NOTE
Happy Birthday America! I look forward to celebrating Independence Day with my family and friends each year. The significance of the holiday reminds me how blessed I am to live in the United States. I hope you and your family had a great 4th of July.
life! This month’s issue is full of great articles. Check out our “Home” article by my new friend and a Grand Season Family reader, Courtney Gregor. It’s full of great ideas on how to enhance your patio without spending a fortune. I was touched when Courtney reached out and asked how she could be a part of the magazine because it encourages her so much.
I’m finding it hard to believe that 2018 is half-way over. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for a little relaxation. Between work demands and summer sports travel schedules, I’m dreaming of spending time on a nice raft in a cool pool.
I hope you enjoy the last few weeks of summer break with your family and friends chillin’ and let me know your thoughts about the magazine. I love making new friends.
It’s probably no surprise that this month’s issue of Grand Season Family is all about taking some time to chill. I know it’s hard for me to slow down regardless of the time of the year. If I have the day off, I want to make the most of it, so I usually pack it with so many activities that I’m wiped out when the day is over. I want to encourage you for the sake of your health, and the health of your family, to take a few moments to relax and enjoy all of the blessings you have in your
Enjoy your journey!

Life is like a roller coaster, live it, be happy, enjoy life.
A cheerful frame of mind, reinforced by relaxation... is the medicine that puts all ghosts of fear on the run.
Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer.
– Karolina Kurkova
One can spend too much of one’s life locked in stuffy rooms seeking out obscure truths, searching, researching, until one is too old to enjoy life.
– Jimmy Sangster
My belief is that we were put into this world of wonders and beauty with a special ability to appreciate them, in some cases to have the fun of taking a hand in developing them, and also in being able to help other people instead of overreaching them and, through it all, to enjoy life that is, to be happy.

YOU
FIND YOURSELF 6 Ways to Rediscover Your Authentic Self Use these tips to awaken your soul:
Wake-up! What things do you love?
Quick two-question quiz. 1. What things did you love to do before marriage, kids and increasing work responsibilities, including side hustles to help pay the bills, got in the way? 2. How many of those things do you still do now? For many of us, spending time doing the things we love the most gets sidelined for responsibilities. When asked, many people say they miss spontaneity, creative projects, cranking up the music, reading and the indulgence of sleeping in. While not always doing what you want to do is just part of adulting, drifting away from what you love can erode happiness and cause you to lose sight of who you really are.
10
The Grand Season family
Author Sherianna Boyle believes focusing on the present can facilitate your own wake-up call and increase awareness. “No doubt getting married, raising children and becoming a homeowner gives us a lot of extra things to think about. When we worry, stress and overthink, it consumes our energy. Choose to focus on the now and your energy will grow,” she says. Let yourself feel your emotions and use them as guideposts.
Busy isn’t an excuse. Obligations can interfere with what’s calling to us. Jen Sincero, best-selling author, says, “When you constantly deny yourself the people, food, things and
July 2018
experiences that make you feel the most alive, that sends a pretty lousy message home.” Decide you are worth doing the things you love.
Prioritize yourself.
Are you one of those people who never focuses on yourself? Start putting yourself first and trust that doing so will make you even more fulfilled and better able to give back to others. Investing in yourself is not selfish. “We drift away from doing what we once loved because it doesn’t fit our lifestyle anymore or our partner doesn’t like it,” says Pat Pearson, a family therapist and author. She suggests asking yourself this critical question: What do I want? “If it’s important to your well-being, you shouldn’t give it up.”
Don’t delay
As writer Anne Dillard wrote, “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” While it might be comforting to promise ourselves “later” for those activities we love, the reality is we have to get them on our schedules in order for them to happen. Big life events— the death of a parent, a milestone birthday, an illness—can stir us awake and fuel our desire to pursue our passions, but without daily habits in place we often fall back into old routines.

LOVE
INVEST WISELY
Simple ways to make your love last The best thing about being in a long-term committed relationship is that you can be yourself. You don’t have to be “on” all the time. The person you’re with loves you for who you are, which leads to stability and comfort. The only problem with comfort is it’s easy to stop intentionally investing in your relationship—which can lead to unintentional distance. Take a few moments to invest in your relationship daily. Small investments will reap incredible returns in the future. Start today! Try some of these tips to get started.
Give your partner a foot or back rub that doesn’t Y lead to sex.
Y
About that warm, affectionate touching thing: enough with the back rubs with ulterior motives already! This kind of pattern means
that people begin to associate warm touch with pressure and anxiety, rather than kindness or affection. Find opportunities to squeeze, hug, rub, nuzzle, cuddle or hold your partner throughout the day in a non-sexual way.
Y Y
Split the housework.
According to a recent study, 62% of couples say that sharing the chores is “very important” for a happy relationship. The only two other factors that ranked as more important than sharing chores were faithfulness and having a happy sexual relationship. Sharing chores ranked higher in importance than sharing religious beliefs, sharing political beliefs, and making enough money.
Y Y
Get pumped about your partner’s accomplishments.
While it’s important to be there when hard things happen, it’s also important to celebrate
12
The Grand Season family
July 2018
with them when things are going great. Researchers found when you respond happily and enthusiastically to your partner’s good news, that’s a good predictor for future relationship commitment, satisfaction and love.
your partner the Y Y Give benefit of the doubt. He’s late to dinner. AGAIN. Instead of assuming that this is obviously because he doesn’t care about your time or your feelings, take a deep breath and try to think about other possible explanations. Experts recommend we put ourselves in our partner’s shoes to try to determine why they might have acted the way they did (instead of assuming the worst), as you might be prone to do.
Y Y
Schedule actual couple time.
Many couples in therapy report that they never really connect with each other anymore—they’re just always so busy with other things. It’s easy to get into autopilot and start living totally parallel lives. If that thought terrifies you, be adamant about making regular time for one another, even if it’s just 15 minutes a day.

SPLASH
H2Ohhhhhh Great places to cool off this summer! I know, you’re a pro at navigating the summer heat! But for those who are new to the Valley, we’ve compiled a list of fun water parks, splash pads and resorts in the Valley that might help you enjoy the summer heat.
Wet n’ Wild Phoenix
4243 W. Pinnacle Peak Road, Glendale, AZ 85310 Kids have a lot of options to splash and play at this waterpark. There is Monsoon Bay Wave Pool, Crazy Cactus Roaring River and the Serpentine Complex with all its water slides. Thrill rides include the Constrictor, Maximum Velocity, the Tornado and Phoenix Flyers.
Goodyear Community Splash Pad
3151 N Litchfield Rd, Goodyear, AZ 85395
The Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch
7500 E Doubletree Ranch Road, Scottsdale AZ 85258
The community park has a lot of activities besides the splash pad for cooling down in summer.
Arizona Grand Resort & Spa
8000 Arizona Grand Pkwy., Phoenix, AZ 85044 Travel Channel voted this waterpark, covering 7 acres, as one of the Top 10 Water Parks in the U.S. In addition to the water park, there are also 6 resort pools that are open daily until 10 pm, scattered like liquid turquoise throughout the resort. Experience the tropics in the Arizona desert with the Oasis Wave Pool zero depth entry makes it easy for toddlers—and kids can learn to surf on the waves. Older kids will thrill to the eight-story slides including the 225-foot free fall and 220-foot Roadrunner with a dramatic 51-foot drop! This experience requires a hotel room for admittance.
The resort has 10 pools, 20 fountains and 45 waterfalls to afford summer pleasure for its guests. There are 45 waterspouts that spray onto the pool and deck areas to keep guests cool. There’s a Grecian type Water Temple that allows guests to swim through and an aqueduct connecting 6 of the pools.

City of Glendale Aquatic Play
Heroes Regional Park, Glendale, AZ 85303 9200 N Bush Hwy, Mesa, AZ 85215 Tubing down a river is great fun. You park your car, rent your tube then climb aboard the bus and decide how far up you want to go before jumping off and into the river for your ride downstream. You will be riding the Salt River through the Tonto National Forest with beautiful scenery and can choose options from a one-hour ride to a four-hour trip. Very important is
the fact that children MUST be eight years old and four feet tall—they MUST meet both requirements otherwise the whole family won’t be able to go! You can rent tubes to fit your cooler—so you have your snacks and beverages on the river. Life jackets and vests are not available for rent but can be purchased at the snack bar. (The best advice is to bring your own).
Hole-in-the-Wall River Ranch, 7677 N. 16th St., Phoenix, AZ 85020 The resort is set in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve area and covers 27 acres, with 4 acres of pools incorporating lazy river tubing and waterslides. The 18hole miniature golf course winds around the verges of the lazy river.

Point Hilton, Squaw Peak Resort
The Heroes Park Splash Pad covers 8,500 square feet and has a number of spray nozzles, tipping buckets, geysers and more for the kids to get some cooling summer fun. There are more splash pads in the Glendale area. Check the website for additional options.

INSPIRED SPACES Is your back patio tired and uninspired? It’s time to stop writing your name in the dust on the table and get your space back to the retreat you want it to be. Here is the good news—it’s easy and inexpensive! Try these steps to make your patio a place you can enjoy! 1. Clean the patio furniture! Faded cushions can make your furniture look old and tired, so buy new ones! Lowe’s and Target have affordable options for most sets. 2. Add a deck box. Store all pool accessories, outdoor toys, and miscellaneous items. Adding a cushion to the top of the deck box doubles that area as additional seating for parties. Utilize baskets to store fresh pool towels. Then, add wall hooks to hang items like wet bathing suits and towels. 3. Get a mini fridge. This will keep bottled water and other beverages cool without the mess of an ice chest. Placing a small tray on the top of the mini fridge transforms that area into a serving bar. 4. Replace your outdoor rug. You can buy great woven rugs at World Market for $15-20. These rugs work to make the space cooler for feet on hot days, while also creating the feel of an outdoor living room. 5. Add sparkle. Update old ceiling fans, and string outdoor globe lights over the patio or on a fence line. This will create ambiance at night for those evenings spent outside. Fire pits and candles are another nice way to create the feeling of an outdoor retreat at night. Additionally, Tea light candles are perfect to place in rocks or sand. PRO TIP: Thrift stores and garage sales are always great places to find small tables and stands for an outdoor space. To make all of your bargain finds look cohesive, spray paint all of the pieces in one color using an outdoor spray paint like RustOleum. Once the paint dries, add the accent tables and stands throughout your space. Courtney Cavanaugh Gregor is a home improvement expert and a reader of The Grand Season Family. KIDS
BE HAPPY What do we want most for our kids? Well-being, close relationships—and better grades would be nice, too. Research points to a single factor that can play a role in achieving all these types of big dreams: optimism. Optimism is a practical skill that can help kids negotiate a lifetime of challenges. “Optimism is a positive feeling about the future—a confidence and faith that things will work out,” says Christine Carter, Ph.D.

Brighten your child’s outlook.
In contrast, when something goes wrong, a kid with a pessimistic mindset thinks that means everything will go wrong—and that she must have done something to make it happen. Both optimism and pessimism can become self-fulfilling prophecies. So, what if your child tends to be gloomy? The silver lining is that optimism isn’t a fixed personality trait but a teachable strategy that improves with practice. Here’s how to get started. Enlist your child’s imagination. Research has shown that people who regularly took time to write about their best possible selves—their biggest dreams and goals for their lives—felt more positive and stayed that way weeks later. Take time to talk with your child about their hopes and dreams. Start a “happy journal.” When children are evaluating the world, it is not natural to identify positive experiences. That’s why its important for parents to help their kids recognize what makes them happy. This can help foster a more positive expectation for the future. Revel in anticipation. People of all ages delight in anticipation. So find things to look forward to together. Keep a big family calendar of all the fun activities that the future holds. Keep at it. Do anything often enough and you’ll progress—whether it’s perfecting your tennis serve or bouncing back from disappointments. And if at first you don’t succeed, well, you know what to do. www.grandseasonfamily.com

BALANCE
Enjoy life more.
JUGGLE LESS
Ever feel like you’re working furiously to keep a stack of plates spinning high in the air and if you slow down for just a second, each and every one will go smashing to the ground? Some 89 percent of workers confessed in one online survey that they struggle with work/life balance. That’s the bad news. The good news is that 11 percent of workers claim to have achieved it. Join that 11 percent by trying these ideas as you try to move closer to your perfect balance.
1. Get moving When you barely have time to make dinner, finding time to exercise might seem like the opposite of balancing your juggling act. But consider this: Researchers took a look at how exercise affects our feelings about work and home life. Not only did they find that people who took time to work-out reported lower levels of stress, as well as had higher confidence in their abilities to handle work/family conflicts.
3. Plan a vacation
Americans finish every year with about 658 million paid vacation days that they didn’t use. Of those, more than 222 million are completely forfeited by employees who work for companies that don’t let them carry paid time off from one year to 2. the next. SUNBURN SOLUTIONS Home remedies for painful burns
If you have been out in the sun, and accidently overlooked a portion of your skin while applying sunscreen, try some of these suggestions to reduce the pain. 1. Place a cool compress on sunburned skin for immediate sunburn pain relief to comfort and soothe sunburn. 2. Take a cool shower to cool your sunburned skin. 3. Take a cool bath and try these therapies to soothe sunburn pain: • Add one cup of apple cider vinegar to a bath to help balance the pH (acid or alkalinity) of sunburned skin. • Soak in an oatmeal bath. This is especially helpful for itchy, sunburned skin. • Add some lavender or chamomile essential oil to the bath to help relieve some of the stinging and pain. • Add 2 cups of baking soda to the bath to help ease irritation and redness from sunburn. 4. Use lotions that contain Aloe Vera to soothe and moisturize sunburnt skin. Some aloe products contain lidocaine, an anesthetic that can help relieve sunburn pain. 5. Apply teabags soaked in cold water to sunburned eyelids to soothe the burn and reduce inflammation. 6. Apply petroleum jelly or Aquaphor ointment on sunburned lips to keep them moisturized.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

REDUCE THE HEAT
CHILL OUT
Simple tips to make life a little cooler Feeling a little hot under the collar lately? You’re not the only one! Summer in Arizona is guaranteed to be sweltering hot. Even though we know what to expect, try some of these great ideas when you can’t take the heat anymore.
Ice-cold drinks!
Place bottles in a container big enough to hold a number of bottles and enough ice to surround it with little room to spare. Pack ice and a cup or two of salt (rock or table salt) around the bottles and then fill the container with water. Salt triggers a chemical reaction that lowers the temperature of the water so drinks chill in 10-15 minutes. AC & APPLIANCE REPAIR

aloe vera gel to 3 parts cool water to cool everyone down when the temperatures soar. Aloe cools skin by 5 degrees on contact, plus penetrates the skin deeper than water to prolong the cooling sensation.
Reduce your body temperature
Blood runs close to the surface of the skin in your wrists, so running cold water on them is very effective – as the cool blood will then travel around your body! This is a great way to cool down if you’re at a wedding, or an event where you don’t have much time to spare.
Make an “Ice Box Fan”
This stay-cool trick is straight out of the icebox era! Make a DIY air conditioner by positioning a shallow pan or bowl full of ice in front of a fan. The breeze will pick up cold water from the ice’s surface as it melts, creating a cooling mist.
DIY Cooling Pad
For a cold compress on really hot nights, fill a sock with rice, tie it off, and stick it in the freezer for an hour or so. The compress will stay chilly for up to 30 minutes, definitely enough time to nod off.

1. Draw something—fruit, your coffee cup, your dog, cat, children—for 5-10 minutes. Just draw, don’t judge and don’t erase.
GROWTH
OUTSIDE THE BOX Boost your creativity every day Creativity is not just for artists. It’s for businesspeople looking for a new way to close a sale; it’s for engineers trying to solve a problem; it’s for parents who want their children to see the world in more than one way. Creativity helps thinking be more flexible and multi-dimensional. It may also help you approach work/life challenges with less fear and more of a playful mindset. To make creativity a habit, schedule 15 minutes of creativity into your calendar and try a different idea below each day.
2. Buy a set of color pencils. Draw parallel lines freehand or with a ruler. Color them.
3. Take your sketchbook to a concert and sketch or write ideas that pop into your head as you’re listening to music.
4. Make something new, funny or weird with objects lying on your desk. 5. Collect a bunch of things from your recycling bin. Combine them together to make an abstract sculpture. Use a hot glue gun or lots of tape to hold it together.
6. Look up a word in the dictionary, and then look up the word before and after. Make up a short story using the three words.
7. Make new things with paper clips (earrings, letters of the alphabet, a heart). See how many things you can make in 5 minutes. 8. Pick a song you love and sing it with new lyrics.
9. Write a poem about your day in the style of your favorite poet (Maya Angelou for example).
10. Take a photo, or a selfie, open it in Photoshop or PowerPoint and write HELLO! in large letters in a fun font, save as PDF and attach it to your emails for the day.
11. Write something you want to solve in your notebook before you go to sleep. Sleep on your problem and let your subconscious do the work. When you wake up, record any ideas that come to mind in your notebook.
12. Look at clouds and imagine them as things, just like when you were a kid.
13. Borrow your kid’s Legos and make a sculpture for 15 minutes.
14. Cover your table completely with large easel paper. Draw on it large, free style, stream of consciousness, using a Sharpie for 10 minutes or until the whole table is covered. Tape it all together and tack it on your wall.
15. Next time you’re cooking, change a key ingredient and experiment.
16. Collect branches that look like letters on one of your hikes and write your name with them when you’re home. Take a photo and post on Instagram.
17. Take a different route home and take photographs of the new things you see along the way.
