Is what you learned in history class wrong?
If you think your history lessons in school were completely factual, you may be mistaken. “Much of what you know about history may be limited or even wrong,” says Marc Wilson, author of Kidnapped by Columbus, a new historical novel. “All too often, legends, poems and myths are emphasized in favor of more complex truths. History is usually written by the victors, not the victims.” With that in mind, here are three historical facts that may surprise you. Columbus a Kidnapper “In 1492, Columbus sailed the Ocean Blue,” says the famous poem that most Americans know. But Columbus never landed on or even saw North America, and when he sailed in the Caribbean and along the coast of Central and South America, he kidnapped natives to act as guides in his search for gold and the Garden of Eden. Before
At the end of his first voyage, he kidnapped six natives from the island of Hispaniola and took the “Indians” to Spain to prove that he’d reached India. Native Americans have been mislabeled as “Indians” ever since.

Washington’s Cherry Tree As the myth goes, young George Washington couldn’t tell a lie and confessed to his father that he damaged his cherry tree. Truth be told, one of his biographers, Mason Locke Weems, had no such problem with “little lies” and fabricated this whopper in the fifth edition of his Washington biography, entitled “The Life of Washington” in 1806. Washington also never wore wooden dentures. He had different dentures made from gold, ivory and even lead. Napoleon: Not Short Napoleon wasn’t actually that short. At the end of his life he was measured at 5 feet 2 inches, but those were French inches, which are longer than British inches. Moving beyond your comfort zone may be hard but helpful
Sometimes what keeps us from getting what we want in life is our reluctance to change our routines and habits. Here are some ways to step out of your comfort zone and into greatness: Face a fear you have Do you have a fear that’s been hanging around a while? It comes to mind and then goes dormant for lack of pushing yourself? Think of that one fear that may be holding you back from your potential and set a goal to tackle it in the next three months. Do what scares you Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” How powerful that would be to make a conscious effort to do what scares you. Start by making a list of three things at the beginning of the week and challenge yourself to do each one during the week. Make it fun and see what transpires.
Make a bold move Sometimes we just need to throw our hats over the wall and take a big risk for big rewards. The first step is to set a goal that is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-limited. Then create a plan with action steps. Now take one small action every day towards your goal, or at least once a week. Have tough conversations “A person’s success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have,” says Author Tim Ferris. Having a conversation with a friend, loved one or co-worker about something that bothers you in the relationship is one of the most difficult and courageous things to do. Try something new A way to step out of what is familiar is to explore new and different things. You can start by creating a bucket list, a list where you write down all the experiences you would like to do in your lifetime like travel to certain places, run a marathon, do yoga, write a book, play an instrument, ride a zip line, become an entrepreneur, etc. This bucket list is a great way to help you think of new ways to step out of your comfort zone!

June 13, 1895 Emile Levassor drives a Panhard et Levassor car with a two-cylinder, 750-rpm, four-horsepower engine to victory in the world’s first real automobile race. He completed the 732-mile course in just under 49 hours, at a then-impressive speed of about 15 mph. June 14, 1951 The U.S. Census Bureau dedicates UNIVAC, the world’s first commercially produced electronic digital computer. Weighing 16,000 pounds, UNIVAC used 5,000 vacuum tubes, and could perform about 1,000 calculations per second. June 16, 1963 Aboard Vostok 6, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova becomes the first woman to travel into space. Is improving your health rooted in an ancient Chinese secret?
Tai chi, an exercise regimen from China, has been found to be an effective technique for relaxation and a generally safe method to encourage older people to get up and move around.
Tai chi movements help strengthen and tone the muscles in the lower body, and also promote better posture, which aligns the spine, neck and head, relieving pressure on the lower back. A study in “Annals of Behavioral Medicine” indicates that older people who benefit from these strengthening exercises say they feel less limited in their physical abilities, which gives them a renewed sense of selfconfidence. Tai chi’s adherents claim the slow, gentle dancelike movements make it as effective as yoga in helping them to relax, especially when they feel anxious or tense about a situation in their lives. There is also some evidence that when used in combination with diet and medication, tai chi may enhance blood pressure control.
Before listing the possible benefits that can be derived from tai chi, here’s a reminder to check with your doctor before you begin any type of exercise program. According to a number of studies, tai chi’s choreographed exercises promote flexibility. It may help promote recovery from falls (an all-too-common problem for older people). And since it can enhance balance and coordination, those who are trained in the practice may find themselves less likely to experience falling.
To do tai chi correctly, you should find a class that offers it. Check with your local rec center. Videos may be helpful, too. Be patient. It takes time to develop expertise, but you should have a good grasp of the movements within a few weeks.

Fifty Shades Freed (R) Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) has made an honest woman of Anastasia Steele (Dakota Fanning), and they settle into married bliss, which is not necessarily a paradise of perfection. Despite their billions of dollars and their charmed, exacting existence, the Greys have dangers to deal with that have nothing to do with handcuffs or whips. Even Christian cannot exert control over the past, which has its own punishment to mete out. If you tolerated the pain of the first two films, this is much the same and remains consistently predictable according to the formula. Game Night (R) Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams star as Max and Annie, an ultracompetitive and sweet couple who host a regular game night with their circle of friends—snappy duo Michelle and Kevin, Ryan with date Sarah and Max’s bigger, better, realer brother Brooks. The sibling rivalry is not subtle, and Brooks decides to one-up the game by hosting an interactive mystery experience at his swanky pad. It’s all fun and games until there’s an assault and kidnapping. When Brooks is dragged away in real life, Max and Annie go off the board to track him down and solve the mystery. This clever action comedy didn’t get the credit it deserved in theaters, and it makes a great watch for your gathering of friends, competitive or not.
