FROM THE EDITOR February is here and that means love is in the air! The best thing about love is sharing it with someone, whether it be your spouse, partner, children, parents or friends. For this month’s issue of The Grand Season Family, we put our own spin on love and have focused on embracing love, life and limitations. I feel embracing our lives, and the love we share with others, can be something we often take for granted until it is gone. I know in the last several years I have lost several people who impacted my life. Now that they are gone, I wish I had taken more time to listen, be present and savor more memories with those that are no longer around. I know the loss I have experienced has made me more intentional in all of my

SPEAKING GREEK? Learn to love your kids in the right language Do you ever feel when you try to express your love to your child, your actions don’t elicit the response you were hoping for? Parents often assume their kids know they are loved, but that’s not always the case. For a child to feel love, we must learn to speak her unique love language. Every child has a special way or perceiving love. There are basically five ways children (indeed, all people) speak and understand emotional love. They are: physical touch, words of affirmation, quality time, gift giving and acts of service. If you have several children in your family, chances are, they speak different languages and may hear in different love languages. Whatever language your child understands, she needs it expressed in one way—unconditionally. 12

Unconditional love shows love to a child no matter what. We love regardless of what the child looks like; regardless of her assets, liabilities or handicaps; regardless of what we expect her to be; and, most of all, regardless of how she acts. This doesn’t mean we will always like her behavior, but our love doesn’t waiver based on actions. Unconditional love can prevent problems such as resentment, feelings of guilt, fear, anger, low selfesteem and insecurity. 1. Some ways to incorporate physical touch include hugging, kissing, child sitting on lap, cuddling during stories, television, or movies, tossing in the air, gentle touches on legs, arms, head, shoulders, etc., back scratches, high-fives and contact sports. 2. Words of affirmation
are ways to give praise and encouragement for what the child does. Since a child’s behavior is something he or she controls, there is a direct impact. Praising too frequently may have little positive effect.
To discover your child’s primary language, note the following:
1. Observe how they express love to you. 2. Observe how they express love to others.
3. Listen to what they request most often. 4. Notice what they complain about the most.
5. Give them choices between two options.
Although it may seem obvious, words of negativity really hurt, and the greatest enemy of encouragement is anger.

4. Giving gifts can be one that parents roll their eyes at. However, it is more about the thought behind it. In a child’s mind: “You were thinking of me and got it, since I’m important.” Other languages need to be combined with gift giving. As with praise, excess gifts lose their meaning. You can tell gift giving is important if kids express excitement when receiving a gift or based on how it is presented, or display it proudly. 5. Acts of service is

Take time to soak away your day Making your time to relax and reduce stress can make you feel good about yourself. We talked to several experts, and here are their suggestions for experiencing the perfect bath: 1. Make sure that the bath is not too hot, yet not too cold. When filling the bathtub, get in when it’s filled about halfway. That way, you can feel the temperature and adjust, it so it’s comfortable for you! 2. CHANGE YOUR STORY Make your personal narrative positive By Stacy Kaiser
Everyone has a story. Our story contains countless pieces of information, some random and insignificant, others full of meaning. Although the facts of our history are immutable, the way we react to them and weave them into our personal narrative is not. Often our stories are connected to events from our past. Positive chapters such as a happy childhood, successful career trajectory or healthy relationship can impact our personal stories in an inspiring and uplifting way. These happy events can make us more kind, provide us a more positive outlook, and even improve our self-esteem. On the other hand, negative life events such as trauma, addiction, illness, divorce, etc., can impact our story in a negative way. These often leave us feeling isolated, depressed and anxious. They affect how we deal with people and circumstances later in life.
You can transform your story. Timothy Wilson, Ph.D. says, “Our experience of the world is shaped by the stories we tell ourselves and our interpretations of it, and these stories can often become so distorted and destructive that they completely hinder our ability to live balanced, purposeful, happy lives. So the key to personal transformation is story transformation,” he says. Step 1:
Assess who you are.
The first step in rewriting your story is to assess who you are, how you have been feeling and behaving, and what circumstances have impacted your life. Ask yourself, “What is my story and what would I like to change about it?” Take time to truly figure out who you are, what is missing, what needs to be improved and how you want to be in the future. Step 2:
Rewrite and revise as you go along.
Take time out to remind yourself that you can take steps to change your behaviors and life. When we forget we have this power, we tend to feel stuck.
