FROM THE EDITOR Happy 2018! To be honest, January isn’t my favorite time of the year. I find the lofty expectations of the New Year to be a bit overwhelming. But this year, something in me is looking forward to this new year filled with opportunities to create new memories with my friends and family. Since I’m not a big resolution person, this month’s issue of The Grand Season Family magazine is full of articles designed to inspire you to be the best version of yourself in 2018. As I worked on the magazine this month, I was inspired to make some small changes that I hope will result in a more balanced and less chaotic schedule for my family. Like most of you, I have been distracted over the past few weeks by having my boys home, college football, holiday celebrations and Netflix (of course!). The last several days, however, I have been more motivated to get back in the groove of productivity and start accomplishing some of the things on my “to-do” list. If you’re like me and are ready to

Shawn Achor’s book, The Happiness Advantage, shows that most of us have our thinking backwards when we assume that success will lead to happiness when, in truth, having a positive mindset is the greatest predictor of our sustained success. Goals are important, and you may have lots of them, but the best way to achieve them is to start with positivity. So, the key to 2018 is focusing on the good things that will happen. Here are a few resolutions to help you be happier.
#1
Look to your strengths to be your best in 2018.
Be the same in the new year as you were last year.
Why does a resolution have to force you to be different? Instead of striving to do something you’ve never done before, like learn Spanish or write a novel, repeat patterns that worked well for you this year. Your list for 2018 should be a list of “dones”— areas you have seen progress in your life that you want to build upon.
#2 For one year, don’t repeat a previous resolution.
If starting a yoga practice has been on your list for three years and you still haven’t done it, it’s time to take it off your list. You are better off showing your brain progress rather than continually reminding it of failure. This goes along perfectly with the character strengths research that shows you are better off capitalizing on one of your strengths rather than spending all your time on fixing the weaknesses. When you beat yourself up mentally for your weak areas, you waste mental resources that could be better used on your strengths.
#3 Stop saying how happy you will be when you
hit this goal.
It is much better to peg your happiness to positive things in the past and good things in the present. This is scary for optimists who love thinking about the future and talking about new plans. Instead of waiting for something in the future, resolve to be happy today.

Give yourself a money checkup If you want to feel more in control of your finances this year, these are the numbers you need to know.
Net Worth
Tally your assets first: How much do you have in your bank accounts? What are the current balances on your retirement and investment portfolios? How much would your home be worth if you put it on the market tomorrow. Then add up what you own on things like your mortgage, student loans, credit card debt and auto loans. Subtract the second total from the first, and that will give you your net worth. Knowing your net worth will help you determine your spending and saving requirements in the next year. Your net worth should grow over time, even though there will be years where growth won’t be substantial.

You know your salary, but how much do you actually bring home? “People aren’t intimate with that number and tend to overestimate how much they make after taxes,” says Rachel Rabinovich. “Peek at your paycheck and note the frequency. Biweekly means you get 26 checks a year; bimonthly means just 24.” Now that you know how much you take home, make sure you use that money to support your goals. Many financial planners suggest the 50-30-20 rule: half your take-home pay should go toward needs, 30 percent toward wants and 20 percent toward savings and debt repayment.

Once you know your score, the best thing you can do to increase it is to pay your bills on time and reduce your debt.
Savings
Your savings should reflect your financial goals, taking into account both short and long term. Depending on your financial situation, it is recommended you have three to six months saved for a rainy day. As for your retirement, it is suggested you save 15 percent of your salary. If you have a mortgage, you should review the terms of your loan and check with professionals on whether or not it is wise for you to refinance. Additionally, if you use credit cards, you should know each card’s interest rate, and make it a priority to pay off those cards as soon as possible, as credit cards can undermine your financial goals quickly.

1. Flu. A high number on your thermometer is a sign you’ve got the flu. Colds rarely cause a fever, but the flu can make your temperature spike as high as 102 degrees. 2. Cold. The flu can clog up your nose, but sniffles and sneezes are more often signs of a cold. If congestion makes you uncomfortable, talk to your pharmacist about OTC medications that can treat your symptoms. 3. Flu. A cold can leave you a little drained, but it shouldn’t exhaust you. The flu can feel like you’ve been run over by a steamroller. You may need some antiviral medicine. 4. Flu. A headache along with the cough, body aches and fever is very common with the flu. Colds can also cause a headache as well. 5. Flu. Your muscles can feel a little achy with a cold (like they do after a workout). With the flu, the achiness is more severe and most intense in your back, arms and legs.
Ask the M.D. Do I have a cold or the flu? The speed and intensity of your symptoms can give you clues to which ailment you have. Colds come on gradually and are mild. Flu symptoms start suddenly and can wipe you out.
What can I do to get better? Rest is the best prescription for respiratory ailments. Pain relievers and decongestants can ease symptoms while you recover. Antiviral drugs treat the flu, but you need to start them within 48 hours after your symptoms begin.
How can I avoid getting sick in the future?

To keep cold and flu germs away, wash your hands with warm water and soap and use hand sanitizer. Put extra distance between you and anyone who coughs or sneezes.

Overrated foods that may seem healthy
While it’s totally unnecessary to eliminate certain foods or entire food groups in the name of health, if you have grand aspirations to eat just a little bit healthier this year, registered dietitians recommend moderating your intake of these:
Diet Soda Soda gets a bad rep for its high sugar content, but emerging science suggests diet soda made with artificial sweeteners is no better, since the stuff may be linked to a reduced sensitivity to sweets and lead to greater cravings for them, according to registered dietitian Maya Feller. “Drinking diet soda does not seem to encourage the majority of its drinkers to make healthier choices,” she says.
Veggie Chips Newsflash: Most veggie chip bags still contain potatoes or other starchy root vegetables that are fried, making them no better for you than regular chips, according to registered dietitian Keri Glassman. She adds that store-bought kale chips are also overhyped when it comes to their health value. “They’re a great snack option, but you can save a whole lot of money and get even more nutritional value by following a super easy kale recipe at home,” she says.
Acai Bowls Although acai berries are rich in antioxidants that can protect against certain types of cell damage, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, acai bowls are often made with sweeteners like agave and honey, plus sugar-packed toppings like granola and fruit, Glassman says. This amounts to a bowl of sugary food nearly devoid of healthy fats and protein, she says. Meaning: It won’t satisfy you or keep you full for very long.
Protein-Enhanced Food Contrary to popular belief, adding protein to foods like pancake mix, cookies, and cereal doesn’t make a food markedly healthier, says Glassman, because these enhanced foods aren’t so different from their original counterparts.
Seasonal Coffee Drinks There’s no question limited-edition lattes are delicious (and worth ordering if only for the A+ Instagram). However, Glassman warns against drinking these concoctions regularly, since they can be loaded with sugary syrups that can lead to an energy crash. To scratch your seasonal coffee itch without paying for it later, she recommends ordering an unsweetened latte flavored with cinnamon or pumpkin spice mix.
