EDITOR
NOTE
FROM THE EDITOR It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! I love Christmas decorations. The lights, ornaments and all of the festive ways people show their passion and personalities as they adorn their homes for the holidays. As a parent, I know this time of year can be not only joyful, but also very stressful. I hope you have a chance to slow down and take a moment for yourself before the kids are on winter vacation, and your home is inundated with visiting family members from all over. This month, The Grand Season Family is full of great ideas to make your holidays more festive and fun. Our monthly focus, however, is on the power of hope. I recognize that nobody has the perfect family nor has experienced an entire year full of joy and happiness, and that’s why hope is so important. Hope gives each of us the opportunity to live for tomorrow, knowing that while today may not be the highlight of your life— tomorrow may be just the day you’ve been dreaming about.
While so many of us are blessed to celebrate during the holidays, I hope you won’t forget those who are less fortunate. I encourage you to intentionally give of your time, talents and treasures to those who would benefit from your kindness. There are plenty of opportunities to participate by donating food, clothing and financial assistance to those in need. I have always believed “it is far better to give than receive” and I think you’ll find that to be true, when you give. Thank you for supporting The Grand Season Family and our advertisers by supporting local businesses as you prepare for this busy season. As you know, local businesses depend on local support to grow and thrive. From all of us of The Grand Season Family, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

HOPE
A GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
This season, share the gift of hope As you approach this holiday season and reflect on 2017, it may be difficult for you, and those you love, to understand the violence and devastation that has rocked our country in the last 12 months. While it’s nearly impossible to process what many have experienced, HOPE is the one thing that bonds our nation, our neighbors and our families together and allows us to overcome the many difficulties in life.
This Christmas, the greatest gift you can give your family, friends, neighbors and community is hope. Hope reminds us that the darkness will eventually fade. Hope inspires us not to lose faith in the dreams we desire. Hope empowers us to go above and beyond to love one another. Hope is a spark that keeps us going because it offers three key benefits:

Hope builds your selfconfidence and inspires you to believe you are capable of achieving great things by enabling you to aim higher and work smarter. Hope recalibrates your mindset and makes you believe there is a way out of your deepest fears.
Hope broadens your observations and gives you the circular vision to see around, beneath and beyond the goals you seek. Hope allows you to translate complexity into clarity. With hope, you’ll begin to see issues through a wider lens. It’s been said, “Adversity is very big when it is all you can see. But it is very small when in the presence of all else that surrounds you.” Hope fuels your perspective. Hope can invigorate your passionate pursuits of endless possibilities. GIVE FROM YOUR GROWTH
HEART Spread Christmas cheer without spending a penny
With budgets pinched this holiday season, many people are thinking of cutting back on business gifts to partners, co-workers, clients and customers. If you’re one of them, consider making a gift that doesn’t set you back a dime, but could advance your working relationships—either near-term or over time. Here are some ideas: 1. Say “thank you.” Expressing gratitude to others for the things they do for us makes them feel appreciated and validated. That makes them more likely to do good work for us in the future. We then know we can count on them. It’s a win-win. 2. Give out compliments. When we compliment others, we can build rapport and create a meaningful connection with them. Compliments will only have this effect, however, if they’re genuine. 3. Celebrate successes. Take the time to learn about accomplishments and special moments. Then offer hearty congratulations. We all like to feel important. 4. Share information. Give people information that helps improve their health, finances, relationships, spirituality or other areas in their lives. You will have the satisfaction of doing a good deed, and some day you may receive one in return. 5. Offer recommendations. Putting in a good word can help people in their personal or professional lives. Be willing to recommend others, and they will likely speak highly of you, as well. 6. Show you care. Communicate to others your concern and support. Sometimes we may not have relevant information or resources to help them, but just showing that we care can be a valuable gift in itself. 7. Be respectful. Showing respect for others is a great gift. When people feel respected, they become engaged, open and receptive to what we have to say, rather than getting defensive. Chances are, the respect will then be mutual.

10. Pay attention. Many of us listen to others, just waiting for our turn to speak. It’s a gift to focus exclusively on the needs and interests of the other person.

10 Strategies to simplify Christmas Is this the most wonderful time of the year for you? Or are you stressed out trying to figure out how to get everything done, while sticking to your budget and not losing your mind? Bring back the holiday cheer by making smart decisions today, to eliminate unnecessary stress from your life. Try some of these ideas to simplify the holidays:

Prune the to-do list.
Ask, “If I don’t do this, what will happen?” Aim to knock down the list of chores to the rockbottom necessity.
Downsize dishwashing.
8
Finger food, not feast.
9
Stay home!
Wrap as you go.
Who needs to spend Christmas Eve catching up on wrapping chores? Sticky notes will help you keep track of gift contents.
Buy, don’t bake.
Turn your back on the oven this year. Supermarkets, bakeries and the freezer department of the discount warehouse are a great source for delicious, pre-baked holiday treats.
Call, don’t send cards. Reach out and touch someone the easy way! Online greeting cards are easy, inexpensive and fun to send. No more lines at the post office!
December 2017
Focus your cleaning attention on kitchen and public rooms. Private areas can slide til season’s end. It’s better to schedule deepcleaning chores like carpet cleaning until after the wear-andtear of the holiday season.
7
Cut the gift list.
Rein in gift exchanges that have been outgrown or lost their meaning. Limit gifts to children only, draw names or organize a gift exchange.
Cut the clean-a-thon.
10
Hand-washing fine china is nobody’s idea of a good time, so move to everyday stoneware. Simpler still, just go with paper plates!
A smorgasboard of tasty tidbits is easier on the cook and kinder to the waistline than a sit-down dinner. Share the work by hosting pot-luck events.
Cuddling down close to the hearth beats holiday travel any day. A holiday “stay-cation” allows for evening drives to see the lights, family camp-outs in front of the Christmas tree, and evenings spent with carols and popcorn. Fun!
Relax.
Give yourself permission to stop and breathe deeply each day. If you take care of yourself, stress will stay at bay.

KIDS
RAISING HAPPY KIDS As a single parent
The makeup of the “typical American family has changed a lot in the past 50 years; these days, you can find all kinds of different configurations. There are many reasons why a single parent might be raising a family by his/herself, starting with divorce, death and personal choice. Regardless of the reason, single parents face unique challenges that even the most well-adjusted, tuned-in parent can struggle with. Here are some ways to increase your child’s happiness if you are a single parent:
Create routines.
Schedules and structure make things easier for children because they will know what to expect and that predictability will lower stress for everyone in the household.
Load up on love, praise and attention.
Many single parents deal with financial challenges and the guilt of not being able to provide everything you or your children might want. Your children do not need lavish gifts, upscale outings, expensive tennis shoes or to go to the priciest summer camp. Instead, they need quality time, affection and memory-making experiences. Consider free or lowcost activities such as going on nature walks and taking pictures or baking several kinds of cookies on a weekend afternoon.
Teach gratitude.
Children in single-parent families sometimes become acutely aware of things they are missing that other families have. While these issues may be realities, it is important to take time to focus on the positives. Teach your kids to appreciate what they do have, whether it is the roof over their head; gifts for their birthdays; or a parent who makes them a sack lunch every day, helps them with homework and watches their favorite television show with them.
16
The Grand Season family
December 2017
www.grandseasonfamily.com
Pat yourself and your kids on the back.
As a single parent, we are often too hard on ourselves and on our kids. Give yourself and your children credit for your efforts and hard work. Have an afternoon applause session for you and your child because you quizzed him or her for hours and the result was an A, or because you and your child baked until midnight to get those cupcakes made for the school bake sale. Before dinner each night or even once a week take time out to compliment each other.
Connect with similar families.
All parents need some grown-up time, and all children need some time to be influenced and entertained by others. Connect with another single parent who has kids close in age and take turns watching each other’s children, having sleepovers and doing activities together.

FUN
IT’S NEVER TOO LATE Start a new Christmas tradition this year
The holidays are a great time of the year to build memories with your family and friends. If your family is growing up, you might want to think about adding new traditions to your festivities. Check these out:
arm Visit a tr e e f Start your family’s holiday festivities off right by bundling up and heading to a local Christmas tree farm to search for the perfect tree. Chances are, you’ll get to enjoy more than finding the perfect fir. Many tree farms offer hayrides and other family-friendly activities (Santa may even show up!). Hot cocoa is so not optional!
tion Start an ornament collec Capture memories in the form of special ornaments that grow your collection each year. Commemorate your baby’s first Christmas, a child’s special interest, frame school photos to hang on the tree, or even personalize ornaments with names and dates. Another idea: DIY one together with your kids as a fun craft project. You can give an ornament each year when you trim the tree, or attach them to wrapped gifts as a special decorative touch.
Set up a Christmas Eve hot cocoa bar
Bake co okies Invite family and friends over for a BYOCC (bring your own cookie cutters) holiday baking party. Kids love pressing out the shapes and decorating (and overdecorating) the finished cookies. Make it easy by starting with pre-made dough, or picking a versatile dough recipe that serves as a foundation for a variety of different holiday treats. Either way, just make sure you’re fully-stocked on icing and sprinkles!
Wear matching holiday PJs Admit it! Matching holiday pajamas are just fun—and not just for your kids, either. Start a Christmas Eve tradition where you all open up one special gift that you can use right away—coordinating pajamas—and start the holiday off in style.
Give back Make others’ lives merry and bright during the Christmas season. Some fun ideas for giving back include wrapping gifts to help kids who need it have a happier holiday season, volunteering at your local homeless shelter or senior living community and sending supplies and greeting cards to soldiers stationed abroad, and away from their families for the holidays.
Break out the hot cocoa and Christmas cookies—but step up your presentation a notch! Instead of just serving everyone a mug of cocoa, set up a hot-cocoa station complete with mini marshmallows, whipped cream, colored sprinkles, candy canes and more.

All you need are a few basic ingredients you’ll probably find in your pantry and Mason jars. To assemble the jars, all you do is measure the dry ingredients in the recipe and layer them in a jar. It couldn’t be simpler! Decorate your jars with fabric and/or ribbon, and give it as a gift. Make sure to include instructions on how to turn the contents of the jar into a batch of cookies or a cup of hot chocolate.
Gingerbread Granola M&M Cookies
A Mason jar filled with pre-measured dry ingredients for M&M cookies! Give the jar as a gift, and all the recipient has to do is add the wet ingredients to the contents of the jar and bake. It’s fun and festive! 1/2 cup all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup M&M’s 1/3 cup light brown sugar packed 1/2 cup granulated sugar Assemble: Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a small bowl. Pour into the bottom of a 1-quart mason jar. Top the flour mixture with M&M’s, dropping them in lightly, so that they don’t sink into the flour. Top the M&M’s with brown sugar, and then granulated sugar. Seal with the lid and decorate with ribbon or fabric. Recipe to include with the jar: Pour the contents of the jar into a large bowl and stir to combine. Add 1/2 cup of just barely melted (not hot) unsalted butter, 1 beaten egg, and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Stir until combined. Chill for 30 minutes. Drop dough by the heaping tablespoon onto lined baking sheets and bake at 350°F for 8-10 minutes, until the centers of the cookies are just barely set.

4 cups old-fashioned oats 2 cups shredded coconut 1 cup raw slivered almonds 2 teaspoons ground ginger 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 2/3 cup coconut oil, melted and cooled 6 tablespoons pure maple syrup 3 tablespoons molasses 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup lightly salted roasted pistachios 1 cup sweetened dried cranberries 1 cup white chocolate chips Instructions: 1. Position rack in center of oven and preheat to 350°F. 2. In a large bowl, mix together oats, coconut, almonds, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt and cloves. Pour coconut oil over mixture and stir. Combine maple syrup, molasses and vanilla, pour over oat mixture and stir all ingredients until evenly coated. 3. Transfer granola onto a 13”x18”x1” rimmed sheet pan and spread into an even layer. Bake, stirring and flipping with a wooden spoon every 10 minutes, until the mixture turns a nice, even, golden brown, about 30 minutes total. Watch carefully for the last 10 minutes of baking time, checking every few minutes and stirring as necessary to prevent overbrowning. 4. Remove granola from the oven and stir frequently as it cools, scraping the bottom of the pan to prevent sticking. Once completely cool, mix in pistachios, dried cranberries and white chocolate chips. Store in an airtight container.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ A Message from Sue Royer “I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren. Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.” Sue Royer Director

LOVE
KEEP PEACE
In your marriage this Christmas! by Gary Chapman, Ph.D. Christmas should be one of the happiest times of the year. Many times, however, we find ourselves grumbling and arguing during this season more than any other. So what should you do when your seasonal cheer decays into conflict and your Christmas tidings turn to marital tension?
1.
Adopt an attitude of gratitude
Many people focus on the negative aspects of life for so long that they have difficulty seeing anything worth celebrating. Developing an attitude of gratitude is one of the most important things you can do to enhance the emotional climate of your marriage. So how do we develop this attitude? Think back over a day and ask yourself a few questions: “What have I complained about and to whom did I complain? What is it like living with me?” If you are really serious, ask your spouse, your children, and at least one work associate this question: “What have you recently heard me complain about?” Write their responses down 28 The Grand Season family
December 2017
www.grandseasonfamily.com
as they share them with you. Often our selfperception is very different from how others see us. If we are going to move from grumbling to gratitude, we have to be honest about our attitude.
2.
Appreciate the little things
Verbalize gratitude for the little things in your life. Look around you and verbally thank God for the things you see. It’s a simple thing, but it brings to the front of your mind the many physical things for which you can be grateful. Each week during the month of December, express gratitude to your spouse and family for something you appreciate about them. If gratitude is going to become a way of life, we must look for the positive things in all of our relationships.
3.
Move beyond “Bah, Humbug!”
Christmas cheer only lasts a few weeks, but the joy that comes from knowing Christ should last year-round. The next time you hear yourself grumbling about something, apologize to those around you. Apologizing for our failures is one of the fastest ways to get rid of a negative attitude. If during the month of December you replace grumbling with gratitude, you will lay the foundation for a wonderful new year in 2018. ____________________________________ Gary Chapman, Ph.D., hosts two national radio programs and is the author of The 5 Love Languages and marriage conference.

POSITIVE THOUGHTS
THE
SPIRIT OF GIVING I will honor Ch ristmas in my heart, an d try to keep it all the y ear.
ing without a thought of Christmas is the spirit of giv e we see joy in people. It is getting. It is happiness becaus e for others. It is discarding forgetting self and finding tim the true values. the meaningless and stressing as S. Monson
Christmas is the perfect time to celebrate the love of God and family and to create memories that will last forever. Jesus is God’s perfect, indescribable gift. The amazing thing is that not only are we able to receive this gift, but we are able to share it with others on Christmas and every other day of the year.

TALK
START CONVERSATIONS Questions to start meaningful conversations If you want to cultivate conversations with your loved-ones that result in more than one word answers, try asking some of these questions.
Next time you’re eating dinner or taking a road trip, put down your phones and try these on for size. (Don’t forget to answer the questions as well.) What would be on the menu for your ultimate birthday dinner? If you could go to the Olympics in one sport which would you choose? Would you travel to space if you could? Would you rather be able to fly or turn invisible? What’s under your bed right now? Which wild animal would you like to tame and keep as a pet? Would you rather know how to fly a plane, drive a race car or climb a rock? What’s the best junk food ever created? How is your family different from other families? www.grandseasonfamily.com

What’s your favorite summertime activity? In what ways are you generous? What’s the first thing you’d do if you were President? If you knew that you couldn’t get hurt would you rather skydive or climb Mt. Everest? What secret super power would you like to have? What view would you love to have from your bedroom window? If you could rename yourself, what name would you choose? Who’s the funniest person you know? If money were no object, what kind of birthday party would you have? Did you ever throw away an item you wish you’d saved? Who would you trade places with for one month? What five foods do you wish were banished from the earth? Which is your favorite cartoon character?

HOLIDAY IDEAS Use everyday items to make the holidays festive
Turn Cupcakes into Christmas Trees Create the perfect Christmas cupcake with our tannenbaum design. The secret to the leafy topping? Place an ice cream cone upside down atop your snowy white-frosted cupcakes, then pipe green frosting to the cone for the leaves. Carefully add edible pearl candies for ornaments.
Post-It Christmas Tree Whether it’s in your cubicle or your hallway at home, sticky notes are a totally easy way to add holiday cheer to a small space or blank wall. Bonus: You can even make one using holiday cards or Instagram photos.
6 7 8
Cookie Cutters Ornaments A quick ribbon-wrap turns holiday baking supplies into trendy tree baubles. Put a tiny bit of tape (instead of glue) at the beginning and end points and you’ll be able to reuse the set to shape cookies next year.
Make Scrabble Tiles Into Place Settings A bit of double-stick tape lets you borrow your board game supplies as nifty table settings. Spell out a greeting or a guest’s name, then set atop the dinnerware for a kickoff to the night’s conversation.
Chill Wine With Frozen Cranberries Your wine bucket just gained the spotlight on your dinner table. Lay cranberries on a shallow tray and run just enough water to cover them. Freeze, then break into pieces. Add to your ice bucket with a collection of fir cuttings, and pop some bubbly.

CATERING AVAILABLE
Use Photos to Make an Everlasting Garland Display your favorite holiday memories year after year with a DIY photo garland. Use snapshots taken during the season and mount them onto pieces of cardstock; add scrapbooking label holders as IDs. Hang the photos from plain or colored twine using clothespins. You can reuse the same garland each year or switch out old photos with new ones.
Decorate With Leftover Ornaments Too many decorations and not enough tree? Here’s a pretty Christmas mantel hack that involves minimal effort: Simply organize your orbs in a glass cloche (turn the cloche upside down and fill it carefully with different-size ornaments to pack them in tightest). When you’re happy, turn it over and place on a plate for the ultimate mobility.
