DOING NOTHING IN RETIREMENT What to do about not doing much by Matilda Charles

A show of hands, please! How many of us are doing nothing we’d planned to do once we quit working? How many of us are, more accurately, doing nothing at all? I thought it was just me, jettisoning carefully laid plans for how I’d spend my time and opting to do...not much. I’m not the only one among my friends. Those who are ahead of me, claim they did the same thing for one year. That length of time seems to be the common theme, spending a year chilling out, avoiding responsibility if it involves making plans and in general hiding from those who want to rope us into doing...anything. The suspected reason: We did too much during our working years. And for at least a little while, we need to take a breather. At the end of the year, I’m told, it’s like coming up for air, looking around at the world and deciding to join it again. Experts say this happens frequently. Once we retire, we don’t know how to make new friends, and so on. I think they’re wrong. It’s not that we don’t know how to do those things, we just don’t want to. When it comes to volunteering, they say that the “menial” type of volunteer work available doesn’t appeal to us. But then neither does the “mentoring” they say should be the answer to it all because it would use our skills. Once I identified this “I’m not going to do anything” mentality in myself, I decided to counter all the TV watching with a personal strategy designed to at least get me out of the house. On a big calendar I’ve made entries for things like visiting the library once a week or checking out a class at the senior college. And when the time comes, I don’t actually have to do those things. April 10, 1866 The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is founded in New York by philanthropist and diplomat Henry Bergh

April 11, 1945 The American Third Army liberates the Buchenwald concentration camp, near Weimar, Germany. While everyone may have a unique perspective on how to forgive, the following strategies have been proven effective for many people. Express yourself When trying to decide how to forgive someone, it may or may not help to express your feelings to the other person. If the relationship is important and you would like to maintain it, it may be very useful for you to tell the other person—in non-threatening language—how their actions affected you. If the person is no longer in your life, or if you have reason to believe that things will get much worse if you address the situation directly, you may want to just write a letter and tear it up (or burn it) and move on. Look for the positive Journaling about a situation where you were hurt or

Cultivate empathy While you don’t have to agree with what the other person did to you, when working on how to forgive, it often helps to put yourself in the other person’s shoes. Research has shown that empathy, particularly with men, is associated with forgiveness, and can make the process easier. Get help Sometimes it can be difficult to forget about the past and forgive, particularly if the offending acts were traumatic. TIP 1 Want a better way to recycle your plastic grocery bags? Simply gather them all when you put away your purchases and store them in the trunk of your car. Then, the next time you grocery shop, put them in the appropriate container at the store—not your curbside recycling bin. TIP 2 When replacing the box of baking soda from your fridge, dump the old one into your kitchen drain and follow with a couple cups of white vinegar. After a few minutes, flush the drain with hot water to leave it smelling fresh. TIP 3 If you accidentally spill water on a book, separate the pages with pieces of wax paper. Then close the book. As it dries, the wax paper wicks away moisture and prevents wrinkles. TIP 4

Five things that will help you sleep

One simply can not overestimate the importance of getting a good night’s sleep. But sometimes that’s easier said than done. If you’re struggling to catch some quality shut eye, here are some ideas that just might transform your life by improving your ability to get quality rest. 1. Right before you go to bed, try taking a hot bath or long shower— the rise and resulting sudden drop in your body temperature will help to make you feel more relaxed—and sleepy. 2. Wear warm socks to bed. When you sleep, your body redirects blood flow to your hands and feet to redistribute heat from your core to your extremities; cold feet can inhibit this blood flow and therefore make it harder for you to maintain a restful sleep. Socks are the fix.

3. If the temperature in your bedroom allows it, try sleeping under a heavy or weighted blanket. Long used by psychiatrists in occupational therapy as a tool for calming patients with sensory overstimulation, the all-over “deep touch pressure” of weighted blankets helps promote deeper relaxation. 4. Still having trouble sleeping? Here’s a breathing trick you can try. Touch your tongue to a spot directly behind your top front teeth, then breathe in through your nose for four seconds. Then hold your breath for seven seconds and exhale through your mouth for eight seconds. Repeat the whole process three times to fully decompress…if you don’t fall asleep before you reach the end. 5. If none of these techniques are helping you sleep (and you’ve tried cutting out before-bed caffeine and sugars), then you need to do a little more to set your mind at ease. Introductory mindfulness techniques, such as focusing in on your breathing or studying an imagined object (with your eyes closed) for five minutes, can allow you to finally slip away from the stresses of daily life and find a more restful sleep.

In honor of Earth Day (April 22, 2019), let us consider how being mindful of the three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) at home can make a difference far beyond it.

What can I reuse? Can you refurbish cabinets instead of getting new ones? Can new paint upgrade a ﬁnish? Can old items be used by someone else? Learning to reuse or repurpose is essential for cutting down waste. Not remodeling? Try these basic ideas: • Send gently used books to schools • Donate your older fashion looks to charities • Paint old furniture and repurpose it • Use old spaghetti sauce jars to serve as pots for plants • Use rechargeable batteries

Reduce Stop the clutter, slow down the buying. Do you need it or just want it? Is there something else that can be used for this purpose? Here are a few things you can do immediately to reduce your consumer footprint. • Print on both sides of the paper • Pay bills electronically • Remove your name from mailing lists • Read newspapers online • Avoid using disposable items like paper plates, cups and utensils • Avoid buying overpackaged items

Sometimes a little creativity in the kitchen can make a massive difference in the work required to make a meal. Here are some unique ways to simplify your tasks in the kitchen. Pit Cherries Place each cherry over the top of a water bottle and push the pits through with a chopstick.

Pit Avocados The big slippery pit will be stuck in one side after halving: to remove, chop the knife into the pit so it sticks, then twist sideways. Peel an Orange Slice the ends off, then slice through the peel down one side; pull apart to release all of the wedges. Peel a Kiwi Slice off the end, run a spoon inside the skin to separate it, then the fruit will squeeze right out.

Core Strawberries Push a straw through the strawberry from the bottom point to core it. Juice Lemons and Limes Press firmly on the fruit whole rolling it on the counter, then slice in half—the juice will squeeze out easily. Peel Garlic Cloves Smash a clove with the side of you knife blade (carefully) to break the skin free.

Peel a Mango Cut four sides off the mango as close to the pit as possible, then push each piece down the side of a glass to separate fruit from the skin. Trim Asparagus Stalks Bend a stalk until it snaps. Cut all stalks there; toss the tough ends.

President Trump has signed an executive order to create a task force to address veteran suicide. The secretaries for a dozen government agencies will be on it. The task force has been given one year to develop strategies to lower the rate of veteran suicides, design and propose to Congress a program of local grants, and develop a research strategy to improve coordination and monitoring. The Department of Veterans Affairs was already serious about preventing veteran suicide. The November 2018 Government Accountability Office report on the VA’s suicide prevention outreach says that the 2018 suicide prevention mediaoutreach budget was $6.2 million. Targets were veterans, their families, their friends and the general public— all groups who need the information. Yet the VA spent only $57,000 of that money and guessed that they would spend a total of $1.5 million, leaving $4.7 million untouched. Why? Because there was a vacancy in the suicide prevention office! A single vacancy. The GAO report says there was no one to “make decisions.”

To prepare your egg shells for this craft, crack the egg across the top instead of across the middle. Once you’ve emptied the contents of the egg, rinse out the shell and put it aside to dry. Step 1: Paint the eggs Use the craft paint to paint the eggs. Use coordinating pastel colors for a nice display.

Step 2: Melt the wax Before melting the wax, be sure to bend the food can so it has a spout. This step is critical for minimizing mess when making these candles. Place the wax you’d like to melt in the can. Stand up the can with the wax in a small pot. Add water to the pot no higher than the level of the wax and bring the water to a simmer. Allow the can to remain in the pot until all the wax is melted. Step 3: Pour the candles Stand the eggs up in an egg carton and place one wick in each egg. Don’t let your mistakes define you

“I can’t believe you did that. You idiot. You can’t be trusted. You’re terrible. And I’ll never forgive you!” These words can be devastating to someone seeking forgiveness. But when you say these words to yourself, it can be crippling. Forgiving yourself can be hard work, but it’s worth it. Here are some helpful tips to consider: Decide to let it go In the process of forgiving, the first barrier you have to remove is within your own mind. You must make the decision: I will not dwell on this incident. That decision doesn’t guarantee you’ll stop the mental video, but it draws a line in the sand and provides a starting point. Look at what you’ve done…objectively A big obstacle to forgiving yourself is the inability to see things objectively. Perhaps what you did was a big deal. Or maybe, it just feels like it was. Pretend it was someone else that you love who did what you did. Ask yourself how you would view them. Own it, but don’t be owned by it Taking responsibility for what you did is important. But one bad choice doesn’t have to define you. You can’t control how others define you, but you can control how you define yourself. Grieve your loss If a tragedy was averted in your situation, focus on the good of that, and be thankful. If, however, a tragic loss occurred, know it’s okay to grieve the pain. Beating yourself up constantly is not a requirement of grief. Seek forgiveness from others Forgiveness from others can free you up to forgive yourself. If you haven’t yet, seek forgiveness from the person you hurt. Focus on what you can learn Everyone fails. Everyone hurts others eventually. It’s part of the human experience and condition. But not everyone will learn from what they do. Be someone who is willing to learn from your past to benefit your future. Record your reflections Sometimes capturing a record of your thoughts and feelings can help you face them honestly. Do some light journaling for a few days.
