NOTE
FROM THE EDITOR November is full of reminders to count our blessings, and numerous opportunities to reconnect with loved ones. As a parent, I have tried to make it my goal to remind my young men about the importance of counting our blessings daily, since we never know what tomorrow will bring. Recently our family experienced the loss of a sweet friend due to a senseless act of violence. Upon hearing the news, I was paralyzed by shock and sadness. Despite my response, my kids gave me a wonderful gift—rather than asking hard questions and trying to make sense of the violence, they began sharing their favorite memories of our friend, reminding me of how she lived a life full of love and gratitude. This month I want to encourage you to do the same. Don’t wait to tell your family, friends and

neighbors how much you love and appreciate them. Tell them today! Live boldly, and be the person you wish others would be. If you are like most families, the stress of having kids and maintaining hectic schedules, can heat up the happiest of households in no time—especially when it comes to trying to decide what to have for dinner.
Get the whole household involved.
Do a taste test.
However, with a little planning and some cooperation, even the busiest family can find time to sit down and enjoy a meal together. The following tips will give you an idea of how you can streamline the dinner process and maxmize family time:
Schedule a mock cooking class.

If you want to beat the flu this season, a good mood may be your best ally. Being depressed or anxious has long been linked to a suppressed immune system, but recent research shows that a positive mood can have a positive effect on your health. A study by the University of Nottingham found that participants who were in a good mood when they got their flu shots were more protected from the virus than those who were in a neutral or bad mood. Even after taking into account all other variables, the predominant factor in the flu shots’ effectiveness came back to the positive moods. Those who were in a good mood (even while being stabbed in the arm with a needle) showed a higher level of antibodies. This supports a growing body of evidence about how our emotions and the immune system work together. Although scientists are still trying to figure out just how the mental state triggers physical well-being or disease, the evidence is clear that it does. So, whether you’re getting a flu shot or just want to stay healthy this year—think of your happy place and make the most of each day. Also, try to:

Smiling triggers the brain to release feel-good neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and endorphins, sending messages to the rest of your body to help you relax while slowing your heart rate and lowering your blood pressure.
Be bored
Boredom is scientifically characterized as “an unengaged mind,”. Research shows that boredom can be used as a sign to reboot our mind. It lets us know that we’re stuck on autopilot instead of using our natural curiosity to explore our environment. Instead of diverting your attention from boredom, practice mindfulness. Whether that means meditating or simply becoming aware of your surroundings and trying to experience them in a different way, boredom can be used to “check in” with yourself to find out what’s going on in your mind and with your body. For our family, Thanksgiving Day begins early, with our family gathered around a card table in the living room to share a special, once-a-year breakfast. Between bites of poppy seed cake and sips of eggnog, we record the year’s blessings on notebook paper: landing a new job, reconnecting with old friends, finding a great sale on kids’ shoes, earning an A in Spanish. No item is too small for the list.
In my family, sentiments are usually kept to oneself, so I knew my siblings and their spouses wouldn’t be comfortable participating in traditions where vocal expressions of gratitude were required. So, I pulled out a craft project I had done with my kids.

I made a tree from brown construction paper and taped it to the wall. Then I made

leaves out of red, yellow and orange paper. I handed out the leaves to my family, asking them to write something they were thankful for on each leaf. I told them they didn’t need to put their name on the leaves. The kids were enthusiastic. While the adults were reluctant at first, once they read the leaves, they all wrote down at least one thankful thought. I was surprised to see some leaves with detailed, heartfelt lists, and a few relatives filled more than one leaf!

Tablecloth Memory One year, I brought a tablecloth and a package of fabric pens. I asked our family and guests to write something on the tablecloth they were thankful for. Everyone took turns writing short notes on the cloth, and we continue the tradition every year. When Thanksgiving Day arrives, our guests smile and laugh as they read through the memories, while the children search to find their handprints, thrilled to see how much they’ve grown.

As parents, we all want our children to grow up to be adults with character and who care for others. In the haste of life, it’s hard to remember values are caught not taught. So this holiday season, make an intentional plan to cultivate your kids’ character by showing them how to connect with others. Here are a few ideas to help you start:

As you prep for Thanksgiving, try instituting a “thankful jar” in a prominent place in your home. Leave a stack of sticky notes and a pen beside the jar, and ask your family to contribute notes to the jar whenever they feel grateful. Whether it’s being thankful for soccer practice or gratitude toward

a family member for helping with chores, it just takes a couple of minutes to scribble a note and drop it in the jar. Then, at Thanksgiving dinner, you can take each note out and read it aloud. Cultivating your children’s character is an activity that will take a lifetime, but making intentional efforts during the holidays will provide a solid foundation for their future.
Conversation and bonding at the dinner table can easily give way to scrolling through your Facebook feed while your kids text their friends. Instead, try taking a tech fast for the entire day. Start conversations with open ended questions about hopes, dreams and desires. Parent participation is required.
