Surprise! It’s still summer. While you maybe fatigued by the heat here in the northwest valley, I encourage you to take time this month to head to the movies to cool off. One film that recently made an impression on me was “Dunkirk.” The visual reminder of the sacrifice so many made for our freedoms still leaves me breathless.

Q: I have a vase that is marked “Abington USA” and was given to my mother during the 1940s. Can you tell me anything about this company? A: According to U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain and Clay by Lois Lehner (Collector Books, $24.95), the company opened in Abington, Illinois, in 1908. It originally manufactured plumbing fixtures, but added a line of vases, cookie jars and other decorative pieces during the 1930s. In 1950, the art-pottery kiln was destroyed by fire. Prices vary so contact a good appraiser to determine your vase’s worth. Q: I have two Pez dispensers that I’m curious about. One is of Casper the Friendly Ghost and the second is Bambi. A: According to Warman’s Pez by Shawn Peterson, Casper is valued in the $150 to $175 range. Bambi is valued in the $59 to $75 range.

Q: I work downtown most of the week and only get one day to work at home and be around my dog. A dog walker takes her out near when I’m not there, but I worry about her being alone at home. Is there a way I can monitor her while I’m out, or even talk to her? A: If you have a home security system with cameras, you can aim a camera at your dog’s favorite hangout spot to see what she’s doing all day. Products like Pet Cube will also let you speak to her and even deliver treats through a phone app. PlayDate allows you to remotely control a ball through an app. Activity trackers for pets similar to a Fitbit or other smart watches worn on your dog’s collar can track her movements and activity levels, so you can ensure she’s getting enough exercise. While none of these are a good substitute for quality face time with your dog, they can at least bring you some peace of mind.
