Why do we refuse it?
Far too many of us say no to help when we’re discharged from the hospital or rehab, even though studies have shown that too often we end up even worse off when we refuse home health care. Why do we make these choices? • The situation isn’t correctly explained to us. Worse is if the hospital doesn’t understand the Medicare guidelines and doesn’t offer us home health care. There’s a difference between “home care” and “home health care.” One involves skilled care and the other personal care. If we’re on Medicare and have functional limitations, Medicare will pay for home health care services. • We don’t know who is paying for it. • Discharge information is confusing, especially if it involves new medications.
• We don’t want strangers in our homes. (Or we’ll agree to it while we’re still in the hospital, just to get them to leave us alone, but once care workers show up, we won’t let them in.) • We don’t think we need help or that relatives will help us. • We had a negative experience in the past with home health care. What happens if we refuse care? A fair percentage of us will be readmitted to the hospital within 30 to 60 days. We might be in worse shape than the first time we went in, especially if we don’t take the medications correctly or we end up with an infection. Be smart. If you’re being discharged from the hospital or rehab, ask whether you’re getting a “nurse visit” within 24 hours. If you get a blank look, start asking more questions. At the same time, if you’re told you will get home health care and you don’t like it, accept the situation at least for a few weeks. Your health depends on it.

In an amazing show of cooperation, both the House and Senate pushed a new GI bill through in only a few weeks. The biggest change is that there will no longer be a 15-year limit on using educational benefits. Other changes include: • Expanded benefits to surviving spouses and dependents of service members who died in the line of duty • Veterans who were partway through their education when their school abruptly closed will be able to have benefits restored for any credits that don’t transfer. • Reservists and Purple Heart recipients will now get their benefits. • Veterans who seek degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) will get more benefits. • Schools will be required to train those who help enroll veterans, and to provide more campus vocation and educational counseling. Studies show seniors are gravitating more toward devices
According to a recent Pew Research Center study, more and more senioes are adopting technology into their lives. Seniors are using cellphones, tablets, computers, the internet, social media—all of it. Here are couple interesting stats Pew uncovered: • Some 42 percent of seniors own smartphones, a number that has quadrupled in the past few years. Age plays a part, with 59 percent of the 65-69 group owning smartphones. When it’s any type of cellphone (not just a smartphone), the number is significantly higher. • An average 67 percent of seniors are on the internet, but again, use depends on age. The 65-69 group
comes in at 82 percent. Those with a college education rated a whopping 92 percent. Three-quarters of seniors are on the internet daily; once they get used to it, they apparently like it, especially for news and games. • Half of seniors have internet at home, and income plays a part in this. Those who earn more than $75,000 are significantly more likely to have internet access at home than those who have incomes below $30,000. • One-third of seniors are on social media, and one-third of us own a tablet. • In spite of the stats, not many seniors feel confident when it comes to using the new technology. Nearly half need someone to help set up the new devices they get. But that’s okay. As long as you get help to hook everything up and install software, it doesn’t matter where it comes from, be it the nearest 15-year-old or the company’s tech support staff. And if you get stuck, there’s always the internet to look to for help!

Tips for keeping kids safe when you’re the one raising youngsters
According to data from The Pew Charitable Trusts, 2.9 million grandparents were raising their grandchildren in 2015 compared with 2.5 million in 2005. Oftentimes, grandparents become primary caregivers due to unforeseen circumstances. Here are three things those taking on this responsibility should consider. Protect Their Financial Future A recent study found 30 percent of all households don’t have life insurance. Grandparents should be sure their coverage is up to date. They might also consider purchasing term insurance (life insurance issued for a limited period of time). More affordable than a whole life policy, it provides financial security for the golden years, helps supplement retirement income and can assist with final expenses. A term life insurance policy can even help pay off a mortgage, so grandparents can have peace of mind knowing that dependents have a roof over
their heads and can also be used for other child-rearing expenses, such as college tuition. Keep Them Safe Accidental injury is the leading cause of death for children up to 14 years old, and more than a third of accident-related deaths happen in the home, reports KidsHealth. To create a safe living environment for younger children, secure large furniture to walls, purchase safety gates for staircases, and install outlet covers, corner protectors, security locks and appliance latches. It might also be a good time to update in-home safety features for grandparents, too. Handrails provide better grip on staircases, and anti-slip mats and grab bars in the bathroom can add extra stability. Promote Smarter Driving Encourage teens to drive safely. A 2015 statistic from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says six teens die every day in car crashes in the US, and this is the number one killer of teens. It turns out that we might need them as much as they need us
One of the saddest things I’ve overheard lately was a woman who had just lost her very senior cat. She had loved that cat for years and would have made a great owner for another one from the local shelter. But she hesitated, afraid she would die before the cat did, and then the cat would go to the shelter and possibly be put down. I hope there aren’t many of you who feel that way. Shelters are full of cats and dogs that need love, and seniors can be the best pet owners around. Consider what a cat or dog can do for you. If you have a dog, it needs to be walked at least once a day. That’s exercise for you, and
often it can lead to more social interaction as you meet others doing the same thing. Maybe a pet-walking group will form in the neighborhood. Any pet needs regular meals and water, and maybe even medication if you adopt one with special needs. That keeps us on track with a daily schedule. Cats and dogs can be comical, making you laugh, and just having a pet around is shown to reduce stress. Cats need to be brushed every day and generally love that bonding time. Dogs love to go to the groomer if you can’t do it yourself. If you hesitate to have a pet now because you might not outlive it, make arrangements in advance. Put your wishes in writing, notify your children or attorney that the document exists, put an “In case of emergency” note on the inside of your door, and then take a stroll through the local animal shelter. Look for a wagging tail or the eyes that meet yours.

Big events that occurred in the month of September
September 11, 1985 Cincinnati Reds player-manager Pete Rose gets the 4,192nd hit of his career, breaking Ty Cobb’s majorleague record. Rose retired in 1986, but remained in his position as manager until 1989, when he was banned from baseball for gambling on Reds games. September 11, 2001 At 8:45 a.m., an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
The impact left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more in higher floors. Then, 18 minutes after the first plane hit, a second Boeing 767–United Airlines Flight 175–appeared out of the sky, turned sharply toward the World Trade Center, and sliced into the south tower at about the 60th floor. The collision caused a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and the streets below. America was under attack. September 13, 1814 Francis Scott Key pens a poem that is later set to music and in 1931 becomes America’s national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The poem, originally titled “The Defence of Fort McHenry,” was written after Key witnessed the Maryland fort being bombarded by the British during the War of 1812. September 14, 1964 Writer John Steinbeck is presented the U.S. Medal of Freedom. His first novel, “Tortilla Flat,” about the comic antics of several rootless drifters who share a house in California, was published in 1935.
