Spring Training is finally here! I honestly love the month of March—the idea of watching a baseball game every day is amazing to me. But as a mom of two active teenagers, that’s about as realistic as catching up on every book on my nightstand. I hope your month is shaping up to be an amazing one—despite the chaos of juggling plans for Spring Break. While working on The Grand Season Family this month, I decided our theme would be happiness. A quote by Jim Rohn caught my attention, “Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.” I know that life can be overwhelming at times, but I to be honest, the moment I decided to be happy, regardless of life’s outcomes, my life changed for the better. The Science of Happiness
This excellent recent addition to the podcast happiness space comes from the Greater Good Science Center, which is affiliated with the University of California at Berkeley. Professional production adds to the compelling storytelling. Each episode runs about 20 minutes.

Live Happy’s own uplifting podcast features insightful interviews with experts in psychology and the science of happiness. KEEP CALM Help your child develop coping skills
Imagine your mind uncluttered, happy and free, loving whatever you are doing to the point that you lose track of time, limitations and stressors. Psychologists refer to this frame of mind as flow. Many scientists believe children operate in a naturally flowing mindset up to about age 5. You can, however, regain your mental flow at any age and teach your children to nurture (and keep) theirs! This helps them develop coping skills that will empower them for life, increasing the “ups,” decreasing the “downs” and making joy a part of every day. Research indicates coping has to do with how you manage your mental and physical energy. The goal is to find balance. Your mind flows when sparked by high-quality energy and personal motivation. The two go hand-in-hand. There are several things you can do to help your child find their flow:
Encourage Positivity
Positive energy attracts positive action. Helping your child grow a happy mind begins with being open to the positive things in life, and there’s no better way to start than to make yourself a model. Life is full of beauty, love and excitement.
Self-Awareness
As parents, we can help our children become more aware of who they are and to discover their unique qualities. Selfawareness is about being attentive to who you have been in the past, who you are now and who you want to be in the future.
Helpful Habits
Help your child develop these habits, so they can find balance throughout their day (and life): 1. Incorporate a morning activity that launches you into a flowing mindset. Sing, dance or take a walk outside. 2. Balance your energy before and after daily activities. Pick two songs from your favorite collection, one that motivates you and another that calms you. Put them on your phone. Decide what kind of energy you need to feel (motivating or calming) for balance in the morning before you leave home, at lunchtime and again when you get home. 3. Get organized at night. Remind your child how important preparation is in preventing chaos. They’ll wake up happier knowing they have all of the items needed for a successful day. 4. Prioritize sleep. Make it a habit to turn lights off at the same time each night. Kids need sleep for higher-level thinking and to maintain balance. 5. Each day, do something nice for someone. Ideas to make life easier
Make a box cake taste like it was made from scratch. Add an extra egg, use melted butter instead of oil and use milk (whole) in place of water. Mix for an extra minute or two, to really aerate the batter. Hide the cords coming from your wall-mounted television by running them through a length of PVC pipe. It can be painted to match your wall, too! Measure the length you need, and your hardware store may be able to cut a piece for you if you can’t find one the right size. It looks so much cleaner, and you can even use double-stick tape to attach the pipe to the wall.
Corral kids’ books in a traveling library by repurposing an old wagon. All you need to do is store the books spine side up for easy selection. This also makes it a snap to move it to just the right place to encourage reading, whether it’s the garden path or a blanket fort. If you don’t have a wagon to repurpose, installing some caster wheels on the bottom of a crate works, too. Replace mascara frequently. But if you need to freshen a tube of dry mascara, just add a few drops of contact solution to the brush and bottle. Make doctor’s appointments on or near a major holiday every year. That way you don’t end up forgetting when your last annual exam or dental cleaning was. If you seriously need to remove a color polish from your nails, but ran out of remover, try this trick: Paint the nail generously with clear polish, then use a dry cotton ball to swipe it off. Repeat as needed.

Happiness and good health go hand-in-hand. Indeed, scientific studies have found that happiness can make our hearts healthier, our immune systems stronger, and our lives longer. If you need some extra motivation to get happier, check out the ways happiness has been linked to good health. 1. Happiness protects your heart Love and happiness may not actually originate in the heart, but they are good for it. Researchers have found that happiness predicts lower heart rate and blood pressure. In the study, participants rated their happiness over 30 times in one day and then again three years later. The initially happiest participants had a lower heart rate on follow-up (about six beats slower per minute), and the happiest participants during the followup had better blood pressure.
2. Happiness strengthens your immune system Do you know a grumpy person who always seems to be getting sick? That may be no coincidence: Research is now finding a link between happiness and a stronger immune system. In an experiment, 350 adults volunteered to get exposed to the common cold. Before exposure, researchers called them six times in two weeks and asked how much they had experienced nine positive emotions—such as feeling energetic, pleased, and calm—that day. After five days in quarantine, the participants with the most positive emotions were less likely to have developed a cold.
3. Happiness combats stress Stress is not only upsetting on a psychological level, but also triggers biological changes in our hormones and blood pressure. Happiness seems to temper these effects, or at least help us recover more quickly.
4. Happy people have fewer aches and pains. A recent study asked participants to rate their recent experience of positive emotions, then (five weeks later) how much they had experienced negative symptoms like muscle strain, dizziness, and heartburn since the study began. People who reported the highest levels of positive emotion at the beginning actually became healthier over the course of the study, and ended up healthier than their unhappy counterparts
5. Happiness combats disease and disability Happiness is associated with improvements in more severe, long-term conditions as well, not just shorter-term aches and pains.

You can also call an expert and get their opinion on whether the project you want to try should be attempted by and executed by a person with your skill set. Start small and keep your first projects manageable. Taking on a kitchen remodel alone, is not a good idea. Installing a new faucet in the kitchen can be a challenging task and can easily be executed in a small amount of time. And it will make a big impact in your kitchen.

Make a list
Take the checklist to the store to get all of the materials. Plan the project out on paper, before you ever start the work. It will save multiple trips to the home improvement or craft store which can become timely and frustrating.
Get it done
For small projects like painting a picture frame or wall, pick a day to make it happen. For bigger more ambitious projects, dedicate a weekend (or a month) to the task, and ask friends and family to help. As long as there is a plan and a timeline for executing multi-stepped projects, it can be challenging and fun. Now step back and take pride in what you have accomplished for your home. THRIVE Be happy at work!
by Michelle McQuaid When it comes to work, most of us long to be a little happier. But changing jobs, changing bosses, or simply finding more joy amid all the tasks on our to-do list often feels beyond our grasp. Many of us are so busy that we are just trying to keep our heads above water. We don’t have the time, let alone energy, to improve our current situation. But what if there were a busy-proof way to start doing more of what you do best each day, regardless of what your job description or your boss might say? A growing body of research suggests that developing your strengths—the things you’re good at and enjoy doing—can leave you feeling more confident, energized and happy at work. The key is to create an 11-minute daily strength development habit by harnessing your brain’s neurological habit loop of cue, routine and reward. Here are the five habits that have helped the most people create significant changes in both their performance and wellbeing at work: Creativity: When I wake up (cue), I will spend 10 minutes writing out any problems I’m facing as concisely as possible and then list as many possible creative solutions as I can before identifying one to try that day (routine). I will then place a sticker on my reward chart and when full, treat myself to a massage (reward). Hope: Each morning when I go to get my morning coffee (cue), I’ll take 10 minutes to check in with one of my more hopeful colleagues and see what they’re excited about at the moment (routine). Then I’ll finish my coffee (reward). Diligence: When I get to work (cue), I’ll review my to-do list to ensure that I can still deliver on each of the tasks and if changes need to be made, I’ll update all concerned, so people know they can trust my word and plan accordingly (routine). My reward will be my morning green tea (reward).
