A new study from the University of Zurich reports finding a link between the brain regions activated by generosity and those involved in happiness. Researchers gave participants a weekly allowance, with one group planning to keep the money for themselves and the other committing to spend it on others. Then, MRI imaging was used to study both groups’ brain activities. Participants who had pledged to use the stipend in a philanthropic manner, behaved more generously than those who didn’t. Confirming that the act of giving or even the intent to give activates the brain in a way that makes you feel happier. November 13, 1982 The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is dedicated in Washington, D.C. November 14, 1970 A chartered jet carrying most of the Marshall University football team crashes in West Virginia. November 19, 1824 A flood on the Neva River near St. Petersburg, Russia, claims an estimated 10,000 lives after an ice jam breaks apart and the water overwhelms the city’s dam. TIP 2 If you’re replacing a hinge to re-hang a door and you need to use the same holes, add grip by placing a matchstick or toothpick in the hole before rescrewing the attachments. Just break it off flush with the door jamb. It will add some security to the hole so it won’t be so loose. TIP 3 Stick a dryer sheet in the bottom of your trash can. It will give off a bit of fresh smell whenever something lands in the bag. TIP 4 Use a black permanent marker (like a Sharpie) to fix a small bleach spot on a black cotton top. Football Flick Supplies: Paper footballs (or mini footballs), buckets and pots, masking tape and markers to add scores. How to Play: Give each player paper footballs or these mini footballs and line up a bunch of buckets or baskets at varying length. Tape a number to each of the buckets – the furthest one should be 7 points, the middle should be 3 points, and the closest should be 1. Players have one minute to flick (like you’re playing paper football) footballs into the buckets, scoring as many points as possible in the minute. Or have teams play simultaneously by using different colored footballs, and see who can get to 21 points first.
THE GOBLET GOBBLE Supplies: Plastic goblets, orange ping pong balls. How to Play: Purchase glass or plastic goblets and place one per team/player on a table on a far side of the room. On the other side of the room, place orange ping pong balls. To play, players must transfer three ping pong balls from the table to their goblet on the opposite side of the room. The catch? They can only touch (and hold) the ping pong ball between their chin and their neck.
