PLAYTIME Improve your health and relationships As adults, we play lip service to seeing the world through kids’ curious, unjaded eyes. And it’s true, that view is lovely. But even better in our opinion is that being with children also means you actually get to be a kid sometimes! If you need a reminder of how ridiculously fun (and just ridiculous) parenting and grandparenting can be, here are some reasons why hanging out with kids is a blast.
Riding carousels. Trick or treating at Halloween, and the vicarious thrill of wondering who will open the door and what kind of candy they will offer. Sliding down the fireman pole at the playground. Catching snippets of the teen shows the kids are watching in the other room and laughing more than you ever do at grown-up sitcoms. Bouncy castles. Sucking the helium out of balloons and then singing “Happy Birthday” in your leprechaun voice. Jumping on a trampoline. Skipping! Lacing up roller skates for the first time in 20 years and realizing, once you’re out in the rink, that you’ve still got it. Having an excuse to see all the latest animated kids movies. Family sing-alongs in the car, windows down, headed home from dinner. Finger painting. Chuckling at your ignorance of today’s slang—who knew “jello” or “jelly” means “jealous”? Buying Maroon 5 songs on iTunes “for your kids.” Slip’N Slides. Jumping in leaf piles and picking tiny twigs out of your hair the rest of the day. Spending way too much money at a video arcade. Swinging at the playground, looking up at the sky. Bowling with the bumpers up. Living-room dance parties. Children don’t care that you have no rhythm. Blowing and popping bubbles. Save some for the kids! Playing backyard baseball. Jumping rope. Scootering, skateboarding and RipStik riding. Playing dress up with all the clothes in your closet.

FRESH PERSPECTIVE A new approach to solve problems
No matter how “together” people may seem, we all feel overwhelmed at times. It doesn’t matter if you’ve just launched a new career, or have been in the same industry for a dozen years, sometimes we will encounter a situation where we find ourselves “stuck.” Being “stuck,” isn’t a problem, but staying “stuck” is. Research indicates that people are more reluctant to ask for help or advice in a professional setting for fear of losing their credibility. The reality is we all get stuck! So, reaching out for help is a necessity if you want to continue to grow in your career. When you’re at a professional (or personal) crossroads, and you’re not sure about what to do, here are a few other strategies to try:

1. Talk to someone who is one chapter ahead of you.
Chances are you have at least one friend or colleague who has also been overwhelmed and yet figured out a solution. Daniel Gilbert, Ph.D., of Harvard University, advises in his book Stumbling on Happiness, that if we don’t know how to make a decision, we should talk to someone who has just made that decision.
2. Take baby steps.
Look for the smallest step that could have the biggest positive impact or difference. The power is that it focuses us on what we can change—now.
3. Step away.
Take a break. Just when you think you can’t get up from your desk, that’s exactly what you need to do. Remove yourself from the work; it’ll still be there when you return. Go for a walk; being out in nature has been found to have a calming effect. Go to the gym. Meditate for five minutes. The point is to do something you enjoy. You will return to your work feeling refreshed and with a renewed perspective.

It takes a village to raise a child... and $233,610, according to the latest figures from the Department of Agriculture. Yeah, kids are expensive, and we realize that’s not new information to any parent. Are tech distractions hurting your relationship? Phone + snubbing = phubbing
When your hanging out with your significant other, do you find that you’re often talking to yourself? More often than not, when couples spend time together, research indicates they’re rarely alone. Whether it’s looking at the latest scores for fantasy football or lurking the halls of Facebook to get glimpses of friends’ pics, moments like these can make our partner feel like we’ve chosen our smartphone over them and it can damage our relationship.
Researchers have recently given this bad behavior a name: Phubbing (phone + snubbing). Phubbing happens when one person checks a phone, in essence snubbing their partner, when they are supposed to be hanging out together. A study by Brandon McDaniel and Sarah Coyne published in the Psychology of Popular Media Culture found that of the women surveyed who were in a romantic relationship, 62 percent of them said phubbing happened to them daily. As many as 1 in 3 said their partner pulled out the phone during meals together, and 25 percent said their loved one sent text messages or emails to other people while they were having a face-to-face conversation.
Break the phone addiction The fallout of these tiny choices in our relationships is real—often leaving the other person feeling insecure that they are boring or frustrated that they are not getting the attention they want. In the study published in the Psychology of Popular Media Culture, 70 percent of participants said that phubbing harmed their ability to interact with their romantic partners. Marriage and relationship researcher John Gottman, Ph.D., has found that couples with flourishing relationships have a positivity ratio of 5:1, and that a negative event (like being phubbed by your partner, for instance) necessitates five positive interactions to balance it out. Better not to phub in the first place!
Here are a few ideas to break the habit: 1. Establish tech-free times Pick the times of day when everyone has the highest chances of connecting in person, like car rides or dinner times, and make sure the phones are stashed.

Give the babysitter a special ringtone so you don’t have to check every call. Create a sacred space for date nights by getting the phones off the table. A study from the University of Essex found that having a smartphone on the table during a face-to-face conversation reduces feelings of closeness, trust and relationship quality.

CELEBRATE HALLOWEEN Try these tasty drinks CANDY CORN MARGARITA
6 parts tequila 1 can frozen limeade 3 parts triple sec liqueur 8 parts orange soda 8 parts light beer Candy Corn In a pitcher combine all ingredients. Chill and serve on a plate filled with Candy Corn.
ZOMBIE SLIME SHOOTERS
1 ounce vodka 1 ounce peach schnapps 1 ounce sour apple schnapps 1 ounce coconut rum 1 ounce sweet and sour mix Slime: 3 tablespoons corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring Mix according to order. Shake well. Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Shake.
BLACK MAGIC
1/4 cup ice 1/2 cup orange juice 1 1/2 ounces black vodka 1/2 ounce triple sec orange wedge, for garnish In a cocktail shaker, add orange juice and triple sec over ice. Shake well, and strain into a glass. Using the back of a spoon, pour black vodka slowly into a glass so that the vodka sits atop the orange juice and triple sec mix. Carefully dip one edge of the orange wedge into the vodka for a spooky presentation.
SWEET POISON 1 ounce light rum 2 ounces coconut rum 1 ounce blue curacao 1 handful ice pineapple juice pineapple wedge
Combine both rums and blue curacao in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake, then pour into a cocktail glass. Fill the rest of the glass with chilled pineapple juice.
For the blood slime rim Mix 3 tablespoons of corn syrup with 1/4 teaspoon of red food coloring. Dip the rim of each cocktail glass into the mixture, and slowly spin the glass to coat it. Turn the glass upright and the blood will begin to drip slightly.

1 ounce bourbon 1/2 ounce lime juice 1/4 ounce grenadine splash of Mountain Dew Dry ice chips, for presentation (optional) Pour bourbon, lime juice and grenadine into a shaker over ice. Shake well and strain into shot glass. Drop dry ice chips into shot glass and top with Mountain Dew.
