EDITOR

NOTE

FROM THE EDITOR May has arrived so quickly and will be gone before you know it. When I think of May, my mind is flooded by all of the celebrations taking place this month including; The Kentucky Derby, Cinco de Mayo, Proms, Mother’s Day, Graduations (kindergarten, grade school, middle school, high school and college), as well as Memorial Day. All of these events provide us a few moments to intentionally celebrate those we love, and share notes of encouragement as so many may experience new opportunities for the first time, and others are transitioning to seasons of life that might be exciting, but also a little overwhelming at the same time. As a parent myself, my word for the month is “Breathe.” My goal is to be present and intentional in every

card I write, every party I attend and every event I host. I love May, because in our household, it signifies the end of 6 a.m. alarms, and gives way to the lazy mornings of summer. This month’s issue is chalked full of ideas for great Mother’s Day gifts, words of encouragement for graduates, as well as some ideas to create family connection through the development of a family bucket list. Enjoy every celebration you attend this month, and don’t forget to remember the amazing sacrifice so many veterans have made to secure the freedom of our great nation. Enjoy the journey. THE ROAD

LESS TRAVELLED “Mothers are all slightly insane.” J. D. Salinger

Savoring those moments in life you may never experience again, could cause a panic attack. Rather than looking at this season of life as an end, let’s change our perspective and view it as the beginning. Make it a point to be intentional in each relationship you have, don’t take any day for granted, and for goodness sake, travel the road that fits your family. Expensive parties, and huge gifts aren’t the items that people remember—it’s the special moments, memories and messages. YOU

LIFE BALANCE

Establish routines to be more productive Routines actually make us more productive, and that’s as true with family routines as with any directly associated with work. Family routines save time, and once things are squared away. You don’t have to worry so much. Let’s take a look at a couple of routines you may find helpful, starting with the most logical point: evening, since many morning routines start with evening prep.

Make to-do lists for your family.

Most kids have chores anyway. Just let them know what to do when, so they can get it out of the way. Reward them when they do their tasks quickly and efficiently with something they like doing, like an extra half-hour of TV or some video-game time, and they’ll get in the habit of doing it automatically every evening.

Prepare for the next day so you can get

out the door quickly in the morning. Make sure your kids have done their homework, and help them if they need it. Have them think through the next day, making sure they have all athletic gear, food and transportation. Make sure everything is in place and ready, down to locating shoes and jackets.

Find and maintain a steady morning routine. No one knows your kids

as well as you do. So if your son is hard to awaken or your daughter gets cranky in the morning, rouse them out early enough to get dressed, eat breakfast and otherwise be prepared for the day.

Work. Life. It All Matters.

One good thing about kids is that, despite how they act or what they may say, they need and want structure to build their lives around. They also want to know you care; and you need to do these things so you have a reason to work and a home to come back to in the first place. Part of the importance of family routines is that they make you more productive at work and more productive at home. Getting the busywork done lets you spend more time with those you love so you can make important memories.

GIVE

WHAT MOMS REALLY WANT

Jewelry, flowers and chocolates are great, but here’s a list of what moms we polled really want for Mother’s Day. Or you could go with one mom’s response, which pretty much sums it up: I want a Wonder Woman cape, preferably made out of diamonds, along with the statement: You were right about everything, and we’d be lost without you.

Sleep

Moms think going to sleep when they are tired on Saturday and awakening on their own without the alarm clock or the voice of a child on Sunday is a dream come true. Plus, it’s 100 percent free!

Clean house

Being a mom is stressful, and coming home to a clean house, even if it only lasts 10 minutes, is like a little slice of heaven for us. Hire a professional for a treat once a month.

Spa day

Mom’s of all ages think a massage, mani/ pedi or facial are all wonderful gifts to show us how much we’re appreciated.

KIDS

HIDDEN DANGERS 6 tips to protect children

of the Valley, Hydrangea, Poinsettia, Purple Nightshade, Mountain Laurel, Mistletoe and Water Hemlock

Even in the most safety-minded homes, serious hazards for children can be hiding in plain sight. Knowing which unexpected items can be risky, and what to do to prevent an accident, could change your family’s future. Many parents know the top child proofing tasks to complete: cover electrical outlets, lock kitchen cabinets and secure baby gates on stairs. However, there are other serious child safety hazards that are often overlooked. Child safety advocates urge parents and caregivers to follow these six simple tips to help protect their kids.

1

2 14

Install cordless window coverings or those with inaccessible cords in homes with young children. Replace window blinds, corded shades and draperies with products that are cordless or have inaccessible cords. Know your plants and which are dangerous. Make sure to keep these common plants out of your child’s reach: Rhododendron, Lily The Grand Season family

May 2017

3

Keep vehicles locked and keys out of reach of children. Even on a day when it’s only 72 degrees, the temperature inside a vehicle can increase by 30 to 40 degrees in an hour, and 70 percent of this increase occurs in the first 30 minutes.

4

Prevent falling accidents from windows. To prevent potential falls, install windows that open from the top instead of from the bottom. Window guards are also an excellent idea for multi-level homes.

5

Anchor it! Furniture and TV tip-overs are one of the top hidden hazards in the home. Heavy furniture can quickly become very top heavy with a curious, climbing child aboard. Securing TVs and furniture can prevent injuries and death. www.grandseasonfamily.com

6

Check before you play. Playgrounds with slides, swings, and other play items that sit in sunlight can cause burns for children— even when it’s not that hot outside.

DRIVING 101

TEENS

Smart tips to ace the road

Summer road trips provide new drivers an excellent opportunity to improve on the skills they learned in the classroom. Check out these tips to get your new driver ready for summer adventures.

Learning to drive Every driver has a different experience on how (and when) they learned to drive. Some schools offer driving as a core subject, others students are taught by professional driving program, and the majority are taught by relatives armed with nerves of steel.

Driver distraction Everyone has certain habits on the road, both good and bad, but 29 percent of Americans recognized speeding as worst habit. Other bad habits include talking or texting, changing lanes without signaling and not wearing a seatbelt. Before your teen turns on the car, put all phones in the glove compartment, and keep the playlist turned down.

16

Practice, practice, practice... If you want your teenager to become a great driver—it doesn’t happen overnight. The reality is takes many hours and miles to acquire the skills, confidence and know-how to navigate the twists and turns your child will encounter as they pull out of your driveway. The more time you spend coaching them through various driving conditions during their permit phase, the more confidence they will have when they take their first solo drive.

Confidence counts Your teen needs to be encouraged they are equipped with the skills and maturity to become an excellent driver—and you are their to help them navigate the journey. If you have a child who is hesitant to drive, don’t force the issue—if they’re not comfortable or are fearful, they aren’t ready to begin this season of life.

Talk early and often If you have multiple children in your family, start talking about street names, directions and driving tips as they grow up. It’s never too early to start building a memory base on things they should remember as they begin their driving adventure.

MOMENTS

GRADUATION GUIDE Gracious greetings for graduates

The number one gift graduates all of ages desire is cash. While it’s not socially acceptable to ask for cash—it’s a reality. So rather than rushing out to find the perfect gift, make your life less stressful and craft a gracious greeting for the recipients graduation card. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Congratulations! Take some time today to think about what you learned outside the classroom. You’ll probably find that much more valuable than what you learned. Congratulations! Now that you’ve graduated, it’s now up to you to take that knowledge and do something great with it. Congratulations! Though you may now consider yourself learned, always remember it’s important to remain a learner. Make learning a lifelong practice. Graduating is not the end of the hard work—it’s just a break before you get into the new and brave challenges in life. Good luck.

Graduation is a time for celebration, a time of reflection and a time to look ahead. Wishing you a bright future. If you work this hard for the rest of your life you will see how quickly the rest of life flies by. Enjoy this moment. Congratulations. It’s clear you’re on the way to the top! Stay humble and remember to be kind to us regular human beings. Wishing you a sense of accomplishment as you celebrate your hard work. Here’s a few famous quotes you might want to include as well:

Logic will take you from A to B. Imagination will take you anywhere. Albert Einstein

You will find the key to success under the alarm clock. Benjamin Franklin

Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today. 18

HEALTH

PROTECT YOUR KIDS 5 things to know about vaccines

No one wakes up in the morning planning to be sick. Despite the angst people have about becoming ill, many forgo one of the easiest, most effective ways to protect themselves and their loved ones from common and severe illnesses—vaccination. There are many reasons people choose not to get vaccinated, and often, the decision is caused by inaccurate information. It is important to eliminate mistruths and seek correct information about vaccinations so you can make safe, healthy choices for yourself and your families.

Q: Are vaccines safe? Safety concerns are the most common question people have regarding vaccines, and it’s also the topic with the most misinformation. The truth is each vaccine undergoes rigorous testing before being released to the general public to ensure it protects against the disease it’s designed to combat. Risks associated with vaccines are minor and may include a fever, soreness or skin irritation.

Q: Which vaccinations are recommended? The CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics recommend patients receive the following vaccinations, given at various ages: ■ Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis ■ Haemophilus Influenza B ■ MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) ■ Hepatitis A & B ■ Influenza

■ Meningococcal ■ Pneumococcal ■ Polio ■ Rotavirus ■ Varicella

Q: Should vaccinations be spread out? The list of vaccinations may seem like a large list, and you may wonder if all of these vaccinations should be done at once or spaced out. Research shows that patients are able to take several vaccines at once without any negative effects.

CELEBRATE

PARTY PREP

Remember what really matters

If you have a student graduating later this month, or next, the pressure we can put on ourselves to host the perfect event, can undermine the purpose of celebrating your student’s great achievement. So as you start to plan your celebration, remember, this is about your graduate—not about impressing your neighbors. Of course, several of your student’s friends will have DJ’s, Velcro Walls and all the other distractions to keep teens entertained all day. Before you jump off the cliff of doing too much, talk to your graduate and ask them how they want to be celebrated. This small question will provide you a guideline for your sanity. As much as the graduation party is for your student, it’s also for you and your family to reflect on the years leading up to this day. So regardless of the size of the party, pull out photos from years past, and use those for decorations. Also, have attendees (and those who can’t attend) write letters of encouragement and inspiration to your graduate, that can be read as life slows down. To host a simple event, there are several incredible items you can create that will look great and not take a ton of your time. So stop worrying about the perfect event, and create the right event for your family. Check out some of our simple ideas:

• Grab some fun decorations in the school colors. • Create edible mini-diplomas—purchase Pirouette® Wafers and tie them with the right ribbon. • Make simple cupcakes and decorate with the party colors. • Purchase some Ring Pops in place of class rings. • Create a memory box so guest can leave their best wishes to the graduate. • Set up a photo booth with a fun background, and silly accessories so attendees can have their own memories from the party.

MONEY

DILIGENCE PAYS OFF

Tips to land a college scholarship

If you have a teen who is college-bound or already enrolled, experts say it’s worth investing the time to look for scholarship opportunities. Think your kid won’t qualify? Consider that scholarships are not just for star football players and valedictorians. From scholarships for dart players and vegetarians to filmmakers and those fluent in Klingon, available awards run the gamut and extend well beyond academics or athletics to a wide range of activities, interests, and affiliations. Really—you’d be surprised! Does your child have a passion for drawing animation? There’s a scholarship for that! Or are they interested in raising awareness about the risks of texting while driving? Yes, there’s one for that, too.

Approximately 50 percent of available scholarships are for students already enrolled in college.

• Be diligent

Pay attention to details. Follow instructions and proofread carefully.

• Be careful Never pay for scholarships

or for scholarship searches. School counselors and school financial aid offices can recommend reputable options. One such site, Scholarship Search by Sallie Mae, is a free scholarship search tool.

With this in mind, here are some ideas to get started.

• Be thorough

Don’t overlook smaller scholarships. Even a few hundred dollars can help offset the cost of textbooks and supplies.

• Be proactive Apply for scholarships every year.

Life FUN

MAKE MEMORIES Create a family bucket list

as a family can have it’s up and downs. Between school activities, athletics, musical endeavors and other clubs, it’s hard to find things to accomplish together that make lasting memories in your family. Assembling a family bucket list can allow you to create opportunities for you and your children accomplish your dreams together.

Yearly, each family member picks one item from the list to complete before the end of the year—and the entire family joins in on the adventure. These activities can enhance your family’s identity and create incredible stories and photo albums for years to come. Here are some ideas you might present to your family to get their creativity flowing.

TRAVEL

TRAVEL HACKS Tips so good they’ll make your ticket worth it.

Flying, especially during the vacation, can be a little bit less than heartwarming. Between pesky TSA agents, crowded lines, and overpriced airport food, it seems impossible to keep up that vacation spirit. Take a breath, and get ready to a fly a little smarter.

Ask to be upgraded Have you ever walked through an empty first class, only to have to sit in a packed coach section? Sure, it’s frustrating, and it really shouldn’t happen, but sometimes there are booking errors made by the airlines. So, if you’ve ever wanted to experience the luxury treatment, just ask to be upgraded at the gate. You’ll be surprised by how often this works! If you don’t ask the answer will always be “no!”

Carry an empty water bottle Buying a bottle of water after going through the security line is almost always ridiculously expensive. In fact, they’re often so pricey that it’s

30

tempting to forgo water altogether, even though we all know that staying hydrated during air travel is essential. So, don’t buy water—get it for free! Bring an empty bottle with you and fill up in the terminal. Several airports are even starting to offer free filtered water. Just check near the bathrooms and you may see one of these handy stations.

You can travel with alcohol Even most frequent fliers don’t know about this helpful tip! It’s true—you can actually bring your own alcohol on the plane. Over your shock? Good, because it’s true. All you need to do is www.grandseasonfamily.com

ensure that your bottles are 100 ml or less, and are kept in an 8-by-8inch plastic storage bag. Just keep in mind that it is not legal to consume your own alcohol on a plane. You can bring it—you just can’t drink it.

Charge your phone in airplane mode Let’s face it—though we generally take vacations to get away from technology, we just can’t escape it! Between looking up directions, restaurant reviews, and in some cases, the local language, we all end up using our phones quite a bit—and we need them to charge super fast! To do this, simply go to the ‘Settings’ tab on your phone and select ‘Airplane Mode’. In some cases, your phone will end up charging twice as fast!

NO KRAZTY KEITH !

“SAYS” ITS TIME TO CUT THE CORD

HISTORY

MEMORIAL DAY Teach your kids it’s real purpose

Technically, summer doesn’t start until June 20. But many people consider Memorial Day to be the unofficial start of the season. This year, we celebrate the holiday on May 29. Many families will heat up the grill, head to the beach or take in a big blockbuster movie. But Memorial Day has the word “memorial” in it for a reason. The holiday got started on May 30, 1868, when Union General John A. Logan declared the day an occasion to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Twenty years later, the name was changed to Memorial Day. On May 11, 1950, Congress passed a resolution requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. President Richard M. Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday of May. It is an occasion to honor the men and women who died in all wars.

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO SERVED It is customary to mark Memorial Day by visiting graveyards and war monuments. One of the biggest Memorial Day traditions is for the President or Vice President to give a speech and lay a wreath on soldiers’ graves in the largest national cemetery, Arlington National Cemetery, in Virginia. Most communities have local Memorial Day celebrations.

Host a Memorial Day BBQ for your neighbors and friends. During the party, encourage all attendees to write a thank you letter to a soldier serving in the military overseas, or draw a picture. Pack your party letters and send them to:

Operation Gratitude 21100 Lassen Street Chatsworth, CA 91311

Here are some ways you can honor the men and women who serve our country: •

Put flags or flowers on the graves of men and women who served in wars.

•

Fly the U.S. flag at half-staff until noon.

•

Visit monuments dedicated to soldiers, sailors and marines.

•

Participate in a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time.

•

March in a parade.
