This time of year it can be hard to be joyful if something is getting in the way. Conflict. Disappointment. Fear. Anger. These are emotions you have felt at one point or another in your relationships. While learning to forgive may not be easy, it is absolutely necessary. Forgiveness requires an apology Sure, we’d all like a heartfelt apology from the person who hurt us. Your job is to ask for an apology, if you are comfortable doing so. Just understand that your ability to forgive is not dependent on anyone else’s words or actions. Forgiveness is not a one-time event Particularly for deep-rooted injuries, meaningful forgiveness can take years to achieve. But we can always begin the process of forgiveness and deal with the resurgences of anger as they arise. Forgiveness doesn’t mean you have to like the person Forgiveness demonstrates your character; it is not proof of another person’s. You don’t have to trust the person—or even like them—to forgive them. Forgiveness requires confronting the person Often, it is best to directly address the person who hurt you. This allows you to articulate how the person’s words or actions have affected you, which may provide a psychological release. If you do not feel safe approaching the person, however, do not put yourself in a dangerous situation. Learning to forgive may be the single most important thing you can do to grow in your relationships and while it can be hard, it can also lead to more joy. One of my favorite memories of my childhood was waking up on Christmas morning to the sight of my Lionel train running around the Christmas tree. I immediately thought that it was the best Christmas ever! You see, as a boy it was all I ever wanted. The sight of the smoke bellowing out of the engine and the sound of the whistle accompanied by the chugging of the engine mesmerized me. It was then my passion for trains began. As a child, the sights and sounds were enough to hold my interest, but even now as an adult, I love the history trains represent. Participating in the SCW Model Railroad club in Sun City West is a highlight for me, because I have the opportunity to share my childhood passion with other train enthusiasts. Bring your friends and family this holiday season to view the trains at the indoor and outdoor exhibit, featuring the Polar Express and Thomas & Friends, located at RH Johnson Arts & Craft Center. 19803 R.H. Johnson Blvd., Sun City West. The trains are operated by train club members and, as with every railroad, the trains run on regular schedules—check the postings at R.H. Johnson Arts & Craft Center. Perhaps, you too, will be mesmerized by the sights and sounds of the trains as they pass by!
HOLLYWOOD HAPPENINGS Disney has heeded the words of critics and fans who thought “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” was bloated, incoherent, repetitive, draining and a rehash of the first four films. It also was the lowest grossing film in the 14-year, $4.5 billion franchise, with a $795 million gross against a $320 million price tag. Disney’s solution is to bring on board Robert Reese and Paul Wernick, who successfully wrote the two “Deadpool” films that killed it at the box office.
Milo Ventimiglia, rerunning daily in “The Gilmore Girls” and riding high with the hit NBC drama “This Is Us,” will star in the comedy “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” with Kevin Costner, Amanda Seyfried and Gary Cole, due in 2019. Next up for Ventimiglia is the romantic comedy “Second Act,” with Jennifer Lopez, Leah Remini, Vanessa Hudgens and Treat Williams, coming Dec. 21.

Our Autistic daughter Rachel graduated from high school in 2016. At first we didn’t know what was next, but thankfully we learned about One Step Beyond, Inc. here in the Northwest Valley. Now, Rachel goes to her program each weekday. Members at One Step Beyond are able to choose several classes with topics of interest or areas to develop skills. Just a few of the options include culinary, science, band, Special Olympics, trivia, math, and many others that give members fun and educational opportunities, and some even vocational training so they can obtain employment. Several times a month there are after hours events where members can choose to participate in social events such as attend movies or have a bingo night or a themed dance. They also have an annual trip out of town to encourage independence! Hundreds of families like mine are being helped right here in our community by the services that One Step Beyond offers for residents with intellectual disabilities. My family is extremely grateful for the services that they offer and we are very thankful for donations from the community that help support these programs! A look at Jewish customs
HOLIDAYS
The Hanukkah celebration revolves around the kindling of a nine-branched menorah, known in Hebrew as the hanukiah. On each of the holiday’s eight nights, another candle is added to the menorah after sundown; the ninth candle—the shamash (“helper”)—is used to light the others. Jews typically recite blessings during this ritual and display the menorah prominently in a window as a reminder of the miracle that inspired the holiday.
In another allusion to the Hanukkah miracle, traditional Hanukkah foods are fried in oil. Potato pancakes (latkes) and jam-filled donuts (sufganiyot) are particularly popular in many Jewish households. Other Hanukkah customs include playing with foursided spinning tops called dreidels and exchanging gifts.

VETERANS POST In July 1973 a fire broke out in the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. By the time it was put out four days later, as many as 18 million personnel files were lost, accounting for 80 percent of the Army’s records and 75 percent of the Air Force’s holdings. Records that weren’t burned were soaked by millions of gallons of water. Employees were able to save 6 million records in that soggy condition. The biggest problem was how to dry the waterlogged records before mold took hold. McDonnell Douglas stepped up and offered its vacuum-dry process chamber. Thousands of cartons of wet, damaged files were delivered and subjected to freezing and drying in an attempt to save them.

Basement people evaluate others. With their critical judgments of people’s words and actions, they tear away at others’
souls. Balcony people, on the other hand, affirm others. They cheer others on and energize them with their affirmations. Here’s a tough question: Are you a balcony or basement person? Never forget, you have the power to encourage someone to achieve greatness. There are people in your life that need you to believe in them—your children, spouse, employees and even your boss. Below are a few suggestions you can do to help them build self-confidence and summon the courage to overcome challenges: 1. Develop a genuine rapport with them by showing them that you are totally invested in their success. 2. Challenge their abilities while giving them the tools and support they need to succeed. 3. Offer sincere encouragement about their capabilities when you see them struggling or getting down on themselves. Never underestimate the impact of encouraging others. PAWS CORNER Q: My 18-month-old puppy “Sparks” shreds socks. I try to keep them put away but worry that my kids will accidentally leave out a sock and he’ll get it. How can I train Sparks to not eat socks? A: The shredding is not unusual behavior, because puppies love to chew and destroy things, but swallowing the sock is outside the norm. If Sparks only tries to shred the sock when you take it away from him, he’s guarding it in the same way he guards food, as a resource. Start his training by reinforcing basic obedience commands, especially the “leave it” or “drop it” commands. Give him a reward, like attention or a tiny treat, each time he successfully obeys the command. Basically, Sparks needs to drop anything in his mouth when you give the command.

December 11, 1981 Jamaican boxer Trevor Berbick beats former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali in a unanimous 10-round decision in Nassau, the Bahamas. At the age of 39, Ali (born Cassius Clay) was attempting his second comeback from retirement.
WHAT HAPPENED IN HISTORY
Big events that occurred years ago during the month of December
December 4, 1956 The “Million Dollar Quartet” convenes at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, in an historic impromptu jam session. Present were Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley. A tape recorded that day was not discovered until 1981.
December 12, 1963 A vinyl LP record, “John Fitzgerald Kennedy: A Memorial Album,” sets a record for album sales. Some 4 million copies sold in the first six days of its release. The album included recordings of some of the late president’s most memorable speeches. December 13, 1621 The first American fur exports leave for England aboard the Fortune, only to be stolen by the French. The colonists later traded with Native Americans, exchanging corn for beaver skins, which were in turn sold in England.
December 5, 1945 Five U.S. Navy torpedo-bombers take off from Florida on a routine training mission over the Atlantic Ocean. The squadron leader later reported that his compass had failed and his position was unknown, and a rescue aircraft was dispatched with a 13-man crew. No trace of the 27 crewmen or six aircraft was ever found. Decenber 6, 1917 A Belgian steamer and French freighter, both loaded with ammunition, explode in Canada’s Halifax Harbor, leveling part of the town and killing nearly 1,600 people and injuring some 8,000. The ships carried 8 million tons of TNT intended for use in World War I. December 10, 1915 The one-millionth Model T car rolls off the assembly line at Ford’s River Rouge plant in Detroit. Ford would go on to sell more than 15 million Model Ts, and toward the end of their run in 1927, had cut the price to just $300 (the equivalent of about $3,700 today).
December 13, 2000 Vice President Al Gore reluctantly concedes defeat to Texas Gov. George W. Bush in his bid for the presidency, following five weeks of complex legal battles over the recounting of votes in Florida. December 15, 1944 Legendary bandleader Glenn Miller’s aircraft disappears over the English Channel while en route to France. Miller had set aside his music career to serve his country as leader of the USAAF dance band. December 17, 1903 Orville and Wilbur Wright make the first successful flight in history of a self-propelled, heavier-than-air aircraft. It stayed aloft for 12 seconds.
