Practical tips for reducing the clutter in your head
A simple life has a different meaning and value for every person. For some, it means eliminating all but the essential. For others, it means freeing up more time for the people you love. While you may be motivated to simplify your life, the road to simplicity isn’t always simple. Keep yourself healthy in the hot days ahead
Summer can be hot, sticky and downright uncomfortable. It can also be dangerous if you are not prepared. Cope with the heat this summer and stay healthy and safe with these helpful tips. Maintain your air conditioner The last thing you need is a broken air conditioner on a hot day. Regular maintenance of your unit can help ensure it will work all summer long. The easiest maintenance task you can perform yourself is to clean or change the filter routinely. Dress appropriately During the summer, lightweight, light-colored, loosefitting clothing can make all the difference to your comfort. The less fabric you have actually touching your body, the cooler you will be.
Always wear sunscreen Avoid sunburns by always wearing sunscreen. While there are varying opinions on the ideal strength to use, it’s important to make sure you and your loved ones have it on at the pool, taking a walk, gardening or playing outside. Schedule activities carefully During periods of intense heat, stay indoors and remain in an air-conditioned location (if possible). Limit your outdoor activities to morning and evening hours when it’s cooler. Stay hydrated Summer fun often means being outdoors, but listen to your body and take breaks to rest, rehydrate and cool off. Bring water or a sports drink when you are exercising, at the pool or even just running errands. Watch for warning signs After spending time in the heat, if your or anyone in your family becomes irritated, quiet, confused, listless, tired or throws up, seek medical attention immediately. Dehydration can shut the body down if not addressed in a timely manner.

RETIREMENT CHANGES EVERYTHING Steps to simplify your financial life
You work and work all those years, aiming for a good retirement when you can kick back and relax. For too many of us, though, retirement turns out to be one stress after another. Studies have come up with some alarming results: Your risk of clinical depression goes up 40 percent after retirement. The chance of being diagnosed with a medical condition rises 60 percent. It makes sense that retirement is high on the list of life’s worst stresses. Retirement changes everything and not just from a financial standpoint. Without work, going to the same place every day and having a routine to follow becomes much more difficult. As a result, boredom can set in, and anxiety can climb
as our former work-identity is left behind. Finances might not go the way they were planned, especially if retirement isn’t voluntary and is brought on by downsizing. You may end up with too many hours in the day, or maybe not enough hours if you try to cram too many things into your schedule. If your social life was tied to work, leaving the workplace can leave you feeling isolated. Before you retire, give it a trial run to prepare yourself for the inevitable stresses. For six months, spend only the money you will have during retirement, so you can see what it will be like. Join a group or two so those social connections will be in place with new acquaintances and friends. Stay physically and mentally active. Volunteer somewhere if you can fit it in while you’re still working. Aim for a healthier lifestyle with diet and exercise. Make a plan for everyday things you’ll do in retirement, even though you’re still working. Catching a vision for what things will be like can help you transition.

Are you traveling internationally this summer or fall? Have you sent for your passport already? That’s one step that you can’t leave until the last minute. The website for U.S. Passports and International Travel [travel. state.gov] indicates that it can take 6-8 weeks to get your passport after it receives your application. Expedited service (2-3 weeks) is available at many post offices, but it costs an extra $60. If you already have a passport, check its expiration date and be sure it has at least a few blank pages. If you need one even faster, you’ll need to visit a passport office. Keep the travel.state.gov link handy because it has a status-check feature and phone numbers to call for information or for applying.

If you need help while you’re away, click on “Emergency Assistance” to find the embassy or consulate closest to you.
