Don’t let stress sabotage your relationship

“Stress impacts our love relationships more than we are aware of or acknowledge,” according to Judy Ford, a licensed clinical social worker. “Even when a couple tries to ignore stress, like static in the air, it is felt and absorbed. If partners do talk about being stressed, they may not know what to do about it,” she added. Also, “stress is contagious.” Ford compared stress to a game of ping-pong, where the tension “bounces back and forth between partners.” Partners become both unable to relax and enjoy each other, she said. Stress “shows up in our actions, our behavior, and in both verbal and non-verbal communications,” so it’s bound to not only affect both partners but also their relationship. Ford shares the following advice for protecting your relationship from stress. Recognize stress symptoms Couples often become so accustomed to unchecked stress that they barely recognize it. How do you know when your partner (or you) is stressed? Look for these signs: one or both of you are snappy, cranky, withdrawn, moody, pouty, teary, ornery, angry, restless, hyper, agitated, overly excited. Or, one of you is self-medicating with drugs, alcohol, food, etc. Listen Learn how to listen. We all want the person we love to listen and understand what we’re going through. Unfortunately, listening is a skill few people actually do well, so make an effort to learn how to become an active listener. Comfort Many partners forget to console their significant other and instead try to problem solve. But, as Ford said, “Comfort each other first, problem solve second.” That’s because your partner might be looking for stress relief rather than a nitty-gritty brainstorming session. Just hugging and gently touching your partner can provide that relief. Ask your partner what you can do An important way of supporting your loved one is to ask them flat-out how you can help. According to Ford, you might say: “Is there anything I can do to make your day go smoother?” If your partner isn’t sure, “notice what might be helpful and do that.” It might be anything from doing a few chores to giving them a relaxing back rub. HERE’S A TIP

TIP 1 To test the seals on your refrigerator and freezer, close a piece of paper in the door. If you can pull it out easily, it’s likely that your seal is loose. Clean or replace door gaskets for a better seal. TIP 2 To clean the microwave, try adding the juice of half a lemon to a cup of water and setting to boil (four minutes) in the microwave. Let the steam circulate for an additional four minutes, then remove the cup and wipe down all sides of interior. Use the cut lemon to clean a wooden cutting board. Sprinkle with salt and scrub, then rinse and dry. TIP 3 Use a seam ripper, meant for sewing, to remove hair that is wrapped around the beater bar of your vacuum. TIP 4 Packing small jewelry for a trip? Consider using a pill minder—the plastic storage bins with seven days or more that are used to organize medicine. These work very well.

SOCIAL ISOLATION LINKED TO BONE LOSS

That’s scary, and for those of you who don’t have much time for socializing, it serves as a wakeup call. What are you going to do about it?

If you ever wanted a compelling reason to join a group or get out more, here it is: A new study shows that poor social relationships contribute to bone loss in senior women.

The first thing that comes to mind is any activity that encourages interaction with others. Even a weekly reading group at the library, with participants commenting on the book they read and adding thoughts to others’ comments, has the potential to evolve further into coffee afterward, phone numbers swapped and invitations to other activities.

This wasn’t a small, brief study. In this Women’s Health Initiative, researchers studied the bone health of 11,000 women over six years and included information about social support and social functioning. The bottom line: Over those six years, high social stress equated to lowered bone mineral density in the femoral neck (where most hip fractures occur), the lumbar spine and the whole hip. They assigned a rating to levels of “social strain,” and found that each additional point added to the lowered bone density.

The same goes for dog walking at the animal shelter, bus trips with the senior center, walking clubs around town, board-games night at the library and neighborhood yard sales. As a place to look for local activities, search online for the Red Hat Society (www.redhatsociety.com).

Five ways to stay calm in the midst of chaos

Being calm isn’t always easy, especially when chaos erupts around you. You have to cultivate a practice of being calm—and consistency is the key here. More important than the length of time that you practice is doing it consistently every day. Three minutes every day will bring you the results you want quicker than one hour of practice once a week. Here are a number of tips to help you stay calm: Make a decision to create calm in your life Do it even when life gets chaotic. This decision is powerful in helping you maintain your daily practice. Know that this is possible to achieve, even if it seems impossible when you start. Keep going and the results will come. Don’t give up. If you forget one day, start again the next day. Remember, you’re learning a new habit.

Take time for yourself—every day To stay sane, you must take at least a few minutes, (15 - 30 minutes or more is better) to be with yourself. Go outside, take a walk, look at the sky. Process your emotions If you are upset about something, or with someone, give yourself time to recognize the emotions and allow them. It’s important not to stuff emotions, and also not to start yelling at someone who has hurt you either. Practice gratitude When life feels like a struggle, it’s easy to get caught up in looking at everything that is wrong. Write down 5 things every day you are grateful for—simple things like breathing, walking down the street, enjoying the fresh morning air and your morning coffee.

Combat indoor allergens Animal dander, dust mites and mold are common allergens found indoors that can cause asthma symptoms. Keeping a clean home can help keep the presence of such allergens in check.

Know your own triggers Avoiding and controlling your asthma triggers all begins with identifying them. Work with your doctor to find out what allergens or irritants may be causing your asthma symptoms; an allergy test can help.

PAWS CORNER Q: My friend and I have new puppies, and we get together once a week to socialize them. One thing that worries me is my puppy, “Tex,” and my friend’s puppy “Geno” sniff each other and then almost immediately start fighting. Is this normal? A: There are some clear signals that dogs make to indicate if they’re fighting vs. playing, including stiff bodies; hair on back standing up, pinned back ears, tense bodies, closed mouths and curled lips, low, warning growls. A real fight typically won’t last very long and one dog will run away with tail tucked. When play fighting, dogs will typically approach each other with open mouths that are relaxed and they take turns chasing each other, wrestling and falling on thir back exposing their bellies.

Honor Flights Network, a nonprofit, wants to change that. Since 2010, it has escorted 222,133 veterans to see the memorial, at no cost to the veteran. Last year HFN took 21,000 veterans to Washington. The one-day trips leave from a “hub” in most states and fly to Washington, where they visit the memorial dedicated to them, as well as the Vietnam and Korean memorials. These trips are scheduled multiple times a year.

If we’ve been inactive for many years, it’s easy to just assume that there’s nothing we can do at our age to increase our health and longevity. Not so, according to a new study. A large University of Cambridge study of 14,000 participants over nearly 13 years assessed diet, alcohol consumption, body mass index, occupation—and physical activity levels—and compared those with mortality risk from any condition. Here’s what was discovered: Those who were sedentary and remained sedentary had a higher risk of mortality. Those who started with low activity levels but increased them had additional longevity benefits. Specifically, the risk of death decreased 24% for a low increase in activity, 38% for a medium increase, and 42% for a high increase in activity.

In other words, even if we’ve been very sedentary, becoming more active now lowers our mortality risk. Many researchers (and the World Health Organization) still say that 150 minutes per week of moderateintensity exercise is what we all need. They even break it down into minutes of activities like dog walking or gardening, all the way up to running and playing tennis. But that doesn’t mean we should all do 150 minutes of cycling or jogging per week, especially without medical advice. Yes, we can gain longevity if we become more active, but it shouldn’t be at the risk of our current health. Get your doctor’s opinion. Ask for a plan to gradually increase your activity level. How many minutes of which activity should you do each week? If you’re going to walk, where will you do that? If you want at-home exercise equipment, what kind? If your doctor’s office has a sports medicine department, ask about being assessed on its equipment. Consider upping your activity level, but do it safely.

BREAKING THE CYCLE OF LONELINESS Change your habits and make new friends!

According to an AARP study, one-third of seniors are lonely. Another study revealed that loneliness and social isolation can cause increased mortality. Yet another study talks about cognitive decline and depression. It can be a vicious cycle: If you’re depressed, you don’t want to go out, which makes you more socially isolated, which worsens your depression. You might not feel valued, especially if you’ve recently retired, or you’ve lost a spouse and therefore your previous social group, or you don’t know if you’d be welcome in new places. There are a number of ways to fight loneliness, but you have to take the steps to break the cycle. The biggest (and sometimes hardest) step is to get out of the house. Just go. Talk to people while you’re out. You never know what doors might open just

by saying hello to someone. They might be just as lonely as you! Start a new hobby, ideally one that involves others. Get off the computer. Many turn to technology and social media, but it’s really not a cure for loneliness, and may make one more vulnerable to scams. Join a group, whether at the senior center or library, ideally a group where people have to talk anyway, such as a reading group. Take a class. Have you tried tai chi? If you knit or crochet, find a group that meets once a week to socialize and make hats and mittens for kids. Do you dance or sing? Square dancing is energizing, and choirs are uplifting. Volunteering to walk dogs at the humane society accomplishes two things: you interact with others and you train a dog to become a better pet for a potential adopter. No, you won’t become close pals with everyone you meet, but you are likely to develop a few quality relationships. You just need to take the first steps.

Add order to kitchen cupboards When organizing cabinets, place everyday items such as cups and dishes in easily accessible cupboards, and store things that you use less frequently, like fine china, on the harder-to-reach shelves. Store your food by category, such as breakfast or baking, with the items that are most-used placed front and center. If you stock up on food for the grandkids, make a snack zone, so they don’t rifle through other shelves when they’re over and hungry.

Ingredients • 1 (4-serving) package sugar-free vanilla cookand-serve pudding mix • 2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder • 1 cup unsweetened orange juice • ½ cup water • 2 cups fresh peeled and sliced peaches • 1 (6-ounce) purchased graham-cracker pie crust • 1 (8-ounce) package fatfree cream cheese • Sugar substitute to equal 2 tablespoons sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 cup fat-free whipped topping • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions 1. In a large saucepan, combine dry pudding mix, dry milk powder, orange juice and water. Cook over medium heat until mixture thickens and starts to boil, stirring occasionally. 2. Tips for keeping more in control

We all worry and get upset from time to time. It’s a normal part of life, right? But what happens when that anxiety or anger takes over, and you can’t calm down? Being able to calm yourself in the moment is often easier said than done. Here are a few strategies to help. Breathe “Breathing is the number one and most effective technique for reducing anger and anxiety quickly,” says Scott Dehorty, LCSW-C, of Delphi Behavioral Health. Admit that you’re anxious or angry Allow yourself to say that you’re anxious or angry. When you label how you’re feeling and allow yourself to express it, the anxiety and anger you’re experiencing may decrease. Challenge your thoughts Part of being anxious or angry is having irrational thoughts that don’t necessarily make sense. These thoughts are often the “worst-case scenario.” You might find yourself caught in the “what if” cycle, which can cause you to sabotage a lot of things in your life. When you experience one of these thoughts, stop and ask yourself the following questions: • Is this likely to happen? • Is this a rational thought? • Has this ever happened to me before? • What’s the worst that can happen? Can I handle that? Visualize yourself calm After taking a few deep breaths, close your eyes and picture yourself calm. See your body relaxed, and imagine yourself working through a stressful or anxietycausing situation by staying calm and focused. By creating a mental picture of what it looks like to stay calm, you can refer back to that image when you’re anxious. Think it through Have a mantra to use in critical situations. Just make sure it’s one that you find helpful. Try these: “Will this matter to me this time next week?” or “How important is this?” or “Am I going to allow this person/situation to steal my peace?” This allows the thinking to shift focus, and you can “reality test” the situation. A fun sunny day activity

First, enjoy searching for and collecting flat items in nature or familiar small objects around you. Arrange them on a readily available sunpaper product and place them under the power of the direct sun. Within minutes, interesting shapes will appear like magic. Art! Here’s what you need: • A sunny day • Gathered flat nature finds such as leaves, ferns and feathers, or objects in your home like a key, toy or lace—anything you want to print in silhouette • Sunprint treated paper available at art stores and online • Cardboard and clips or a clipboard • Plastic wrap • Flat container such as a 12-inch-by-12-inch baking pan, filled with water • Clothesline and clips (optional)

Here’s the fun: 1. Choose an item or items to fit the paper. You might want to play with an arrangement on a practice sheet of plain paper the size of your sunprint paper. 2. In the shade, clip the sunprint paper on a piece of cardboard or a clipboard. Arrange items on the paper. 3. Set plastic wrap over the items and put in direct sunlight for about two minutes, until the paper turns light blue. Or, follow directions on your sunprint paper product. 4. Remove objects and soak paper in water for about a minute. Dry flat or hang with clips from a clothesline. When dry, enjoy your masterpiece. Processing Tip A teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide in the rinsing water intensifies the blue of the paper and makes for even more interesting results.

While there is some conflicting research that questions the impact of eating breakfast for weight loss, many researchers conclude there many other benefits for starting your day with a morning meal. Briana Rodriquez, a registered dietitian with Jenny Craig, offers the inside scoop on breakfast. Breakfast basics “Blood sugar, also known as glucose, powers your muscles and brain. After 7-9 hours of sleep, blood sugar is naturally low and you need to replenish your energy stores.” But what if there’s no time to spare in the morning? Rest assured, there are quick, easy breakfasts you can grab on-the-go. Why breakfast matters Although skipping meals or eating very little in the morning may seem like a sure-fire way to lose weight, Rodriquez explains it’s not so simple. “When you skip breakfast, you’ll likely overcompensate later, eating your largest meal at night because you’re extremely hungry. And that’s not good if your intention is weight loss.” Making breakfast your largest meal of the day, also known as “front-loading,” can lead to a healthier weight. Breakfast and lunch should be satisfying, protein-rich and include a small amount of healthy fats and carbohydrates.

Little (PG-13) High-tech firm CEO Jordan Sanders (Regina Hall) is a boss—but not the nice kind. She has a run-in with a kid magician who wishes that Jordan was a kid too (so, she could get the comeuppance she deserves) and lo and behold, she wakes up 13 years old (played by Marsai Martin). Her overburdened assistant April (Issa Rae) is left to hold down the company while the newly teen Jordan is humbled at middle school—but not before parading around like a tyrant.
