.

Cucumber Jalapeno Margarita
Directions Slice lemons and place in the bottom of the drink pitcher. Add 1/2 cup fresh mint and 1 cup sugar on top of lemons. With the wooden spoon mash the mixture for 1 minute. Add the berries and lightly mash. Add 1 quart water and refrigerate until chilled. To serve: Fill a tall glass with ice and fill 3/4 with lemon juice mixture, top with club soda and serve.
Ingredients 1/2 cup fresh lime juice 1/2 cup white tequila 1/4 cup orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier 1/4 cup simple syrup, or more as needed 4 thin slices cucumber 1 jalapeno, halved lengthwise Ice, for serving Salt for glass rims, optional Directions Mix together the lime juice, tequila, orange liqueur, simple syrup, cucumber and jalapenos in a large pitcher. Chill for at least 1 hour (the longer the margarita sits, the more the cucumber and jalapeno flavors infuse into the drink). Serve over ice in salt-rimmed glasses, if desired.
