Tips for keeping more in control
Life is very much a balancing act. We are constantly trying to move forward with purpose and, achieve our goals—all while also trying to maintain a sense of balance with all of the different aspects of our lives. When one area demands an excessive amount of our time, we can easily find ourselves thrown off. Returning things back into alignment typically requires a concerted effort. Here are some tips that can help. 1. Assess your life as it is now Looking at yourself as you really are is the first step in restructuring your life. Do you feel physically exhausted, mentally stagnant or find yourself without close relationships? Would you call yourself a workaholic? If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, your life is probably out of balance. 2. Make a conscious decision to become balanced Choosing reality as your basis of decision is the second step to becoming balanced. Achieving balance will allow you to reach your goals and your purpose in life, while creating less stress along the way. 3. Set goals in every area of your life Set realistic goals in all areas of your life to assist yourself in remembering that your ultimate goal is balance. Your goals should cover: • Your relationships • Your physical being • Your spiritual alignment • Your mental development • Your job • Your finances 4. Be willing to take the risk Being willing to assess yourself and risk change will not only enhance your life, but make you feel more energy and have an expanded awareness of what life is all about. Acknowledging that balance is essential and recreating your life to encompass your decision is worth all the risk. 5. Make time to reassess yourself on a daily basis Don’t feel that your decisions are made in concrete; if something feels like it isn’t working, be willing to look at a new decision. Alcohol wakes you up at night While a drink or two at night can make you feel drowsy and prompt faster onset of sleep, going to bed with a buzz may lead to a worse night’s sleep overall. In one study, scientists concluded that, while sleep may come more easily after consuming alcohol, you’ll eventually wake up more easily and more often throughout the night or in the early hours of the morning. It can disrupt your REM sleep REM sleep, the deepest sleep stage, is essential to a good night’s rest. The problem with alcohol is that it has a significant impact on REM sleep, which can hurt long-term memory and make us more irritable. Moderation is the key to balancing a fun night out and a restful snooze. It might cause heartburn Alcohol has been known to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle between your stomach and esophagus that’s supposed to be closed except for when you’re swallowing food. When you throw too many drinks into the mix, however, the muscle can relax and stay open for too long, causing stomach acid to come back up, which results in a burning sensation. It sends you to the bathroom The fact is that consuming alcohol, a diuretic, can make you go more. Our bodies generally produce less urine at night than throughout the day, allowing us to sleep about six to eight hours without interruption. Drinking alcohol before bed, however, can cause us to wake up in the middle of the night with the urge to go, disrupting the sleep cycle.

Planning is a way to ensure that you can take care of business and take care of yourself. You aren’t taking care of yourself With everything you might be juggling (work, relationships, home life, etc.), the most important thing is to make time for yourself. Ideas to get your body moving
If you’ve pretty much been planted on the couch this summer, here’s how to start exercising and establish a fitness routine you’ll actually stick with. Take some selfies To accurately track your progress, it’s helpful to identify a starting point and then define your goal. Throw on a sports bra and shorts or a bathing suit and take a video with your smart phone to capture your body from all angles. Do this every two to four weeks to track progress. Start small So, you haven’t lifted a weight since Cactus League started, give yourself a break. The first week you’re easing back into exercising, start small. Know that any movement is good movement. Commit to doing 10 minutes of an exercise video or walking for exercise three days this week.
Journal Write down five ways you are going to be healthy today. Your daily success list could include things like not drinking soda, eating more vegetables, doing 30 minutes of walking today, taking the stairs in your office once a day, and drinking more water. Keep your goals small and achievable to celebrate daily victories. Overcome your fear of the gym The gym can be an intimidating place for many of us. If you’re overweight, obese or just plain inexperienced, you might be afraid that people are staring or judging you. The reality is, most of the time, everyone at the gym is focusing on themselves. Expect to fail You’re going to make mistakes and stumble along the way. There will be times when life will get crazy and you’ll temporarily be derailed. The difference between failing on a diet or fitness routine and succeeding is that you pick yourself up from the fall and keep going. When seniors struggle with basic tasks such as selfcare, transportation or household chores, they don’t always talk about it. They may be embarrassed or afraid of losing their independence. Here are some warning signs that a loved one may be in need of care: • A change in mood, such as depression, anxiety or a loss of interest in socializing and hobbies.

• Significant weight loss, which can happen for a variety of reasons, including serious physical and mental disorders.
• A prescription stockpile could indicate your parent is forgetting to take critical pills.

The reality is plenty of good can come from spending money in positive ways. Most of us aren’t aware of the negative subconscious beliefs that we’ve held about money. Many negative beliefs about money have been encoded in our brains and passed down from generation to generation. Check out these beliefs and examine which ones you may hold. Negatives beliefs: Money is bad. A lot of people have a negative view of money. At the very least, they feel they have to be cautious when they deal with money. Money disappears fast. When you need money most, you cannot find it. It quickly disappears. Right after it comes into your life, it will go fast! Money hurts people. Money, in the literal sense, cannot hurt people. However, we may feel hurt because money triggers some pain in us. Positive beliefs: Money supports people. Money can support people by enabling them to make a living, helping them learn new things, and providing them with security and all the necessities required to live. Money makes people happy. Money does elicit positive emotions. You can in fact feel happy about money even if you have only a little of it. Money helps realize dreams. People have all kinds of dreams, and sometimes money helps to fund them.

Q: Recently, I was walking to the drugstore when I heard a small dog frantically barking from a nearby car. I looked in the window and saw a toy poodle in the back seat, putting her paws on the windows and barking at everyone passing by. The car was not running though it was parked in a shady spot. I rushed inside and called for the manager, who contacted the police. They immediately opened the car and rescued the little dog, who was panting heavily. How do you feel about taking pets on errands? A: Even on a pleasant day with temperatures in the mid70s, the interior of a car can heat up to life-threatening levels of more than 100°F. That’s even on a cloudy day, or when parked in a shady spot. If you want to take your pet with you, go places that welcome pets. Otherwise, leave them at home. It’s not worth the risk.
