It’s finally here – October, the time for cooler weather, planting gardens, kids playing outside, costumes, candy and continued opportunities to live and enjoy every moment of life we have here in Arizona. I have to admit, October is one of my favorite months because it’s an opportunity to embrace change—starting with the change in seasons. This allows us to also embrace a new attitude towards life. (Have you noticed how people are finally smiling when they’re outside?) For the last several years, October has marked the beginning of some new adventures in my own life; I’ve gained new friends and experiences, wrestled with loss and grief, all of which led me to grow in ways I could not have imagined. The theme of this month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is grit. For me, grit represents the ability to move forward when, frankly, you’re
at a loss on how to take that next step forward. I’m convinced that each of us has experienced a moment in life when moving forward seems impossible. Many experts now believe that a person’s emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) may be more important than their IQ, and plays a larger role in the achievement of success, the quality of relationships, and overall happiness. EQ is the ability to understand our own and the emotions and reactions of others. Without this ability, you’re lost before you’ve started.

It’s possible to develop your mental toughness by keeping your attention on your long-term goals and not getting side-tracked by temporary setbacks. An unwavering focus helps you to keep perspective in the face of sudden setbacks. Don’t let short-term profits, negative feedback, or a hectic schedule prevent you from taking the next step towards your goal.

Mentally tough people are more consistent than others. They don’t miss deadlines, appointments or meetings. Part of mental toughness is a commitment to always show up, to always deliver and to not get side-tracked, to always finish what’s been started.
Knowing how to handle failure is an important aspect of being mentally strong. Michael Jordan said: “In my career I’ve missed over 9,000 shots, lost almost 300 games, 26 times I’ve been trusted to make the gamewinning shot and I missed. I failed over and over again in my life and that’s why I succeed – I can accept failure.”
6. An optimistic mind-set
People who are mentally tough tend to be optimistic because they have confidence in their ability and they believe in their vision. It’s also an optimistic attitude that sees one through tough times and challenges. It is the hope created by a positive mind-set that keeps many people going long after others have given up.

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER Raise mentally strong kids
Developing mental strength is an important skill all kids need to learn in order to thrive in adulthood. Unfortunately, building mental strength is a skill that can only be learned by living life. As you spend time with your child, talk about strategies to become mentally stronger and make a conscious effort to turn mistakes and problems into teachable moments.
You may be thinking, “How do I teach my kids how to be mentally strong?” The following tips are a great start.
1. Make it a family priority to take care of your mind.
Most parents talk to kids about the importance of caring for their bodies. But few parents talk about the importance of caring for their minds. Teach your kids about the benefits of meditation or prayer.
2. Talk about feelings.
Studies show 60 percent of college students say they were prepared academically but not emotionally for college. The vast majority of these young adults say they wished their parents had invested more time in teaching them how to deal with uncomfortable feelings. Incorporate feeling words into your conversations. Help your children identify how they’re feeling. Talk about how those emotions can affect
their decisions and teach them to manage their emotions in a healthy way.
3. Teach your child to think realistically.
When your child expresses selfdoubt, excessive self-blame, catastrophic predictions, or exaggerated negative thoughts, teach him how to think differently. Show him how to recognize unhelpful thoughts and reframe them in a more realistic way.
4. Role model how to take positive action.
Kids need to know that they can behave contrary to their feelings. In fact, their behavior can change their feelings. If your child has had a bad day at school, she can choose to do something when she gets home that will help her feel better.
5. Actively engage in problem-solving.
It can be tempting to swoop in and solve kids’ problems for them. But they need opportunities to practice building problemsolving skills. Resist the urge to bail your child out when he encounters a problem. Instead, encourage him to develop his own solution. Let him make mistakes sometimes. Natural consequences can be some of life’s greatest teachers.

By Harvey Powers, Ph.D. Does what doesn’t kill you; make you stronger? Now that’s an interesting question in the context of relationships, don’t you think? Of course, we all have received and given relational insults causing pain, mostly unintentionally. Ernest Hemmingway’s quote from Farewell to Arms that our opening question is based on reads: “The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places.” Interestingly, in context, Hemmingway’s point is that if we do not allow ourselves to bend enough to be broken, life will kill us. Here are some thoughts applying this wisdom to relationships.
Rigidity in relationships Choose to become bitter can be deadly. or better? We all know trying to force change in our partner will not work. Forcing results in an immovable object meeting an irresistible force. Shifting must be voluntary. Try these tips instead: • Consider developing the art of bending or compromise. • Choose regularly to spontaneously give a little rather than stand your ground. • Soften your heart, because hardened hearts shatter.
The choice is always there. When we let hurt metastasize into bitterness it creates relational toxicity. Someone once said, “Bitterness is like drinking poison and expecting someone else to die.” Use these strategies instead: • Don’t deny relational hurts, but don’t wallow in them. • Keep short accounts and forgive easily. • Ask yourself: What do “I” need to learn from this?

Attitude matters. We all create a narrative in our head about relational wounds. It’s the story we tell ourselves. These stories construct a mindset or vibe we put out. Attitudes also become filters limiting what we see. Try the following: • Eavesdrop on your internal narrative about your partner. Ask, “What’s an alternate and generous story I can tell myself about my partner?” • Cultivate the attitude of looking for the best in your partner, not the worst. • Surround yourself with those who tell stories about the “best” in their spouses. Remember, a great marriage doesn’t happen when the “perfect couple” gets together. It happens when an imperfect couple gets together and learns to enjoy each other’s differences. October 2018

CHANGE BATTERIES This is the perfect time to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Halloween Muddy Buddies
Rice Krispie Treat Mummies
Looking for an easy Halloween treat? This muddy buddies recipe is great for a Halloween party or spooky movie night!
A super easy treat the kids will love.
Ingredients 9 cups Rice Chex cereal 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips ½ cup peanut butter ¼ cup butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 ½ cups powdered sugar 1 cup Kit Kats cut into small pieces ½ cup candy corn Hershey’s fun size candy skulls sprinkles edible eyeballs
Ingredients 6 snack-size rice krispie treats 3 cups white chocolate chips black edible piping gel or icing (found near cake decorating supplies)
Instructions 1. In a large bowl, microwave chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter for 1 minute; stir. Return to microwave for 30 seconds or until mixture is smooth. 2. Stir in vanilla extract. 3. Combine chocolate mixture with Chex cereal. Stir until evenly coated. 4. Combine cereal and powdered sugar; mix until well coated. 5. Add candy, sprinkles and eyeballs. 6. Instructions 1. Unwrap rice krispie treats and set aside. Place white chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave on half power for 2 minutes. Stir and return to microwave for 20 seconds at a time (still on half power) stirring after each until chocolate is completely melted and smooth. 2. Dip rice krispie treats in the chocolate being sure to coat the front and sides (the back side can remain uncovered). Place uncovered-sidedown on a foil-lined plate or small baking sheet. 3. Repeat process with remaining rice krispie treats. Transfer plate/baking sheet to fridge or freezer to cool for 2-3 minutes. 4. While treats are cooling, spoon melted white chocolate into a small zip lock bag. Remove treats from fridge/freezer. Use scissors to snip off a tiny bit of one bottom corner of the chocolate-filled bag, then drizzle chocolate in a random pattern over the treats to create the look of mummy wrapping. Return treats to fridge or freezer for 1-2 minutes. 5. Pipe two dots onto each rice krispie treat to create mummy eyes. (Optional step, dip a Q-tip in red food coloring and dap two dots onto the rice krispie treats before adding the eyes to create a creepy “bloodshot” look.) Serve or store in airtight container up to 1 week. October 2018

Take a hope break
Schedule five minute “hope breaks” into your normal routine. Find a quiet place, take five to 10 deep breaths and think about good things happening, instead of the worst-case scenario. Make an affirmation and speak it out loud. Repeat as often as needed.
Take action
Set goals and move forward, focusing on results. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your progress.
Volunteer
Spread hope to your community by giving time, food and money to those in need. Whether you clean up a local park, read to children in schools or volunteer in a food pantry, you’ll be spreading hope to those who need it.
