I can’t believe it’s May already! This month is extra special as my oldest son is graduating from high school! As I’ve reflected on his childhood, I am in awe at how quickly time has passed. Parenting him has been such an amazing journey! I know the job of a parent never ends, but I’m truly excited to see him thrive as he launches into adulthood. When I think of May, my mind is flooded by all of the celebrations taking place this month, including Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Graduation, as well as Memorial Day. Logically, the theme of The Grand Season Family this month is CELEBRATE! Celebrating big events is something most of us do pretty well. But, I sometimes wonder if we celebrate the little things enough. Research shows celebrating the small moments in life not only improves your mental health, but your physical health, as well.
This quote from Alek Wek has challenged me to slow down and enjoy each moment with my sons. “The most beautiful things are not associated with money; they are memories and moments. BREATHE Strategies to beat stress by Melissa McCullough
Stress is just one of those things that’s impossible to avoid. I don’t know about you, but even when I’m doing things I love, my “type A” personality takes over, and I begin to try to bite off more than I can chew. This month with my oldest graduating high school and me preparing for a move, I thought I’d share some strategies to help reduce stress that I’ve heard from experts and through other publications. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a moment and test out one, or more of these ideas.
Phone a friend
A heart to heart with a friend can be just what you need to feel more at ease. Research has found social support can go a long way toward improving mental health and fighting stress by increasing resiliency and reducing risky behaviors.
Help someone else
Volunteering for a cause—whether it’s getting groceries for a sick friend or walking dogs at a local shelter—can make you feel better than whatever is stressing you out. Research shows volunteering makes people feel more connected and can help reduce blood pressure.
Take a deep breath
To stop stress fast, just breathe in. Inhale deeply for four counts through your nose. Hold your breath for seven counts, then exhale for eight counts through your mouth. Concentrate on your pattern. Stress will quickly melt away.
Listen to your favorite music Regardless of your favorite genre, research found listening to music not only reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol, but it also helps improve immune system functionality.

Take your mind off whatever ails you by surrounding yourself with visual beauty.

Hold something cold
Freaking out? Grab an ice cube or a cold drink. Feeling something cold in your hand immediately forces you to the present moment and can distract you from whatever is causing you stress.

Take a walk

Little tips to solve problems
Going to the casino? Carry only the amount of cash that you are comfortable losing, and lock your credit cards and debit cards in your vehicle. You can use a banana peel to shine your shoes. It’s natural, chemical free, and there’s no risk of staining the carpet. Have a pet that sheds a lot of hair. Fold your clothes inside out when putting them away. This will prevent getting hair stuck to the visible side. When putting together build-it-yourself furniture, use a muffin tin or ice cube tray to separate all of the screws, nails, and fasteners. This will make for easy access during the build. If you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things, then you don’t have enough goals. Add the two-minute rule to your life. If it only takes two minutes to do, just do it now. Tuesday at 3:00 pm, six weeks before your desired departure time, is when you’ll find the absolute cheapest those airline tickets will ever be. Going camping? Put some glow-in-the-dark paint on your tent so you can easily locate it at night. After washing the dishes, throw the used sponge in the microwave and run it for two minutes. This has been proven to kill 99% of germs. When taking pills remember this: Chin up for tablets, and chin down for capsules. Tablets sink, while capsules float. Ever wonder why cell phone cords are so short? It’s because using your phone while it’s charging can damage the battery. Child have an annoyingly loud toy? Put a piece of clear tape or craft glue over the speaker. The sound will still play, but it won’t have that high-pitch quality to it. Bring a stale bagel back to life simply by running it under hot water for thirty seconds, and then baking it in the over at 350F for five minutes.

MEMORIAL DAY Teach your kids about its real meaning
Technically, summer doesn’t start until June 21st, but many people consider Memorial Day to be the unofficial start of the season. This year, we celebrate the holiday on May 27th. Many families will heat up the grill, head to the beach or take in a big blockbuster movie. But Memorial Day has the word “memorial” in it for a reason. The holiday got started on May 30, 1868, when Union General John A. Logan declared the day an occasion to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Twenty years later, the name was changed to Memorial Day. On May 11, 1950, Congress passed a resolution
requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. President Richard M. Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday of May. It is an occasion to honor the men and women who died in all wars.

1. Heat oven to 350 F. Grease 13-by-9-inch metal baking pan. Line pan with foil; grease foil. 2. In large bowl, with mixer at low speed, beat butter and sugar until mixed, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. Increase speed to high; beat until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to low; beat in peanut butter, then egg until wellcombined, occasionally scraping bowl. Beat in flour just until evenly moistened (dough will be crumbly). Beat in peanuts. 3. Reserve 2 cups dough. Press remaining dough evenly onto bottom of pan. Spread jam over dough in pan. With hand, press reserved dough into large chunks (about 3/4-inch) and sprinkle over jam, leaving spaces between chunks; do not pat down. 4. Bake 45 to 50 minutes, until golden. Cool completely in pan on wire rack. 5. When cool, transfer with foil to cutting board. Cut lengthwise into three strips, then cut each strip crosswise into eight bars. TRASH OR TREASURE? Make something old brand new

W
ith furniture trends moving into distressed farmhouse appeal, a DIY project can turn that old faded coffee table into a treasure with a new modern style. Refinishing a piece of wooden furniture can be easy, but it does take multiple steps and a wellventilated work space to get the job done. The first step for your project is to decide the finish you want. If you’re looking for a farmhouse appeal, refinishing your project
with a chalk paint is the best and easiest option. Follow these steps and turn your trash into a treasure:
PREP:
The preparation of the piece is essential to the paint adhering and staying long term. Be sure to clean the piece with soapy water or mineral spirits to remove extra dirt and grime. Once all the dirt is removed, a light sanding always makes
sense. New modern paints do not require sanding, but I have found it delivers the best results. Then, fill in any holes or damage with wood putty and then sand the whole piece lightly again. After the sanding is completed use a tack cloth to remove all dust particles.
SEAL:
Although chalk paint doesn’t require a sealing, I’ve found using a wax or a protective finish after painting makes the finished piece look nicer.
ACCESSORIZE:
Once the piece is finished, accessorize it! Tables and cabinets need great updated handles and hardware to elevate the piece. Add color and depth to chairs with new pads.
PAINT:
Chalk paint does not require a primer and can be painted directly onto the piece and may only take two coats to cover. You can visit your local hardware store or shop Amazon to get your favorite color.
