June is finally here! I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to relax. As I mentioned in the last couple weeks, my oldest son, Logan, graduated from high school, and we moved into a new home. While each moment has been incredible, I am so glad to see June arrive!
Prior to my father’s passing six years ago, he was one of my best friends. He wasn’t perfect—but he taught me many skills that have been helpful throughout my career, and as I’ve reared young men. I miss him dearly, but I am thankful for the time we had together!
As you can image, launching my oldest has left me wondering, “Did I do enough?” I know I’m not the only mom in the bunch who has pondered this question. Tips on how to do laundry
STEP BY STEP:
Sort clothes: Lights, darks, whites
Choose water temperature: Use warm water for whites; cold water for colors. Set machine to regular cycle (unless you have a machine setting for various types of clothes). Pick load size:
One of the first things many young people will be confronted with doing for themselves for the first time when they leave home, is their laundry. It’s an important skill to learn not just because everybody has to do it every single week without fail, but when you know how to do it properly, you won’t ruin your clothes or wear them out too quickly.
How Often Do I Need to Wash Things?
You don’t have to wash everything you own after only one use. The less you wash your clothes, the longer they’ll last. A lot depends on how often you shower, how smelly/ sweaty you are, how long you wear the garment and the weather. You can generally gauge whether something needs washing by how it feels and smells, but if in doubt, put it out to be washed.
Sometimes you have a large load of clothes to wash. Other times it may just be a few items. Different amounts of water are called for with each situation. The usual load option sizes are small, medium, large, and extralarge.
Load clothes: Wait until the machine is filled with water, then add detergent, then add the clothes. Add bleach: But only if your clothes are all white. Splashing bleach on colors will ruin them. Dry clothes:
• Not everything belongs in the dryer. Read the clothing labels.
• Clean the lint screen. Before you put wet clothes in the dryer, check the lint screen. A clean lint screen helps ensure damp air can leave the machine so your clothes can get dry. • Place clothing in dryer a few pieces at a time. Clothes tend to get lumped and knotted together in the wash. Separating clothes will help them dry better.
• Don’t overload the dryer. In the same way you don’t want to cram all your clothes in a single wash cycle, you don’t want to overload the dryer, either.
• Toss in a fabric softener sheet. To reduce static cling and give your clothes that soft, comforting feeling, throw in a fabric softener sheet. Half a sheet works for smaller loads. • Select the correct drying temperature. Rule of thumb when it comes to drying temperatures: the hotter the drying temperature, the greater the likelihood of shrinking. If the care label on your garment says “tumble dry,” you can use the “regular” temperature.

Imposter syndrome is a secret held by many— even the highest of achievers. Award-winning actress Tina Fey once said, “The beauty of imposter syndrome is you vacillate between extreme egomania to a complete feeling of, ‘I’m a fraud! Oh, God, they’re on to me.’” The late acclaimed author and poet Maya Angelou described the syndrome like this: “I’ve written 11 books, but each time I think, ‘Uh oh, they’re going to find out now. I’ve run a game on everybody, and they’re going to find me out.’”
While not a diagnosable psychiatric condition, imposter syndrome is a very real feeling. “People believe they are a fraud, that they are not as competent as they appear or as other people believe they are,” says Judith S. Beck, Ph.D. “People with imposter syndrome tend to believe they have achieved due to luck or fooling others. They fear others will discover their incompetence or inadequacy.”
Fire the imposter
By facing imposter syndrome for what it is, you can begin to accept your accomplishments as real, adopt more rational ways of thinking and quiet your fear of being exposed as a fraud. Use these tips to shift away from perfectionism and move toward a more realistic view of yourself. .
1. Give yourself credit Look back on your accomplishments and give yourself some credit. Believe those solid realities and not your own bad press.
2. Realize you’re lying to yourself Imposter syndrome isn’t about the lie we think we are perpetrating on others, it’s about the real, unrealistic belief—the lie—we aim at ourselves. Recognize that you are not a fraud and release your fear of failure.
3. Change your self-talk Practice rational responses to your negative self-talk. Write out actual rational responses to each negative thought you build around yourself.
4. Don’t forget you are valuable to others Shift the thoughts away from you and on to how you can help others.
5. Take risks Don’t compare and despair. Face your fear. Remind yourself, “I don’t know what I am doing, but I’m willing to see what happens.” When you take steps to face your self-doubt and quiet the feeling of imposter syndrome, you can stop letting your fears get in the way of becoming who you want to be.

If you had access to a car while living at home, chances are your parents took care of its maintenance or offered reminders as to when to take it in for service. When you’re on your own, car maintenance becomes your responsibility. Yes, it can be expensive and time consuming, but the investment you make today, will save you money down the road.

Instead of standing at the gas pump and reading the advertisements for a credit card while you wait for your tank to fill, use that time to give your car a quick checkup (by performing three simple tasks). 1. Clean the windshield. A dirty, bug-splattered windshield is a safety hazard, as it obscures your view of the road. If your headlights are dirty, give them a squeegeeing, as well. 2. Check the tire pressure. Maintaining proper tire pressure will keep you safe and even save you a little dough. Improperly inflated tires don’t handle or stop as well as tires with the correct pressure. To locate the ideal pressure for your tires, check the sticker inside the driver’s side door. 3. Check oil level and top off as needed. Motor oil is essential to your car’s performance. Its most important job is to lubricate all the moving parts in your engine, so they don’t grind and tear themselves into dysfunction.

Change your engine oil every 5,000 miles. Getting your oil changed regularly is one of the most important ways of keeping your car running smoothly. Change the air filter every 12,000 miles. This is quite possibly one of the easiest car maintenance jobs you can do yourself. Regularly changing your car’s air filter will increase fuel efficiency, prolong your engine’s life and reduce emissions. Rotate tires every 5,000 to 10,000 miles. Front and rear tires wear differently. Regularly rotating your tires equalizes their natural wear patterns, ensuring a smoother and safer ride. It also extends the life of your tires, which will save you money on costly replacements.
DIY car maintenance
Pull out your owner’s manual and review the section where it lists the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule, which tells you how often to get your oil changed, rotate the tires and replace fluids and parts. If you can’t find the owner’s manual, a quick Google search will bring it up. By following your vehicle’s ideal maintenance schedule, you can prevent costly inspections, repairs and replacements, and keep your car humming for many years.

The key to keeping your place clean is to break the job up into smaller daily and weekly tasks. Below is a simple, suggested routine, if you live in a dorm or an apartment, that will keep your place clean while requiring minimal effort every day. It goes without saying that if you’re living in an actual house, your routine will be a bit more complicated and involved.

What to Do Daily
Instead of letting messes pile up, making them more of a pain to clean on Saturday morning, invest 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes at night in a daily cleaning routine. Here’s a suggested daily attack plan to keep your place in tip-top shape.

• Make your bed. • Spray down the shower with a product that keeps it cleaner longer, such as Method Daily Shower. Wednesday: Vacuum and mop. Thursday: Clean mirrors and windows.
Friday: Clean out leftovers and wipe down the inside and outside of the fridge. Wipe the microwave inside and out. Clean the kitchen sink.
Saturday: Change and wash bed sheets.
Adapt this schedule to fit your particular circumstances. Together, the above routines only take about 30 minutes a day. If you have roommates, you can divvy up some of the tasks and shorten the time required even more. Follow these routines, and your place will look great every day. All it takes is a bit of dedication and willpower to make these routines a habit, but the simplicity of this plan helps make it easier to implement.

How to Read a Recipe
It’s true (and is often said) that all you need to know in order to cook is how to read a recipe. But how do you read a recipe? These tips will increase your chances of culinary success.
1. First things first, read through the
recipe in its entirety. It’s easy to look only at a recipe’s ingredients before deciding to make something. But when it comes time to prepare the dish, you may find you don’t have a tool or ingredient that may only be mentioned in the directions, or that the recipe is a lot more complicated than you expected, and maybe even a little above your pay grade. If the recipe includes terms you don’t recognize, look them up and learn!
2. Add up how much time it will take. Be sure to check out the “prep time” (slicing, stirring, can-opening) and “cook time” (baking, frying, grilling). Add them up to find the total time needed to complete the dish. If it’s your first time making a certain recipe, it will definitely take you longer than the given time, so give yourself an ample cushion. 3. Make sure you have all the ingredients. If you think you might have something already, but aren’t sure, check to see. And make sure it’s still fresh. Then write a list of all the ingredients you don’t have on hand, so you can knock them out in a run to the store. 4. Take note of what you need to do
before the preparations begin. Before you start slicing, dicing and mixing, you may need to do things like preheat the oven, soften butter or defrost meat.
5. Set out all of your ingredients
and tools. Line up everything you will need: bowls, pans and utensils are on the counter, ingredients are measured and ready to go. This will not only make things smoother as you go along, saving you from dashing to and from the fridge and the cupboards, but it’s basically a chance to check off the recipe’s ingredient and supply list one more time. You don’t want to get halfway through your preparations only to realize you’re ¼ cup short of the required 1 cup of flour.

Developing a budget can give you control over the feeling of chaos you may have about your finances. Creating a budget allows you to make informed, purposeful decisions on how to allocate your money in the best possible ways to reach your goals.
How to Create a Budget
Creating a budget is pretty simple. Maintaining it can be difficult because of the discipline it requires. Follow these easy steps to success: 1) Assess your monthly income. Figure out exactly how much you’re bringing in each month. You need to know how much money you have to work with before you start budgeting it out. 2) List your fixed expenses. Fixed expenses are those that stay roughly the same each month. They include things like rent, car insurance, car payments, health insurance, phone bill and student loan payments.

3) Subtract your total fixed expenses from your total monthly income. The amount that’s left over is what you can work with for your variable expenses. If your fixed expenses are more than your total monthly income, you’re in trouble, as we haven’t even gotten to your variable expenses yet. 4) Set a spending goal for variable expenses. Now that you know how much money you have to work with, you can start budgeting for your variable expenses. This type of spending includes items like groceries, utilities, gasoline, eating out and entertainment. 5) Subtract your total expenses (fixed and variable) from your monthly income. The goal is for your total expense amount to be less than your income. If it’s not, you’ll need to tweak your expenses so that they are. This may mean cutting back on things like going out to eat. 6) Keep track of spending. After you’ve created the budget for the month, keep track of every single penny you spend to ensure that you stay within your budget. Keeping track of your spending will also come in handy when you make next month’s budget.

Romance is a wonderful thing—it infuses spontaneous warmth and passion into a relationship. Most romantic people are in love with love; they get extra enjoyment out of fantasy, idealism and little gestures of endearment. Pretty much all of us feel romantic when we begin new relationships. Some of us feel more romantic during sentimental times or just for vacations, date nights or anniversaries. Others can infuse their days with romance on a regular basis. INGREDIENTS 1 cup blackberries or blueberries 1 cup kiwi fruit, peeled and diced 1 cup fresh diced pineapple 1 cup fresh diced mango 1 cup strawberries, hulled and sliced 3/4 cup limeade concentrate, thawed 4 cups lemon-lime soda or ginger ale, chilled INSTRUCTIONS Layer blackberries, kiwi fruit, pineapple, mango and strawberries in a 64 oz. pitcher. Drizzle with limeade concentrate, top with soda.

INGREDIENTS 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves, slightly crushed 2 quarts cold water (8 cups) 1 quart boiling water (4 cups) 1 cup sugar 1 can (6 ounce) frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed 1/2 cup instant tea mix INSTRUCTIONS In a 4-quart pitcher, mix boiling water, sugar, tea and mint leaves; let stand 15 minutes. Stir in cold water and lemonade. Serve over ice.

INGREDIENTS 1 mini seedless watermelon 8 oz. lemon juice 2 cups frozen strawberries 3/4 cup sugar 2 cups ice INSTRUCTIONS Slice the mini watermelon in half, using a spoon to scrape all of the fruit from the center of the melon. Place in a large blender. Add the lemon juice, strawberries, sugar and ice to the blender. Blend until pureed. Pour lemonade straight from your blender, or pour into a pitcher. For an extra fun way to serve this drink, pour it into the two empty halves of the watermelon, add a skewered strawberry and lemon for garnish, then slurp your lemonade from a straw!
Basil Lemonade Punch
INGREDIENTS 1/2 container frozen orange juice concentrate 1 cup Yoplait® Original vanilla yogurt (from 32-oz tub) 2 1/2 cups milk or almond milk 1 cup ice cubes 2 tablespoons honey (optional) INSTRUCTIONS Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend for 1-2 minutes on high, until frothy.
INGREDIENTS 1 cup fresh basil leaves, loosely packed and coarsely chopped 1/4 cup sugar 3 cups prepared lemonade 3 cups seltzer water 1 lemon, sliced Crushed ice INSTRUCTIONS In a 64-ounce pitcher, muddle together basil and sugar. Top with lemonade, stir until sugar is dissolved. Add seltzer and lemon slices. Top with ice.
