FROM THE EDITOR Spring Training is finally here! I honestly love the month of March— the idea of watching a baseball game every day is amazing! As a mom of two active teenagers, however, that’s about as realistic as catching up on every book on my nightstand. I hope your month is shaping up to be a great one—despite the chaos of juggling plans for Spring Break and Easter. While working on The Grand Season Family this month, one of the quotes really captured my attention, “Keep focused on who and what are most important. Making a life is more important than making a living.” So often we slide through life without even knowing it. That’s why this month’s content is focused on getting organized. I find it is hard to truly live life when I’m trying to find items I’ve misplaced. I hope this month’s content encourages

When you think of zest, you might imagine a co-worker who is always eager and wired, even first thing in the morning. Or, you might picture the Energizer Bunny pounding its drum or a person singing and dancing in the rain. These images are a bit extreme for the character strength of zest, which might explain why most people don’t relate to it. But, zest is important for all of us. It means to activate yourself, to live life fully. It is one of two character strengths (along with hope) that is most connected to happiness. Zest brings many benefits such as greater meaning, better physical health and a higher level of engagement in life. While we can’t all be zestful Energizer Bunnies, each of us can naturally come alive with energy.
Are you fully present and engaged in life?
What does the research say about how to build zest? Here are three practical strategies:
1. Talk about the good
When something good happens to you, share it verbally with someone and not just through social media. Research shows that frequently sharing positive events boosts your energy and zest.
2. Find nature during the day
Take your work breaks outdoors, whenever possible. Research shows that going outside, especially in nature, boosts zest. If you aren’t working, be sure to arrange bits of your day that involve going outside.
3. Activate your behavior
Think of the exercise/activity that you find most pleasurable. Be sure to consider the many varieties of movement such as yoga, tai chi, walking, dancing, swimming, biking and sports. Structure your week so you can do this one specific activity a few times per week.
Consider this: What situations bring out your zest? Maybe it’s anytime you are around your children. Or maybe it’s when you get to spend time on a work project you love. Or perhaps practicing your favorite hobby. We all have moments in which a higher amount of energy is flowing within and from us. And, if you are mindful of these moments, you can create more.

An organized pantry will save you time in the kitchen.
Keeping your pantry organized and stocked will make meal preparation that much easier. A pantry is home to food product, but if you are like most people, you are probably storing more than just food in there. In an organized pantry you should be able to see everything in it. If you can’t see it, you won’t use it and you will waste money buying the same product again and again.

Try these tips to tame your pantry: • Toss all expired and unwanted items. This includes bags of chips that only have crumbs lift • If you have multiple containers of the same product open, check the containers to make sure they are still good and then combine them if possible. • Gather loose packets of food (snacks bars, single serving bags) and put them in storage containers such as a basket stackable container or re-sealable plastic storage bags. Use one storage container per category. • Sort through the remaining item and group things by zone. The zones could be baking, snacks, lunch items, and week night meal ingredients. • Organize your pantry from the most used items to least used items. Mr. Jeff Edelman is a psychiatric nurse practitioner who is double board certified as a Family Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and a Child and Adolescent Psychiatric-Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist. Though playtime may not pop to mind when you list the essentials for family happiness, it’s one of the best things you can share with your partner or kids. “It connects family members to each other,” says marriage and family therapist Marie HartwellWalker, Ed.D. She recommends playing games of all kinds together, from parcheesi to ping-pong, tiddlywinks to tag. “It teaches sportsmanship. It teaches vocabulary and communication, as well as important social skills— patience, respect and honesty.”

It’s easier to face life’s setbacks if you’ve seen Mom shrug it off when she flubs a Frisbee toss, or Dad laugh when his golf ball lands in the water, Marie says. Of course, in this era of packed schedules and multiple jobs, making time for games can feel tricky. “One of the ways to deal with that is to reset your priorities,” Marie points out. Cook simpler meals. Cut back on housework.

Another key to playing more: Put regular game nights on your calendar. “Institutionalizing anything makes sure it happens,” Marie says. What games are right for your family?

“The main thing I would stress is that they need to be age appropriate to the child, not the adult—and as the child grows, you should introduce more games that require the kid to stretch,” Marie says. Often the best games are spurof-the-moment: improv games, say, where you play characters (spies, advice experts) over dinner or at the supermarket; spoken word games that involve rhymes or synonyms; even cleanup games (two points each time you toss a pair of undies in the hamper!) And in the end, it’s play itself, more than any specific game, that matters. “It’s the fact that this is family time,” Marie says. Memories of family games “will last through your children’s lives. These are the ties that bind.”
