TIP 1 Try kitty litter to remove grease stains off your concrete driveway. Pour several cups of plain litter over the stain and wait a couple of hours for it to soak up all the oil. Sweep up and remove the litter, then finish with a degreaser and the hose. TIP 2 If you see little flecks of white in your coffee, ask for a new cup and new creamer; it’s starting to turn. TIP 3 To get rid of mineral deposits or hard-water stains in your toilet, try dropping two Alka-Seltzer tablets in a flushed toilet and letting them bubble and sit overnight. In the morning, scrub with a toilet brush and flush until clear. TIP 4 Peeling a boiled potato? Drop it quickly in an ice bath, and the skin may just slip right off! DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE Do you know what to look for?
Misuse and abuse of drugs and alcohol among the elderly is one of the fastest growing health problems in the U.S., according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), yet it can often be mistaken for normal aging behavior. A recent report shows that the use of illicit drugs, combining drugs with alcohol, and the nonmedical use of pharmaceuticals, results in an average of nearly 300 emergency room visits nationwide each day for those aged 65 and older. Here are some important points to consider. Abuse triggers Retirement, the death of a spouse or dear friend, the loss of a pet and other significant life events, are times when the elderly are most likely to begin misusing or abusing drugs and alcohol.
Potential signs Many older people will hide their problem out of shame, and while substance abuse can mimic symptoms of other diseases, always consider the possibility of abuse if there are any major changes in behaviors, such as loss of interest in hobbies, activities or socializing, as well as changes in appetite and sleeping habits. Ask questions At times when loved ones appear sober and alert, start asking questions about their use of drugs and alcohol and if they think they have a problem. Speak frankly about your concerns and the risks of substance abuse, but also be sympathetic to the difficulties with which they’re dealing. Seek Help If you do suspect a substance abuse problem, contact his or her health care provider and discuss the best approach to getting appropriate treatment. Identifying substance abuse can be challenging, particularly when it comes to the elderly, but addressing the issue quickly is critical to their health and safety.

PAWS CORNER Q: How important do you think it is to get your pet microchipped? A: It’s entirely your decision whether to microchip your pets. Here are a few statistics to consider. A 2009 study cited by the American Veterinary Medical Association found that dogs without microchips were returned to their owners 22 percent of the time, whereas microchipped dogs were returned 52 percent of the time. Cats without microchips were reunited with their owners less than 2 percent of the time, whereas microchipped cats went back home 38 percent of the time. Even if your pets are indoor cats, which vastly improves their chances for healthy, long lives, accidents do happen. While a microchip doesn’t guarantee your cats will be found and reunited with you, it does greatly improve the odds.

More specifically, they read books, blogs and papers on subjects outside their industry to widen their knowledge and discover new connections. 3. Find new surroundings The physical space around us has a surprising impact on our thought processes. Spending time brainstorming away from the desk can be surprisingly productive. 4. Broaden your horizons Traveling is a great way to see how the rest of the world lives. You can get inspiration from seeing new ways of doing things or discovering needs you didn’t know existed. 5. Fail Sometimes our biggest failures can set the stage for our grandest successes. As Steven Tyler said in a famous Aerosmith song, “You’ve got to lose to know how to win.” 6. Evaluate your goals Maybe your struggle for inspiration is symptomatic of a deeper issue. Are your efforts actually being focused in the right direction? 7. • Give a card to celebrate a child’s achievement. Find a blank card or make a card and inscribe it with a message celebrating a child’s act of kindness, athletic achievement, good grades— whatever. Kids love getting their own cards.

• Clean up your language. It’s easy to fall into the habit of using profanity, and it sounds anything but kind to those around you. • Send a bouquet on a random day. • Do laundry for a new mother. New parents are often overwhelmed, so why not show them some kindness? If a relative has recently had a baby, offer to wash, dry, and fold her clothes.

NEVER PAY FOR IT TWICE
Give yourself a little help to save both money and time
AARP, better known as the American Association of Retired Persons, is the organization set up to protect the interests of seniors. To the surprise of some, however, they are coming under fire for sending out too many renewal notices. Why is that a problem? It seems the motivation is what’s coming under question. Far too often, whenever seniors receive a bill in the mail, they just automatically write a check. In the face of continual renewal notices, it’s very possible that many seniors end up accidentally sending in multiple checks to cover the same year of service. Even worse, they can end up with multiple (and redundant) AARP accounts, and end up paying dues on all of them.
Looking for solutions? Here’s an idea. Keep a small notebook handy, possibly in a kitchen drawer or a desk where you typically sit when you’re paying bills and writing checks. Keep a list of expiration dates for all of the services you make payments for. Each month, review the list again to see which items are coming up for renewal. If your credit card is due to expire in October, you’ll know when to start watching the mail for its replacement. If your car inspection sticker expires in July, make a note to get it taken care of ahead of time. Check magazine mailing labels. The expiration date will typically be right on them. Because important things do get lost in the mail, here are a few more things to note on your list: property taxes (if you don’t pay them with your mortgage), any quarterly payments, bank box fees, ending period for any discount you’re getting on your Internet service or zero-interest credit card, furnace or HVAC inspection, last date to sign up for something important, and so much more. Once you start using a list like this, you’ll wonder how you managed without it.

Which is better for weight loss?
When it comes to weight loss, the split should be roughly 80 percent focus on what you eat and 20 percent on exercise. “It’s all about calories in and calories out. If you’re eating less and exercising, you’re going to burn more calories,” says Courtney McCormick, dietitian at Nutrisystem. To achieve a healthier lifestyle, try these quick tips! Eat more often A recent study found that on average, people who ate six times or more daily consumed fewer calories, had a lower body mass index, and ate more nutrient-rich foods than those who didn’t eat at least six times a day. Eating smaller meals every three hours keeps you feeling full, controls blood sugar and helps boost metabolism. Watch portions American portions have become too big; and those
used to dining out may consider restaurant portions to be correct, when they’re often four times as large as what’s recommended. When eating out, ask for a to-go box and save half for later. Veg out Vegetables are low in calories, high in filling fiber and loaded with nutrients. For breakfast, add spinach to an omelet; at lunch, pile your sandwich high with fixings like tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, or use lettuce as a wrap instead of bread. Drink more water A study found that when people drank six cups (48 ounces) of cold water, they increased their resting calorie burn by up to 50 calories each day. Another study found that dieters who drank two eight-ounce glasses of water before meals lost 36 percent more weight over three months than those who didn’t sip before sitting down to eat. Get moving The CDC recommends 150 minutes of aerobic activity weekly, but research suggests that it doesn’t matter if you exercise for two-and-a-half hours straight or break it up into 10-minute chunks.

MEMORIAL DAY IT’S ALMOST HERE!
A little history, and some helpful hints for making it more memorable! Technically, summer doesn’t start until June 21. But many people consider Memorial Day to be the unofficial start of the season. This year, we celebrate the holiday on May 28. Many families will heat up the grill, head to the beach or take in a big blockbuster movie. But Memorial Day has the word “memorial” in it for a reason. The holiday got started on May 30, 1868, when Union General John A. Logan declared the day an occasion to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Twenty years later, the name was changed to Memorial Day. On May 11, 1950, Congress passed a resolution requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. President Richard M. Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday of May. It is an occasion to honor the men and women who died in all wars.
Here are some ways you can honor the men and women who serve our country: • Put flags or flowers on the graves of men and women who served in wars. • Fly the U.S. flag at half-staff until noon. • Visit monuments dedicated to soldiers, sailors and marines. • Participate in a National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m. local time. • March in a parade. • Host a Memorial Day BBQ for your neighbors and friends. During the party, encourage all attendees to write a thank you letter to a soldier serving in the military overseas.

Remembering Those Who Served It is customary to mark Memorial Day by visiting graveyards and war monuments. One of the biggest Memorial Day traditions is for the President or Vice President to give a speech and lay a wreath on soldiers’ graves in the largest national cemetery, Arlington National Cemetery, in Virginia. Most communities have local Memorial Day celebrations.
