It’s hard to believe Labor Day has come and gone! I hope you had a great long weekend spending time with those you care about. The theme for this month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is balance. With the kids back in school and the holidays creeping up just around the corner, I have been seeking more balance in my life. Rather than racing through my days, I’m working to be more intentional about exercise, fixing healthy meals and spending quality time with my friends and family. As a single mom, I’ve had to redefine what balance means. I’ve had to drop the guilt I put on myself for not getting to the gym, or for picking up takeout for dinner because my day slipped away from me. While I’ve yet to find a perfect balance, I know one thing to be true: Balance looks different in each stage of life.
Now that the school year is in full swing, if you’re anything like me, you’re booking doctor’s appointments and making a list of the things you need to finish around the house. As you consider those projects, I encourage you to call our advertising partners to help you get your “to do” list done. Find what works for you
Life is very much a balancing act, and we are always just a step away from a fall. We are constantly trying to move forward with our purpose and achieve our goals—all the while trying to keep in balance the various elements of our lives. If any aspect of our life draws a disproportionate amount of energy, we have to shortchange the other aspects. That throws us off—and we are unable to move forward on life’s tightrope until a balance can be reestablished. We have to deal with any areas that are taking too much energy and put them in perspective, align them, so that we have energy available for all areas. How do we create balance? The first step is to stop and assess how we’re doing; to look at all the various aspects of our lives that we are constantly juggling and trying to keep in balance—marriage, family, money, health, social circles, spiritual development and mental growth. Here’s how to balance it all out:
1. Assess your life as it is now.
Looking at yourself as you really are is the first step in restructuring your life. Do you feel physically exhausted, mentally stagnant or find yourself without close relationships? Would you call yourself a workaholic? If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, your life is probably out of balance.
2. Make a conscious decision to become balanced.
Choosing reality as your basis of decision is the second step to becoming balanced. Achieving balance will allow you to reach your goals and your purpose in life, while creating less stress along the way.
3. Set goals in every area of your life.
Set realistic goals in all areas of your life to assist yourself in remembering that your ultimate goal is balance. Your goals should cover: • Your relationships • Your physical being • Your spiritual alignment • Your mental development • Your job • Your finances
4. Be willing to take the risk.
Being willing to assess yourself and risk change will not only enhance your life, but make you feel more energy and an expanded awareness of what life is all about. Acknowledging that balance is essential and recreating your life to encompass your decision is worth all the risk.
5. Make time to reassess yourself on a daily basis.

Pepperoni Pizza Puffs These three-step pizza handhelds are an ultimate kid
favorite. Bonus! They’re one of our budget recipes, so they’re both easy and inexpensive to make.
Ingredients
• 3/4 cup flour • 3/4 tsp. baking powder • 3/4 cup whole milk • 1 egg, lightly beaten • 4 oz. cheese, shredded (about 1 cup) • 4 oz. pepperoni, cut into small cubes (about 1 cup) • 1/2 cup store-bought pizza sauce • 2 tbsp. finely chopped fresh basil • 1 red bell pepper, sliced

Preparation
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 24-cup mini-muffin pan. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder and then whisk in the milk and egg. Stir in the mozzarella and pepperoni; let stand for 10 minutes. Stir the batter and divide among the mini-muffin cups. Bake until puffed and golden (20-25 minutes). Meanwhile, microwave the pizza sauce until warmed through, then stir in 1 tablespoon of basil. Sprinkle the puffs with the remaining 1 tablespoon of basil. Serve the puffs and red pepper slices with the pizza sauce for dipping.

Preparation Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with parchment. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt. Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and both sugars until creamy. Add the eggs, one at a time, then the vanilla, beating well after each addition. Gradually add the flour mixture, mixing until just combined. Stir in the oats, pecans and cherries. Using a large cookie scoop (6 tbsp.), drop about six balls of dough 2“ apart onto the cookie sheet. Bake until golden around the edges (about 15 minutes). Let sit on the cookie sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a rack to cool. Repeat for two more batches.

When children misbehave, there’s often a reason for it, according to experts, who point out that understanding the behaviors can help you manage them more effectively, especially during play time. “Our bodies want to be in balance and, ideally, we seek out what we need when we need it. When we are hungry, we eat. When we are thirsty, we drink. But when it comes to children whose sensory and nervous systems don’t process efficiently or effectively, this restorative balance may simply look like bad or undesired behavior,” says Ellen Metrick, a toy design consultant. During play time, children who are under-stimulated may seek out sensory stimulation by spinning around repeatedly or intentionally banging into walls or even other children. Children who are overstimulated may get agitated and retreat from sensory stimulation by crawling under tables. Removing extraneous sounds, like music, television and the whirring of a washing machine, may lessen distracting stimuli and improve the child’s focus and engagement in the activity.
Create a quiet area.

However, we may feel hurt because money triggers some pain in us. Money is scary. When we think that money can accomplish anything, money seems bigger than what it is. We are afraid of many things. But money by itself is not scary.
Positive beliefs:
Money supports people. Money can support people by enabling them to make a living, helping them learn new things, and providing them with security and all the necessities required to live. Money makes people happy. Money does elicit positive emotions. You can, in fact, feel happy about money even if you have only a little of it. Money helps realize dreams. People have all kinds of dreams, and sometimes money helps to fund them. Money bonds people. If you spend money wisely, you can help create better relationships.

Alcohol won’t help make it a good night
You may want to save that nightcap for special occasions only. Research indicates drinking alcohol could be ruining your chances of a decent night’s sleep. Even though it’s tempting to have another glass of something to relax and indulge, the idea that alcohol will help you fall and stay asleep is a big old myth. Here’s why drinking before bed to promote better sleep is actually completely counterproductive.

While a drink or two at night can make you feel drowsy and prompt faster onset of sleep, going to bed with a buzz may lead to a worse night’s sleep overall. In one study, scientists concluded that, while sleep may come more easily after consuming alcohol, you’ll eventually wake up more easily and more often throughout the night or in the early hours of the morning.
It can disrupt your REM sleep.
REM sleep, the deepest sleep stage, is essential to a good night’s rest. The problem with alcohol is that it has a significant impact on REM sleep, which can hurt long-term memory and make us more irritable. Moderation is the key to balancing a fun night out and a restful snooze.

Alcohol has been known to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle between your stomach and esophagus that’s supposed to be closed except for when you’re swallowing food. When you throw too many drinks into the mix, the muscle can relax and stay open for too long, causing stomach acid to come back up, which results in a burning sensation.

The fact is, that consuming alcohol, a diuretic, can make you go more. Our bodies generally produce less urine at night than throughout the day, allowing us to sleep about six to eight hours without interruption. Drinking alcohol before bed, however, can cause us to wake up in the middle of the night with the urge to go, disrupting the sleep cycle. Looking for a healthier sleep aid alternative to that nightcap? Science says taking a warm shower or bath close to bedtime can promote a better night’s sleep.

We all have clothing that has been tossed because a stubborn stain wouldn’t come out. Refresh your wardrobe, and eliminate those pesky stains by trying some of these ideas: • To eliminate a fresh grease spot on a suede jacket or skirt, gently brush it with a soft toothbrush dipped in white vinegar. Let the spot air-dry. Then brush with a suede brush. • Remove many water-soluble stains—including beer, orange and other fruit juices, black coffee or tea, and vomit—from your cotton-blend clothing by patting the spot with a cloth or towel moistened with undiluted white vinegar just before placing it in the wash. For large stains, you might want to soak the garment overnight in a solution of 3 parts vinegar to 1 part cold water before washing. • Older, set in stains will often come out in the wash after being pretreated with a solution of 3 tablespoons of white vinegar and 2 tablespoons of liquid detergent in 1 quart of warm water. Rub the solution into the stain, then blot it dry before washing. • Cola, hair dye, ketchup and wine stains on washable cotton blends should be treated within 24 hours.
