Happy Birthday America! I look forward to celebrating Independence Day with my family and friends each year. The significance of the holiday reminds me how blessed I am to live in the United States. I hope you and your family had a great 4th of July.

INSPIRED SPACES Is your back patio tired and uninspired? It’s time to stop writing your name in the dust on the table and get your space back to the retreat you want it to be. Here is the good news—it’s easy and inexpensive! Try these steps to make your patio a place you can enjoy! 1. Clean the patio furniture! Faded cushions can make your furniture look old and tired, so buy new ones! Lowe’s and Target have affordable options for most sets. 2. Add a deck box. Store all pool accessories, outdoor toys, and miscellaneous items. Adding a cushion to the top of the deck box doubles that area as additional seating for parties. Utilize baskets to store fresh pool towels. Then, add wall hooks to hang items like wet bathing suits and towels. 3. Get a mini fridge. This will keep bottled water and other beverages cool without the mess of an ice chest. Placing a small tray on the top of the mini fridge transforms that area into a serving bar. 4. Replace your outdoor rug. You can buy great woven rugs at World Market for $15-20. These rugs work to make the space cooler for feet on hot days, while also creating the feel of an outdoor living room. 5. Add sparkle. Update old ceiling fans, and string outdoor globe lights over the patio or on a fence line. This will create ambiance at night for those evenings spent outside. Fire pits and candles are another nice way to create the feeling of an outdoor retreat at night. Additionally, Tea light candles are perfect to place in rocks or sand. PRO TIP: Thrift stores and garage sales are always great places to find small tables and stands for an outdoor space. To make all of your bargain finds look cohesive, spray paint all of the pieces in one color using an outdoor spray paint like RustOleum. Simple tips to make life a little cooler Feeling a little hot under the collar lately? You’re not the only one! Summer in Arizona is guaranteed to be sweltering hot. Even though we know what to expect, try some of these great ideas when you can’t take the heat anymore.
Ice-cold drinks!
Place bottles in a container big enough to hold a number of bottles and enough ice to surround it with little room to spare. Pack ice and a cup or two of salt (rock or table salt) around the bottles and then fill the container with water. Refresh sticky sheets
On those unbearably hot nights place your pillow case and top sheet in the freezer for a few minutes before bedtime. You can also fill a hot water bottle with water and freeze it. Place it at the foot of the bed to cool your sleeping area down by several degrees instantly.
Make a cooling body spray
If you are spending an extended period of time outdoors in the summer heat be sure to carry along some liquid coolant! Carry a metal spray bottle with 1 part
aloe vera gel to 3 parts cool water to cool everyone down when the temperatures soar. Aloe cools skin by 5 degrees on contact, plus penetrates the skin deeper than water to prolong the cooling sensation.
Reduce your body temperature
Blood runs close to the surface of the skin in your wrists, so running cold water on them is very effective – as the cool blood will then travel around your body! This is a great way to cool down if you’re at a wedding, or an event where you don’t have much time to spare.
Make an “Ice Box Fan”
This stay-cool trick is straight out of the icebox era! Make a DIY air conditioner by positioning a shallow pan or bowl full of ice in front of a fan. The breeze will pick up cold water from the ice’s surface as it melts, creating a cooling mist.
DIY Cooling Pad
For a cold compress on really hot nights, fill a sock with rice, tie it off, and stick it in the freezer for an hour or so. The compress will stay chilly for up to 30 minutes, definitely enough time to nod off.

1. Draw something—fruit, your coffee cup, your dog, cat, children—for 5-10 minutes. Just draw, don’t judge and don’t erase.

OUTSIDE THE BOX Boost your creativity every day Creativity is not just for artists. It’s for businesspeople looking for a new way to close a sale; it’s for engineers trying to solve a problem; it’s for parents who want their children to see the world in more than one way. Creativity helps thinking be more flexible and multi-dimensional. It may also help you approach work/life challenges with less fear and more of a playful mindset. To make creativity a habit, schedule 15 minutes of creativity into your calendar and try a different idea below each day.
2. Buy a set of color pencils. Draw parallel lines freehand or with a ruler. Color them.
3. Take your sketchbook to a concert and sketch or write ideas that pop into your head as you’re listening to music.
4. Make something new, funny or weird with objects lying on your desk. 5. Collect a bunch of things from your recycling bin. Combine them together to make an abstract sculpture. Use a hot glue gun or lots of tape to hold it together.
6. Look up a word in the dictionary, and then look up the word before and after. Make up a short story using the three words.
7. Make new things with paper clips (earrings, letters of the alphabet, a heart). See how many things you can make in 5 minutes. 8. Pick a song you love and sing it with new lyrics.
9. Write a poem about your day in the style of your favorite poet (Maya Angelou for example).
10. Take a photo, or a selfie, open it in Photoshop or PowerPoint and write HELLO! in large letters in a fun font, save as PDF and attach it to your emails for the day.
11. Write something you want to solve in your notebook before you go to sleep. Sleep on your problem and let your subconscious do the work. When you wake up, record any ideas that come to mind in your notebook.
12. Look at clouds and imagine them as things, just like when you were a kid.
13. Borrow your kid’s Legos and make a sculpture for 15 minutes.
14. Cover your table completely with large easel paper. Draw on it large, free style, stream of consciousness, using a Sharpie for 10 minutes or until the whole table is covered. Tape it all together and tack it on your wall.
15. Next time you’re cooking, change a key ingredient and experiment.
16. Collect branches that look like letters on one of your hikes and write your name with them when you’re home. Take a photo and post on Instagram.
17. Take a different route home and take photographs of the new things you see along the way.
