HANUKKAH TRADITIONS
The Hanukkah celebration revolves around the kindling of a nine-branched menorah, known in Hebrew as the hanukiah. On each of the holiday’s eight nights, another candle is added to the menorah after sundown; the ninth candle, called the shamash (“helper”), is used to light the others. Jews typically recite blessings during this ritual and display the menorah prominently in a window as a reminder to others of the miracle that inspired the holiday. In another allusion to the Hanukkah miracle, traditional Hanukkah foods are fried in oil. Potato pancakes (known as latkes) and jam-filled donuts (sufganiyot) are particularly popular in many Jewish households. Other Hanukkah customs include playing with four-sided spinning tops called dreidels and exchanging gifts. In recent decades, particularly in North America, Hanukkah has exploded into a major commercial phenomenon, largely because it falls near or overlaps with Christmas.

Traditions are a family’s way to pass down important events and memories associated with a specific holiday. The greatest thing about traditions is they can be started at any given point, and can be used to help your family cultivate a deep bond, or can signal to a new friends, that they are indeed a part of your family traditions.
Consider using the following ideas to cultivate your family’s Christmas traditions: 1. Instead of a snow ball fight have a flour fight. Turn some Christmas music on, go outside, and get messy! 2. Get a few bottles of shaving cream and have each member of the family make a Santa beard on their face.
3. Wrap 25 books. Kids can open one book each night leading up to Christmas. 4. Hide the last presents on Christmas day and make clues as to where your kids can find them. 5. Give matching Christmas pajamas for the whole family on Christmas Eve. 6. Make reindeer food out of dried oats and glitter and have the kids sprinkle it in the backyard on Christmas Eve.
7. Watch Polar Express and drink hot chocolate every Christmas Eve. 8. Take your kids shopping for a toy to donate during the Christmas season. 9. Write a letter to your kids and put it in a clear plastic, fillable ornament ball .
10. Have a camp out one night under the Christmas tree.
11. Booby trap the children’s bedroom doors by creating a web of green and red streamers the kids have to break through on Christmas morning.
12. Photocopy your children’s letters to Santa each year and make a book out of them when they are older. 13. Make a red and green paper gratitude chain. Each night leading up to Christmas, each person writes what they are grateful for and adds it to the chain.

Particularly for deep-rooted injuries, meaningful forgiveness can take years to achieve. But we can always begin the process of forgiveness and deal with the resurgences of anger as they arise.
Forgiveness doesn’t mean you have to like the person

PEPPERMINT JOY INGREDIENTS 1 box chocolate cake mix 1 tsp. baking powder 2 large eggs 1/2 c. canola oil 14 York Peppermint Pattie Minis Sprinkles, for decorating
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350° and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl, whisk together cake mix and baking powder; in another bowl, whisk together eggs and oil. Add wet ingredients to dry and stir until fully combined. 2. Using your hands, form small balls of dough. Flatten a ball, then place a Peppermint Patty in the center and fold dough over to completely cover. Transfer to baking sheet and repeat with remaining dough (you should have enough for about 14 cookies). 3. Top with sprinkles and bake until cooked through, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool slightly on baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack to let cool completely.

INGREDIENTS 40 Oreos block cream cheese, softened 16 oz. semisweet or melting chocolate 1/3 c. Oreo cookies, crushed (or cocoa powder) DIRECTIONS 1. Using a food processor fitted with the blade attachment, grind Oreos into crumbs. Transfer crumbs to a medium bowl and add cream cheese. Use a fork to mix until well combined. 2. Using about one tablespoon of the mixture per ball, form misshapen balls of the Oreo mixture. Place them on a plate and into the fridge for about 30 minutes to 1 hour to firm up. 3. Microwave melting chocolate in 10 to 15 second increments until melted and smooth. Using a fork or toothpick, dip each Oreo ball into the melted chocolate, then set onto parchment paper. Sprinkle immediately with crushed Oreos, if using, or let dry completely. 4. If using cocoa powder, once firm, dip your fingers into the cocoa and lightly rub onto Oreo balls to complete the “coal” look. Store balls in the fridge until ready to serve.

INGREDIENTS 1 tube chocolate chip cookie dough 1 c. semisweet chocolate chips 2 tbsp. coconut oil (or butter) 1 part Baileys Irish Cream 1 part milk DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease the cups of a muffin tin, then fill each one with a small ball of cookie dough, pressing down gently to form a well. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly golden. 2. As soon as they’re out, use a shot glass to gently press down the center of each cookie. Set tray aside to cool for at least 20 minutes. 3. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave in 25-second intervals, stirring in between, until chips are fully melted. Line each cookie dough cup with the melted chocolate, place on a baking sheet or platter, and refrigerate until the chocolate has hardened, about 15 minutes. 4. In a shaker filled with ice, combine equal parts Baileys Irish Cream and milk. Shake, then pour into each cookie shot glass.

INGREDIENTS 3/4 c. cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 1/2 c. sugar 1/2 c. brown sugar 1 large egg 2 tsp. vanilla 2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. kosher salt 1/3 c. crushed potato chips 1/3 c. crushed pretzels 1/3 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips 3 tbsp. red and green sprinkles Flaky sea salt, for garnish DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350º and line two cookie sheets with parchment. 1. Cream together butter and sugars until light and fluffy, 3 to 4 minutes. 2. Mix in egg and vanilla. 3. In another large bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt. Add dry ingredients to wet and mix until smooth. Dough will be thick. 4. Gently stir in chips, pretzels, chocolate chips, and sprinkles. 5. Make tablespoon size balls of dough. Slightly press them down onto the cookie sheet and sprinkle with sea salt. 6. Bake until edges are just starting to get golden, 7 to 8 minutes. 7. Remove from oven and let cool 2 to 3 minutes, then transfer to cooling rack to cool completely.
INGREDIENTS FOR THE COOKIES 1 c. sugar 1/2 c. salted butter, softened 1 large egg, at room temperature 1/2 c. milk, at room temperature 1 1/4 tsp. baking powder 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour 1/4 c. cocoa FOR THE PEPPERMINT FROSTING 1 c. unsalted butter 4 c. powdered sugar 1/4 tsp. pure vanilla extract 1 1/4 tsp. peppermint extract 2 tbsp. water pinch of kosher salt Red gel icing color 12 mini candy canes, crushed DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 375º and line a cookie sheet with parchment. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat sugar and butter just until smooth. 2. Add egg and milk and mix until well combined. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk together baking powder, flour and cocoa, then add to wet ingredients and mix until combined. 4. Drop level tablespoons of cookie dough onto prepared cooking sheet. 5. Bake until edges are set and centers look mostly done, 6 to 8 minutes. Let cool on cookie sheet for 2 to 3 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack. 6. Make frosting: Beat butter until smooth. Add half the powdered sugar and mix until smooth, then add vanilla and peppermint extracts, 2 tablespoons water, and a pinch of salt and mix until smooth. 7. Add remaining powdered sugar and mix until smooth. (If frosting feels too thick, add 1 more tablespoon water.) Add red gel color to color frosting to your desired shade of red. 8. Assemble cookie sandwiches: Spread or pipe frosting onto one cookie, then add second cookie. 9. Place crushed candy canes on a plate and roll cookie sandwiches so candy canes stick to frosting.
