KEEPING YOUR COOL THIS SUMMER Practical tips for safely managing the heat
If there’s one important thing to remember about summer and seniors, it’s that we don’t always know when we’re becoming overheated. Many of us don’t sweat, our circulation is often compromised, and medical conditions (as well as the drugs we take for them) can mask the dangers of heat. Dehydration and hypothermia (heat stroke) can afflict us before we’re aware that it’s happening, and that can be deadly. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and cool this summer: • Stay in the air conditioning as much as possible. Air conditioning can give you a chill, but it’s better to drape a sweater across your shoulders in an airconditioned room than be out in the heat. If your home isn’t cooled, make it a point to go to an air-conditioned space during the heat of the day. Try the library, movie theater, indoor mall or senior center. Perhaps you can choose a different one every afternoon of the week. Call the local aging agency to ask about cooling stations. • Do outdoor errands before 10:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. • Find out if the local senior center or fire department will be handing out free fans this year. Don’t wait until the fans are all gone. • Drink enough liquids, and this means water. Avoid caffeine, which is dehydrating. Try fresh fruit or unsweetened popsicles. To be sure you get enough water, drink by the clock: at least a few swallows every 15 minutes. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Keep a water bottle next to your TV chair or on the counter so you’ll see it. • If you don’t have air conditioning, ask your doctor if you’re taking any drugs that are affected by high heat. • Wear light, loose clothing, like cotton, and take off your hat when you’re indoors. Slushy Margarita Shots • 6 oz. Tequila • 2 Limes, juiced • 2 tbsp. Agave nectar • 1 cup of ice, chopped in the blender • 1 Lime wedge • Salt, for rimming glasses • Chopped strawberries, pineapple, blackberries and raspberries for shots

In a blender, blend tequila, lime juice, agave nectar and ice. Run a lime wedge along the tip of the shot glasses and dip in salt to rim glasses. Fill shot glasses with chopped fruit and pour tequila over mixture. Layered Lemonade Drops • 6 oz. Vodka • 1 cup Mango lemonade • 1 cup Pink lemonade blended with ½ cup of strawberries and 1 cup regular lemonade • 1 cup ice Fill blender with 1/3 of vodka and mango lemonade and ice. Blend and set aside. Repeat 2 more times, first with strawberry/pink lemonade then regular lemonade. Chill each mixture, and keep each layer chilled until ready to pour in glass. Pour into serving glass in layers starting with mango mix, then strawberry/pink lemonade mix, and lastly regular lemonade. Shark Bite • 1.5 oz. Coconut rum • 3 oz. Pineapple juice • Splash Blue Curaçao In a cocktail shaker with ice, pour coconut rum, pineapple juice, and a splash of blue curaçao. Shake for 15-20 seconds until well chilled. TIP 2 If you are training a puppy or your fur baby has an accident on the carpet, here’s how to prevent a reoccurrence in the same spot: Blot up urine, then saturate the spot with club soda. George Alaimo moved to the U.S. from Sicily in the 1970s, and has been in the restaurant business ever since. “I remember walking past a pizza place when I was 12 years old, watching people throw pizza dough in the air, and thinking, ‘I want to do that.’ When I was 13, I went into that same pizza place and asked for a job, and soon was washing dishes. Making pizza is an art. I had to work my way up to that.” In addition to the many sandwiches and pizzas made at Little Sicily, the menu boasts authentic Italian pasta dishes and appetizers, as well as delicious desserts.
“The Cannoli is homemade and the Tiramisu is brought in fresh from Chicago,” says Alaimo. Among the other unique services available at Little Sicily, is BYOB (Bring your favorite wine and beer). Conquer the packing chaos
Whether it’s business travel, a family road trip or a romantic getaway, travel is an opportunity for new experiences. While you may be counting down the days to your next trip, you may also dread the idea of packing. Fear not. Here are some tips to make packing easier: 1. Make packing lists This helps eliminate the last minute panic of throwing things in the suitcase because you have forgotten what you packed. Print it out a week ahead of time so you have time to adjust the list and consider what you’ll really need. If you’re traveling with the family, every family member needs his or her own list. 2. Multipurpose clothing Check the weather for your destination so you pack appropriately for the forecast. Choose items that can serve more than one purpose. Also, pack one extra outfit, just in case the weather goes awry. 3. Pack toiletries strategically Only bring travel sized toiletries and then leave them behind to open up luggage space for mementos. To avoid spills and explosions, place toiletries in plastic bags. 4. Prevent wrinkling For delicate items, try wrapping them around soft, bulky items. For example, wrap a blouse or cotton pants around a sweatshirt. Use a rolling method to save space and cut down on wrinkles. 5. Utilize odd-shaped items Shoes take up a ton of luggage space, so select the fewest pairs you’ll need and wear the bulkiest ones while traveling. Place shoes along the sides or bottom to strengthen the bag and then stash items inside (like socks, nylons and deodorant) to maximize space. 6. Q: I’ve been letting my dog out in the backyard for years to do his business. Lately, my new next-door neighbor has been complaining about the smell coming from my backyard. I haven’t noticed anything; I think he just doesn’t like my dog. Now he’s threatening to call the city. What can I do? A: It’s true that in warm weather, the smell of fresh dog poop carries a long way. If your neighbor is trying to enjoy a nice morning in his backyard at the same time your dog does his business, the two are bound to cross aromatic paths. Try to get more details on when he notices the smell. Would it be possible to compromise by letting your dog out an hour earlier in the morning or later at night? Also, ask yourself if you’re picking up after your dog adequately. If not, waste can quickly litter your backyard, so stay on top of it!
