Big events that occurred in the month of October
October 17, 1931 Gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion and fined $80,000, signaling the downfall of one of the most notorious criminals of the 1920s and 1930s. Alphonse Gabriel Capone was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1899 to Italian immigrants. October 18, 1867 U.S. takes possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less than two cents an acre. At the time, it was not known that gold was there. The Alaska purchase comprised 586,412 square miles, about twice the size of Texas, and was championed by William Henry Seward. October 22, 1962 The Cuban Missile Crisis begins. In a televised speech of extraordinary gravity, President John F. Kennedy announces that U.S. spy planes have discovered Soviet missile bases in Cuba. These missile sites—
under construction but nearing completion—housed medium-range missiles capable of striking a number of major cities in the United States, including Washington, D.C. October 26, 1881 The Earp brothers face off against the ClantonMcLaury gang in a legendary shootout at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. After silver was discovered nearby in 1877, Tombstone quickly grew into one of the richest mining towns in the Southwest. The struggle between these two groups for control of Tombstone and Cochise County ended in a blaze of gunfire at the OK Corral.

LIVING SOLEY ON SOCIAL SECURITY Plan ahead to avoid unpleasant surprises
A big percentage of retired seniors only have Social Security for income. The average Social Security benefit is $1,409.91 per month. Taken together, those two facts can be scary, but less so if you make plans in advance. If you know you’ll have only Social Security, there are big steps you can take now. Consider moving to a location with a lower cost of living. Share your home with someone. Wait as long as possible before collecting Social Security. It’s the smaller steps, however, that can make or break your efforts to live only on Social Security. Start your planning a year in advance. Call Social Security and find out what your benefit amount is going to be. Be sure to calculate the deduction that will automatically come out for Medicare. Practice for at least six months (a year is better) living on that smaller amount to be sure it can be done. Calculate your monthly expenses and keep track of every dime you spend to identify places you can cut back. Get on a “budget billing” plan for utilities so you’re billed the same amount each month. Give serious consideration to having a Medicare supplement plan to take care of medical expenses that Medicare doesn’t cover (for more information call Cruz Insurance Advisors at 623-826-2580). Use your extra money to pay off all credit cards. Have car maintenance done. Pay ahead on property taxes. Consider what items you need to buy now, while you have income. If self-employed, be aware of your tax situation, and what you’ll owe when. Become familiar with senior services in your area so you know where and what they are. Think it through before you jump. For many seniors, it’s the only option.

An unwavering focus helps you to keep perspective in the face of sudden setbacks. Don’t let short–term profits, negative feedback or a hectic schedule prevent you from taking the next step towards your goal. 4. Commitment Mentally tough people are more consistent than others. They don’t miss deadlines, appointments or meetings. Part of mental toughness is a commitment to always show up, to always deliver and to not get side-tracked; to always finish what you have started. 5. A realistic perspective on failure Knowing how to handle failure is an important aspect of being mentally strong. Viewing failure as a learning process can stimulate success. October is the perfect time to get to those home maintenance items you keep shuffling to the side. The good news is most can be done yourself in a minimal amount of time. Doing the small things on this list will increase the efficiency of your home while keeping your energy costs down! Change your filters Jump on a ladder and get those fresh air filters in! Don’t forget the one most often missed—the furnace filter (which is usually at the bottom of the unit). Changing it or cleaning it will make the furnace work more efficiently when the weather cools. Check weather stripping Can you see a lot of light under that door? Chances are you need new weather stripping to seal it up again. You can buy weather stripping at any home improvement store. Just follow the directions for installation.
Change batteries This is the perfect time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Clean dryer vents A clogged dryer vent can cause fires. Simply remove the silver venting attached to the dryer and vacuum out the vent. Clean ceiling fan blades When you climb up to reverse the fan’s direction for the winter, clean those fan blades. It’s amazing how much dust they collect! Clean gutters If your house has gutters, pull out your ladder and clean them out. After the monsoon storms this summer, they are most likely filled with debris. This will keep them clear for the winter storm season. Call a professional While cleaning gutters do a visual check of your roof. If you see missing tiles or vents call a professional roofer to inspect and fix them. Also, call the pros for maintenance checks on your heating system. Routine home maintenance will keep your home in top shape.
