Grandparents play an important role in caring for family members. Here are some ways you can help keep babies and moms safe and healthy. Helping babies sleep safely “Researchers have learned a lot in the past 20 years and grandparents may not know that the recommendations for safe infant sleep have changed since they had young children,” said Dr. Catherine Y. Spong. To help your grandbaby sleep safely, make sure you: • Always place babies on their back to sleep. • Use a firm sleep surface. • Keep blankets, crib bumpers, and toys out of the sleep area. • Do not smoke or allow anyone to smoke around your grandbaby.
Supporting moms and moms-to-be In all the excitement over a new baby, sometimes a mother’s health, including her mental health, can be overlooked. Mood changes and other symptoms of depression can take place anytime during pregnancy, not just after the baby is born. “New mothers may be hesitant to admit they’re feeling depressed or anxious, but supportive family members can make all the difference to help identify symptoms and encourage moms to reach out for help,” said Dr. Spong. Some of the signs of depression and anxiety related to pregnancy and birth include: • Extreme moodiness. • Easily distracted and having trouble completing tasks. • Show little interest in things she used to enjoy. • Have trouble sleeping. • Have difficulty caring for herself or the baby. If you notice any of these signs in a new mom, encourage her to talk with a health care provider—or offer to make an appointment for her. The uplifting truth about end of-life-care
When a loved one is critically ill, hearing it’s time for hospice care can be devastating. With the emotions of coping with a terminal illness, you may be unsure what hospice care really is. Toni Norman, senior director of hospice operations for Brookdale Senior Living, knows hospice can be a deeply rewarding time of great comfort for patients and their families. “Hospice care is not about waiting for someone to die,” Norman says. “The goal of hospice is to provide to a patient with a life-limiting illness the physical comfort
and medical care they need to stay in their home for as long as possible, while at the same time supporting their caregivers.” Norman offers the truth behind some common misconceptions around hospice care: Myth 1: Hospice is for the last few weeks of life The hospice Medicare benefit is for the last six months. Norman says. “People who enter hospice often live longer, and with a better quality of life, than patients who do not go into hospice.” Myth 2: Hospice means giving up Hospice is actually a commitment to a high level of care for a loved one. “It means making them as comfortable as possible so they may enjoy time with their loved ones,” Norman says. Myth 3: Patients are heavily medicated Patients receive medication under strict physician guidelines, and caregivers closely monitor comfort care protocols so each patient’s pain and symptoms are uniquely managed.

Myth 4: Hospice care ends when a patient dies Hospice team members continue their support to family and caregivers for 13 months after the patient passes away. Easy ways to keep your eyes (and body) healthy
As you grab those sunglasses this summer, it’s a good time to think about things that can improve your vision throughout the year. Here are five things you can do to impact the health of your eyes: Get an eye exam An annual trip to the eye doctor is critical to ensure healthy and sharp vision. But did you know your visit to the optometrist is important to your overall health, too? A routine eye exam can detect signs of diseases like diabetes, high cholesterol, and more. Because many symptoms of health conditions often don’t appear until damage has occurred, eye exams are a powerful, preventative health tool to keep tabs on what’s happening in your body.
Eat an eye-healthy diet You probably know carrots are good for your eyes, but so are dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale and collard greens. Maintain a healthy weight Weight is a contributing factor for your overall health, including your eyes. Obesity and diabetes can lead to vision problems, like cataracts. By eating healthy portions and exercising regularly, you can reduce your risk. Protect eyes from blue light Much of our days are spent with our faces glued to smartphones, computers and televisions. A fun and delicious kitchen project
If your grandchildren are visiting, and want to help you cook in the kitchen, think about making pizza for dessert together. Here’s a guilt-free, ridiculously simple and naturally sweet “pizza style” version of everyone’s favorite locally grown foods—tasty watermelon and lots of berries. There are a few things in common with the pizza idea...well, actually only two. The dessert presentation is round, and it has lots of tempting healthy, fresh toppings. WATERMELON AND BERRY PIZZA Ingredients • 12 strawberries halved • 6 mint leaves chopped • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar • 1/2 cup blueberries • 1 large watermelon slice (1 inch or more thick), 10 inches in diameter • 6 ounces natural lemon-flavored yogurt, or 3 ounces creme fraiche
Instructions 1. In a small bowl, drizzle balsamic vinegar over the strawberries, and stir. Set aside. 2. Let your junior chef wash and dry the whole watermelon. An adult should slice a 10-inch round at the center portion and set on a serving plate. (If your watermelon is smaller or larger, cut the widest portion for this dessert and adjust quantities.) 3. Evenly cut the slice into sixths. Push the cut triangles tightly together on the plate. 4. Ask your grandchild to spread the yogurt or creme fraiche over the round. 5. Spoon the strawberries and blueberries over the yogurt. Serve slices on a dessert plate.

August 10, 1977 Postal employee David Berkowitz is arrested and charged with being the the serial killer who terrorized New York City. Berkowitz claimed demons and a neighbor’s black Labrador had ordered him to commit the killings.

August 13, 1878 A restaurant owner dies of yellow fever in Memphis, Tennessee, after a man who had escaped a quarantined steamboat visited her restaurant. In the 19th century, it was not known that mosquitoes carried yellow fever, and victims were quarantined to try to prevent its spread. August 16, 1977 Elvis Presley dies in Memphis, Tennessee.
