Back in 2001, we started as a small seasonal mailer reaching about 15,000 homes in the Sun City Grand. Today, The Grand Season is mailed monthly to more than 105,000 homes across the West Valley. We’ve all made mistakes throughout our lives that haven’t exactly put us in the best light. Chances are however, you probably felt a little guilt and grew because of the situation. If you want to continue to grow as a person, here are some ways to become the best version of yourself.

1. Compliment yourself.

Every morning before you go on with your daily routine, take a couple of minutes to give yourself a compliment. Whether you compliment your outfit, or how you recently completed a task using your unique skill sets, giving yourself a little emotional boost will make you happy.

2. Don’t make excuses

Blaming your spouse, boss, or clients is fruitless and won’t get you very far. Instead of pointing fingers and making excuses about why you aren’t happy or successful in your personal or professional life, own your mistakes and learn from them.

3. Let go of anger

Letting go of anger is easier said than done. While anger is a perfectly normal emotion, you can’t let it fester. When this happens, you may make unwise decisions, and more important, it may affect your health.

4. Be honest and direct

If you want to be a better person in either your personal or professional life, you should always tell the truth and state as clearly as possible what you are trying to convey. Learn to articulate your thoughts, feelings, and ideas in an open and honest manner.

5. Be yourself

Stop trying to be like everyone else. Focus your attention on aligning yourself with your values and beliefs, establish your identity, build courage, create boundaries, and find focus and direction.

6. Be respectful

Be respectful of others’ time, thoughts, ideas, lifestyles, feelings, work, and everything else. You don’t have to agree with any of it, but people have a right to their opinions. Becoming a better person doesn’t happen overnight, but it is possible.

CAN’T SHAKE IT?

The average American, after all, gets two to three colds a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Most colds last only three to five days, but you can still be congested or have a cough for up to two weeks. The trouble is, colds can linger longer or get worse as a result of lifestyle habits and behaviors, including those you might otherwise have thought were healthy. Have you made any of these mistakes?

Mistake #1: Not backing off your intensity at the gym.

Exercise can be a mental godsend when you’re sick, lifting your spirits at the very least. But don’t take this as permission to give it your all when you’re sick, or you could make yourself worse. If you have a fever, cough, chest congestion or upset stomach, hold off on all exercise until those symptoms resolve.

Mistake #2: Telling yourself you’re not sick. If you’ve always subscribed to the mind-overmatter philosophy when it comes to recovering from colds, give it up. Pretending you’re not sick might not encourage you to dial back your activities, which means you could overexert yourself, thus making symptoms worse and delaying recovery.

Mistake #3: Skimping on sleep.

Sleep might sink to the bottom of your regular to-do list—the CDC reports that one in three Americans don’t get the sleep they need—but when you’re sick, sleep becomes even more critical. Inadequate sleep can reduce the function of the immune system and prolong recovery from colds. The problem is, cold symptoms like coughing and congestion can keep you awake when you’re trying to sleep. If that’s the case, try using over-the-counter medications to sleep better.

Mistake #4: Overusing decongestants.

Decongestants can certainly make you feel better, and even sleep better, which can shorten the course of your cold. Using a nasal decongestant for longer than one or two days, however, could spell trouble. When used beyond three days, experts say topical decongestant nasal sprays can make your congestion worse.

AVOIDING MEDICARE FRAUD

By Matilda Charles Medicare is a pot of gold for scammers. There is a lot of money to be made by those who successfully commit fraud against seniors. You, however, can stop them in their tracks by not falling for the scams. Here are just a few of the scams: Genetic testing is a hot topic for those who want to be screened for a variety of potential illnesses. If you get a call offering genetic testing (or even at a booth at a senior fair), don’t believe the scammer who says that Medicare will pay for it, and that all you need to do is provide your Medicare number. Never give that number out! The only legitimate way Medicare will pay for genetic testing is if

your doctor thinks it’s medically necessary and orders it. Even your medical provider shouldn’t be completely trusted. When you receive your Medicare Summary Notice showing what was billed and what Medicare paid, look closely at it. Check the dates and services to be sure that you really did receive those services. While errors could be honest mistakes, maybe they’re not. Call your provider and ask them to send you an itemized bill so you can see how they came up with their numbers and to send a corrected

bill to Medicare. If they don’t, or if you suspect fraud, report it. Call Medicare at 800-MEDICARE (800633-4227). To learn more, see the Senior Medicare Patrol (877-8082468) whose job is to ferret out Medicare fraud. Look for them at smpresource.org. Don’t miss the Consequences to Beneficiaries section of the website. The health impacts of fraud are scary: misinformation in our files, incorrect lab results and more.
