Five ways to commemorate your relationship
Falling in love is one of the greatest feelings in the world. Staying in love, however, is work. A strong relationship is something that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Relationship experts say one of the best things you can do for your relationship is to celebrate your love. Here are some ways to do just that: 1. Take pictures Throughout most moments of the day, you probably have your phone ready to snap a quick photo to share on social media. Remember to take a few photos of just you and your partner for just you and your partner. Capturing moments together gives you a visual reminder of love and reinforces “togetherness.” If you’re feeling creative, make a photo album of the moments you shared together. 2. Write notes Leave a note on the bathroom mirror. Tuck a piece of paper with a thoughtful message in your partner’s coat
pocket. Scribble a note down on the back of the electric bill and leave it next to the coffee pot. These notes don’t have to be long love letters, just a simple note to make your partner smile. 3. INGREDIENTS • ½ cup fat-free sour cream • S ugar substitute to equal ½ cup, suitable for baking • 1 cup mashed ripe bananas • 1 egg or equivalent in egg substitute • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1½ cups reduced-fat biscuit baking mix • ¼ cup chopped walnuts INSTRUCTIONS 1. Heat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9x5-inch loaf pan with butter-flavored cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine sour cream, sugar substitute, mashed bananas, egg and vanilla extract. Add baking mix and walnuts. Mix well to combine. 2. S pread batter into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. The new shingles vaccine can be hard to find
Ninety-nine percent of us over the age of 40 had chickenpox when we were kids. That virus is still in our bodies...and it can reactivate at any time as shingles. Do you know someone who has had shingles? Did their experience make you want to rush to the doctor for the shingles vaccine? If you did get the vaccine years ago, do you feel confident knowing it offers a protection rate of only 50 percent, and only for a few years? Fear not, they say...there’s a new, more effective shingles vaccine, available since 2017. Shingrix offers protection at a 90 percent rate. It’s taken in two doses, two to six months apart.
Unlike the old vaccine, this one will still be at least 85 percent effective four years after you get it. Researchers say one in three will get shingles because our immune systems decline as we age. If you’re over the age of 50, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, you should have the Shingrix vaccine. If you had the old vaccine between the ages of 50 and 59, we might not be covered in later years. Finding the new vaccine, however, might be a problem. It’s easy to find locations that give the shot, but whether they have it on hand is another matter. Start by calling your doctor’s office to see if they have it in stock and if you should have it. (There might be reasons you shouldn’t.) If you need it but the doctor doesn’t have it, put your ZIP code in the search box on vaccinefinder.org and start making calls to local pharmacies. Be sure to specify Shingrix. You might be put on a wait list. And don’t forget your Medicare or insurance card because Shingrix is expensive!

What studies are discovering by Matilda Charles
Seniors must be fascinating to researchers because it seems they’re always studying them. Here are a few things they’ve learned through Pew Research Center studies: • With all the drama nowadays about “fake news,” and with senior’s age-enhanced ability to sniff out lies, it would seem that we’d be excellent at discerning what’s real and what isn’t. Not so, according to a study. Five thousand participants of all ages were presented with five factual statements and five opinion statements. Turns out the younger age groups were much better at identifying both the factual and opinion news items than seniors. • Seniors are more likely to be religious, which researchers identified as meaning being part of a religious group, attending weekly services and

praying daily. It’s not just here in America—they got the same results for most of the rest of the world. • When it comes to politics both the baby boomers (born 1946 to 1964) and the Silent Generation (late 1920s to 1945) are more conservative, with the Silents more staunchly conservative than the boomers. • Although more seniors are becoming technologically savvy, seniors are still 42 percent behind other age groups in the percentage of us who have cellphones or roam the Internet. Half of us say we need help setting up new devices, which is where more training classes at senior centers would come in handy. • Those over the age of 50 are divorcing at a rate that has doubled during the past 30 years. CBD (Cannabidiol) is a natural medicinal substance found in cannabis, very similar to how lycopene is a natural medicinal substance found in many vegetables. Cannabis is a general term for certain plants that contain cannabinoids such as THC and CBD. Typically, plants with high levels of THC are considered marijuana. Plants with high levels of CBD in absence of THC are considered hemp, and this is where most CBD products are derived from. CBD is unique compared to THC because its beneficial properties that help reduce pain and inflammation don’t accompany drowsiness or disorientation. This means it’s an excellent option for anyone looking for benefits during the day or while working. Additionally, in Arizona, to be able to use a medical marijuana product for relief, a patient needs to have
a medical marijuana card and a qualifying condition. Using CBD products, however, does not require a medical marijuana card, or for a person to have any specific qualifying condition. This means CBD can be used for general anti-inflammatory properties and anxiety-calming effects, in addition to pain relief, spasm relief and antioxidant benefit. CBD is considered extremely low risk for any undesirable effects, which is why it is legal over the counter. Many people are surprised when they learn that our body produces compounds that resemble plant cannabinoids (like CBD) naturally. There is a lot of research still being performed on the properties and practical applications of CBD. Using CBD can range in form from taking infused edibles, to applying a topical CBD-rich ointment for aches, to using an herbal extract (tincture), and even using suppositories for certain gastro-intestinal concerns...all with an extremely low risk of side effects. Big events that occurred during the month of May
May 13, 1981 Pope John Paul II is shot and wounded at St. Peter’s Square in Rome by Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca. He claimed that he had planned to go to England to kill the king, but couldn’t because there was only a queen and “Turks don’t shoot women.” May 14, 1973 Skylab, America’s first space station, is launched into orbit around the Earth. Eleven days later, U.S. astronauts rendezvoused with Skylab, repairing a jammed solar panel and conducting scientific experiments during their 28-day stay. May 16, 1849 The New York City Board of Health finally establishes a hospital to deal with a cholera epidemic that would kill more than 5,000 people. The city was ripe for an epidemic because of poor health conditions and its attraction for immigrants from around the world. May 17, 1885 The Apache chief Geronimo again breaks out of an Arizona reservation, fleeing with 42 men and 92 women and children, and sparking panic among Arizona settlers.
Geronimo surrendered in September 1886. May 18, 1593 An arrest warrant is issued for Christopher Marlowe after fellow writer Thomas Kyd accuses him of heresy. Kyd had been arrested because of heretical
documents found in his room, but he claimed they belonged to Marlowe, his former roommate. May 19, 1588 The Spanish Armada sets sail from Lisbon on a mission to secure control of the English Channel and transport a Spanish invasion army to Britain from the Netherlands. The Invincible Armada consisted of 130 ships and carried 2,500 guns and 30,000 men.
May 23, 1934 The notorious criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are shot to death by Texas and Louisiana state police while driving a stolen car near Sailes, Louisiana. May 25, 1977 The first of George Lucas’ blockbuster Star Wars movies hits American theaters. The franchise would eventually earn a gross of close to $800 million worldwide in ticket sales!

MEMORIAL DAY Technically, summer doesn’t start until June 21. But many people consider Memorial Day to be the unofficial start of the season. This year, we celebrate the holiday on May 27. Many families will heat up the grill, head to the beach or take in a big blockbuster movie. But Memorial Day has the word “memorial” in it for a reason. The holiday got started on May 30, 1868, when Union General John A. Logan declared the day an occasion to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Twenty years later, the name was changed to Memorial Day. On May 11, 1950, Congress passed a resolution requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. President Richard M. Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday of May. It is an occasion to honor the men and women who died in all wars. Remembering Those Who Served It is customary to mark Memorial Day by visiting graveyards and war monuments. One of the biggest Memorial Day traditions is for the President or Vice President to give a speech and lay a wreath on soldiers’ graves in the largest national cemetery, Arlington National Cemetery, in Virginia. Most communities have local Memorial Day celebrations.

Laugh Humor is the best way to feel better fast. Laughter reduces cortisol while increasing endorphin production.
