FROM THE EDITOR Over spring break, I had the opportunity to take my 14-year-old son, Keegan, on his first trip to a thirdworld community. We traveled with my360project to Vincente Guerro in Baja, Mexico to build and distribute shoes to needy children. The community we visited was only a couple hundred miles south of Tijuana. It was overwhelming to see families living in conditions most Americans wouldn’t consider leaving their pets in. I admit, the initial arrival in Mexico shocked my son and I both, but as we got to know the families we were there to serve, we realized how much we are alike. Kids love to throw balls, mothers worry if their children have enough food and fathers worry about doing their best to provide for their families. Much of this month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is about success, but I realize that success isn’t money, possessions or accolades—it’s about being the best person you can be. Life is not a competition, but rather a journey that allows us to engage with unique people
who have the opportunity to help shape us into the people we are going to be. I hope this month’s issue inspires you to accomplish a goal you’ve been putting off or encourage a friend to take a leap and do that thing on their bucket-list. Regardless of what life throws at you, I hope you know, no matter how messy your life seems, there’s always someone dreaming for a life more like yours. If you’re lacking motivation, don’t be discouraged. Even the biggest stars, richest businesspeople or the most accomplished athletes get lost sometimes. If you feel stuck, try these tips to ignite your curiosity and motivation for achieving your goal.
While you probably have a lot of thoughts in your head, you have a choice of which ones to focus on: your fears and doubts—or the ones that will move you forward (trying new things or stepping out of your comfort zone).
Focus on commitment— not motivation
When things go well, positive energy seems easy to harness. However, when you are experiencing difficulties, you need even more energy—which requires changing your situation. If you don’t like your work, use your imagination to find something positive to motivate you to finish the task at hand.
Just how committed are you to your goal? How important is it for you, and what are you willing to sacrifice in order to achieve it? If you find yourself fully committed, motivation will follow.
Seek knowledge— not results
Get rid of distractions
If you focus on the excitement of discovery, improving, exploring and experimenting, your motivation will always be fueled. If you focus only on results, your motivation will be like weather—it will die the minute you hit a storm. The key is to focus on the journey, not the destination. Small things build a successful relationship
1. Tell your partner what you ate for lunch. Or shoot them an email about your boss’ wacky tie. Or send them a Snapchat pic of any of the other random, meaningless, and mundane things that you noticed throughout the day. Keeping your partner up-to-date on the small things you think, see and experience fosters what some relationship experts call “interrelatedness,” a key factor in intimacy.
2. Say thank you, even for the small expected things. Gratitude is one of the most important traits in happy relationships. The obvious reason is because it feels good to feel appreciated and acknowledged by someone you love. And the less obvious reason is that in high-gratitude relationships, both of you will be more willing and open to doing the work needed to keep the relationship strong and healthy.
3. Work out together. Go for a run, play tennis, hit the gym, go to a yoga class, whatever you’re both into. The UK company Vouchercloud surveyed nearly 3,000 American adults who had been living with their significant others for at least a year. Of the people who reported that they worked out together as a couple, 85% said it improved their relationship, and 61% said that it brought them closer together.

4. Get a good night’s sleep. Researchers from the University of California at Berkeley had people take a survey every day for two weeks. The study participants answered questions about how much sleep they got, and whether or not they fought with their significant others. Turns out, people who slept poorly were more likely to report fighting with their partners the next day.
5. Show positive interest in the random things they’re interested in. John Gottman, Ph.D., has studied marital stability and relationships analysis for decades. He found that one of the biggest predictors of a happy and healthy marriage was that partners responded positively to each others’ bids for attention. What that means is that when one person says, “Ooh, look at that adorable kitten!” the other person responds positively—they look, they coo, they make it clear that they are interested and share the appreciation.

6. Do something weird together. Your Netflix marathons are great cuddle time and all, but you should mix it up every now and then, too. There’s research that shows that couples that feel bored with their relationships at year 7 are more likely to feel dissatisfied with those relationships at year 16. But here’s some good news: Couples that participate in “novel and arousing activities” together report feeling happier with their relationships than couples that do mundane things together.
7. Kiss more. And make it count! Smooching your partner a lot is tied to higher relationship satisfaction, according to a study published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior. Mr. Jeff Edelman is a psychiatric nurse practitioner who is double board certified as a Family Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and a Child and Adolescent Psychiatric-Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist. Both of these board certifications followed Mr. Edelman’s training at Yale School of Nursing and The Yale Child Study Center in New Haven Connecticut. Mr. Edelman has been practicing for over 15 years in the public, private, and Military settings. Jeff received his undergraduate degree from Wesley College earning a Bachelors of Science in Biblical Literature as school Valedictorian. He received his graduate degree from Yale University School of Nursing, earning a Masters of Science in Nursing with honors. He strives to provide the highest quality of care to children, adolescents, adults, military, first responders, and their families.
