Q: I’ve been letting my dog out in the backyard for years to do his business. Lately, my new next-door neighbor has been complaining about the smell coming from my backyard. I haven’t noticed anything; I think he just doesn’t like my dog. Now he’s threatening to call the city. What can I do? A: It’s true that in warm weather, the smell of fresh dog poop carries a long way. If your neighbor is trying to enjoy a nice morning in his backyard at the same time your dog does his business, the two are bound to cross aromatic paths. Try to get more details on when he notices the smell. Would it be possible to compromise by letting your dog out an hour earlier in the morning or later at night? Also, ask yourself if you’re picking up after your dog adequately. If not, waste can quickly litter your backyard, so stay on top of it!

TIP 1 Fasten all buttons, snaps, fasteners and zippers on your clothes before washing and drying. It will help them keep their shape. Turn socks insides out, too. It will help prevent them from getting fuzzballs. TIP 2 If you are training a puppy or your fur baby has an accident on the carpet, here’s how to prevent a reoccurrence in the same spot: Blot up urine, then saturate the spot with club soda. Allow it to sit for five minutes, then blot with paper towels! TIP 3 Before you discard an item, look to see if any part can be reused. Wire from a broom can now be used to hang a picture on the wall. Also, remove any reusable screws or nails from items you toss and put them in plastic jars. Q: I have a collection of books and would like to know how much they’re worth. I’m enclosing a list. A: I get dozens of book questions each month, and my answer is generally the same. One of the easiest ways to find current prices is to visit www.abe. com. Type in the title and author of each book, and in most cases other copies being offered for sale will appear on your screen. Copyright dates and condition are both extremely important when making comparisons. Q: I have a high-fi tape of President Kennedy’s funeral. The tape also has a dance recital and “Santa, 1962.” How much do you think the tape is worth? A: Your tape probably is a home recording, and as such its value would be minimal. I do not think it would be of interest to collectors. For a second opinion, however, contact antique dealers in your area.

If there’s one important thing to remember about summer and seniors, it’s that we don’t always know when we’re becoming overheated. Many of us don’t sweat, our circulation is often compromised, and medical conditions (as well as the drugs we take for them) can mask the dangers of heat.

Dehydration and hypothermia (heat stroke) can afflict us before we’re aware that it’s happening, and that can be deadly. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and cool this summer: • Stay in the air conditioning as much as possible. Air conditioning can give you a chill, but it’s better to drape a sweater across your shoulders in an airconditioned room than be out in the heat. If your home isn’t cooled, make it a point to go to an air-conditioned space during the heat of the day. Try the library, movie theater, indoor mall or senior center. Perhaps you can choose a different one every afternoon of the week. Call the local aging agency to ask about cooling stations. • Do outdoor errands before 10:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. • Find out if the local senior center or fire department will be handing out free fans this year. Don’t wait until the fans are all gone. • Drink enough liquids, and this means water. Avoid caffeine, which is dehydrating. Try fresh fruit or unsweetened popsicles. To be sure you get enough water, drink by the clock: at least a few swallows every 15 minutes. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Keep a water bottle next to your TV chair or on the counter so you’ll see it. • If you don’t have air conditioning, ask your doctor if you’re taking any drugs that are affected by high heat. • Wear light, loose clothing, like cotton, and take off your hat when you’re indoors. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing.
