Summer’s officially over! School has started, and it’s time to navigate new bedtimes, friends, opportunities and expectations. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been a little bit anxious as both my boys are starting at new schools. My youngest will be starting his sophomore year, while my oldest is heading off to college and dorm life. I pray daily that students will be nice to them, and they will make great new friends. I’ve realized, however, my worrying gets me nowhere. I recently came across this quote from Saint Francis de Sales: Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset. It’s amazing how a few simple words can change your approach and attitude. While my to-do list is ever growing, I’m not stressing about checking things off. I’m moving through each item with a
calm spirit (at least trying). This month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is focused on destressing and finding your calm. As your juggle your responsibilities this month, I hope the content in this issue will provide you with tools to help you experience calm, even on the busiest days! Don’t let stress sabotage your relationship “Stress impacts our love relationships more than we are aware of or acknowledge,” according to Judy Ford, L.C.S.W. “Stress has become such a normal part of daily life that partners become immune to the symptoms and warning signs,” she says. Ignoring stress only ignites it. “Even when a couple tries to ignore stress, like static in the air, it is felt and absorbed.” If partners do talk about being stressed, they may not know what to do about it, Ford added. Also, “stress is contagious.” Ford compared stress to a game of ping-pong, where the tension “bounces back and forth between partners.” Partners become both unable to relax and enjoy each other, she said. Stress “shows up in our actions, our behavior, and in both verbal and non-verbal communications,” so it’s bound to not only affect both partners but also their relationship.

Ford shares the following advice for protecting your relationship from stress.
1. Recognize stress symptoms Couples often become so accustomed to unchecked stress that they barely recognize it. So how do you know when your partner (or you) is stressed? Look for these signs: one or both partners are snappy, cranky, withdrawn, moody, pouty, teary, ornery, angry, restless, hyper, agitated, overly August 2019
excited. Or, one or both partners are selfmedicating with drugs, alcohol, food, etc.
2. Listen Learn how to listen. We all want the person we love to listen and understand what we’re going through. Unfortunately, listening is a skill few people actually do well, so make an effort to learn how to become an active listener.
3. Comfort Many partners forget to console their significant other and instead try to problem
solve. But, as Ford said, “Comfort each other first, problem solve second.” That’s because your partner might be looking for stress relief rather than a nitty-gritty brainstorming session. Just hugging and gently touching your partner can provide that relief.
4. Ask your partner what you can do. An important way of supporting your loved one is to ask them flatout how you can help. According to Ford, you might say: “Is there

Stress is a normal part of life, but sometimes it can be overwhelming. When you feel like you’re in the middle of a hurricane, take a moment to practice these ideas.
Just breathe
Your body already has a built-in stress fighter: Your mind and your lungs. Focus on breathing slowly. Feel each breath. Try “grounding” yourself by taking stock of your surroundings and engaging your five senses. Tell yourself, “I feel my feet are planted on the ground,” “I hear the television is on in the background” or whatever else you’re noticing about the present moment. This may help ease your stress.

Exercise. . . even if it’s just walking—can affect your mental health in profound ways. But you may be missing out on a few added perks by keeping your workout indoors. Research shows taking a walk in nature can alleviate depressive symptoms and significantly increase your mood. There’s something to be said for a little sunshine with your stroll.
Try new experiences

Here are some ideas recommended by Johns Hopkins for handling your anger in healthy ways.
HEALTH
CALM, COOL & COLLECTED Stay calm for your heart’s sake Don’t get mad—stay healthy. People who feel angry often, and fail to deal with their anger, are more likely to have heart problems, including a heart attack, according to research from Johns Hopkins and other leading health institutions. The incidence of heart attack was almost five times higher in the two hours after an angry outburst, and the risk of stroke increased threefold, found one 2014 study in European Heart Journal. The study showed that the more intense or frequent the blowups, the higher one’s heart risks. What’s the connection? Anger results in the increased production of stress hormones called catecholamines. These hormones increase blood pressure and play a role in the development of artery-clogging plaque, which over the course of many years can lead to coronary artery disease.
Step back
Taking a brief time-out from a situation that makes you mad can help you think through it more logically. Count to 10 or walk away. This simple step can help you break a habit of hair-trigger reactions.
Aim for assertive, not aggressive
You can stand up for yourself and make your feelings known without shouting, pointing fingers, making threats and shaking your fist.
Reduce your risks
If you’re prone to anger, it’s a good idea to work on controlling broad risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol.
Talk to your doctor
In addition to managing the heart risk factors you’re capable of controlling, such as high cholesterol, if you have a history of heart disease and trouble managing anger, there’s some evidence that beta-blockers may reduce your risk of heart attack. Your doctor may also be able to point you toward anger-management classes or therapy to help you learn other constructive ways to react.
“But the harmful effects of anger can also occur quickly,” says Johns Hopkins expert Ilan Wittstein, M.D. “A sudden surge of catecholamines during fits of anger can cause heart attacks, lethal heart rhythms and rapid weakening of the heart muscle itself, a condition known as stress cardiomyopathy or broken heart syndrome that occurs primarily in women.”

We all worry and get upset from time to time. It’s a normal part of life, right? But what happens when anxiety or anger takes over, and you can’t calm down? Being able to calm yourself in the moment is often easier said than done. Here are some ideas: 1. Breathe “Breathing is the number one and most effective technique for reducing anger and anxiety quickly,” says Scott Dehorty, LCSW-C, of Delphi Behavioral Health. 2. Admit that you’re anxious or angry Allow yourself to say that you’re anxious or angry. When you label how you’re feeling and allow yourself to express it, the anxiety and anger you’re experiencing may decrease. 3. Challenge your thoughts When you experience an anxious thought, stop and ask yourself the following questions: • Is this likely to happen? • Is this a rational thought? • Has this ever happened to me before? • What’s the worst that can happen? Can I handle that? 4. Visualize yourself calm After taking a few deep breaths, close your eyes and picture yourself calm. See your body relaxed, and imagine yourself working through a stressful or anxiety-causing situation by staying calm and focused. 5. Think it through Have a mantra to use in critical situations. Just make sure it’s one that you find helpful. INGREDIENTS 1 (750-mL.) bottle red wine 1 (12-oz.) can seltzer 1 c. orange juice 1/2 c. brandy 1/4 c. granulated sugar 1 orange, sliced 1 apple, sliced 1 c. blueberries 1 c. sliced strawberries DIRECTIONS In a large pitcher, mix together wine, seltzer, orange juice, brandy, and sugar then stir in oranges, apples, blueberries, and strawberries.
INGREDIENTS RIM 1/3 c. Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, finely crushed 1 tsp. lime zest 1 lime wedge
DRINK 2 c. tomato juice 8 oz. vodka 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 tbsp. horseradish 1 tbsp. hot sauce (such as Cholula) Freshly cracked black pepper
Juice of 1/2 lime GARNISH 3 pickle spears 3 stalks celery 3 lime wedges Flamin’ Hot Cheetos
DIRECTIONS On a small, shallow plate, stir to combine crushed Cheetos and lime zest. Rub the lime wedge around the rims of three glasses, then roll the wet rims in Cheeto mixture to coat. In a large pitcher, stir together tomato juice, vodka, Worcestershire, horseradish, hot sauce, and lime juice and season Bloody Mary mixture generously with pepper. Add ice to glasses and fill with Bloody Mary mixture. Garnish with pickle spears, celery stalks, lime wedges, and a small handful of Cheetos. Serve with straws.

BOOZY DOLE WHIP INGREDIENTS 5 c. frozen pineapple 3/4 c. coconut milk 1/2 c. coconut rum 1/4 c. sweetened condensed milk Pineapple slices, for garnish Maraschino cherries, for garnish DIRECTIONS Blend frozen pineapple, coconut milk, rum, and sweetened condensed milk in a blender. Pour into a ziplock bag and snip off a corner with scissors. Pipe into glasses and garnish each with pineapple and a maraschino cherry.
INGREDIENTS 1 can ginger beer 1 tbsp. fresh ginger Juice of 1 lime 2 c. ice 4 oz. dark rum DIRECTIONS In a blender, blend first 4 ingredients until smooth. Divide among 2 glasses and float 2 oz. dark rum on top of each.
DIRECTIONS Fill blender with mango, 2 ounces vodka, 1 cup lemonade and 1 cup ice. Blend until smooth. Transfer mixture to a separate container and freeze for 30 minutes. Clean blender. Fill blender with strawberries, 2 ounces vodka, 1 cup lemonade SPIKED OMBRE and 1 cup ice. Blend until smooth. Transfer mixture to a separate LEMONADE container and freeze until ready to serve. Clean blender. INGREDIENTS Fill blender with remaining vodka, lemonade and ice. Blend until 6 oz. vodka, divided 3 c. lemonade, divided smooth. Transfer mixture to a separate container and freeze until ready to serve. 2 c. Frozen Mango 2 c. chopped strawberries Pour each mixture into serving glasses in layers starting with the 3 c. ice Lemon Slices, for garnish mango mix, then adding the strawberry lemonade mix, and ending Strawberries, for garnish with the lemonade mix. Garnish with lemon slices and strawberries.
