It’s hard to believe we’re more than halfway through the year. With the 4th of July in the rear view mirror, it’s time to enjoy every minute of summer and start preparing for the upcoming school year. As the temperatures remind us, we live in the desert, so I hope you and yours are finding ways to keep cool. Recently, my boys and I floated the Salt River. I was amazed by the beauty of Arizona. On our journey, I had a few hours to reflect on life, and realized I’ve accomplished many of my goals recently—so it’s time to start dreaming again! As a result, this month’s Grand Season Family is full of ideas to encourage you to dream! This quote from Pope John XXIII inspired me, as I was preparing this month’s content: “Consult not your fears, but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what
is still possible for you to do.” So, here’s the obvious question: What is your unfulfilled potential? Later this month, I celebrate my 50th birthday, and I’ll be honest, I am excited about my future. There isn’t a fool proof guide to achieving your dreams, but those who achieve great things usually go through much of the same process. Below are some steps successful people use to accomplish their goals. As you begin to apply them you will be on the road to achieving your dream.

Everything begins in the heart and mind. Every great achievement began in the mind of one person. They dared to dream, to believe that it was possible. Take some time to allow yourself to ask “What if?” Think big. Dream of the possibilities for yourself, your family and for others.
Yes, your dream needs to be big. It needs to be something that is seemingly beyond your capabilities. But it also must be believable. You must be able to say that if certain things take place, if others help, if you work hard enough, though it is a big dream, it can still be done.

The great achievers have a habit. They “see” things. They picture themselves walking around their CEO office in their new $25 million corporate headquarters, even while they are sitting on a folding chair in their garage “headquarters.” Great free-throw shooters in the NBA picture the ball going through the basket. All of this grooms the mind to control the body to carry out the dream.

One reason many dreams never go anywhere is because the dreamer keeps it all to himself. It is a quiet dream that only lives inside of his mind. If we are talking about it then it must be possible.
Every dream must take the form of a plan. The old saying that you “get what you plan for” is so true. Your dream won’t just happen. You need to sit down, on a regular basis, and plan out your strategy for achieving the dream. Think through all of the details.
Successful people are usually the hardest workers. While the rest of the world is sitting on their sofas watching re-runs, achievers are working on their goal— achieving their dream.
When you have reached your goal and you are living your dream, be sure to enjoy it. Give yourself some rewards along the way. Use your dream to better others. Then go back to No. 1. And dream a little bigger this time!

Ways to be a more cheerful parent
Parenting is a wonderful journey! But when was the last time you sat back and said, “I’m having an amazing time! I can’t wait to clean up the spilled milk!” The reality of life is that sometimes we get caught going through the motions, and don’t really savor the moments we are blessed with. If you struggle with your attitude, try these strategies to add moments of laughter and joy into your everyday life.
1. Make each child helpless with laughter. Try to do this at least once a day.
2. Sing in the morning. It’s hard to sing and
maintain a grouchy mood, and it sets a happy tone for everyone.
3. Get enough sleep. It’s so tempting to stay up
late to enjoy the peace and quiet after the kids go to bed. But morning comes fast, and you’ll be cranky without enough rest.
4. Wake up before your kids. If you are able to get yourself ready before the morning chaos, your days will go a lot smoother.
5. Try to cast answers as “Yes.”
So many messages to kids are negative: “Stop,” “Don’t,” “No.” Instead of saying, “We’re not leaving until you’ve finished eating,” try something like, “Yes, we’ll go as soon as you’ve finished eating.”
6. Say “No” only when it really matters.
Your daughter wants to use a different color of nail polish on every finger? Fine. Samuel Johnson said, “All severity that does not tend to increase good, or prevent evil, is idle.”
7. Be a treasure trove of happy memories. Keep the special things and toss all of the rest. Clutter can be overwhelming, and can steal your joy. Limit your clutter by keeping life in order. Live life experiencing memories, rather than collecting things your children will enjoy for a week and then toss in a corner after the thrill is gone.

So, what can you do to make your marriage the relationship of your dreams? The key is becoming a better partner. Improve your relationship by practicing these steps.
1. Practice gratitude.
The key to having more passionate and fun feelings about your spouse is to write down the things your spouse does for you, both short-term and long-term, that make you feel grateful. Happiness stems in large part from gratitude. What’s on your list?
2. Let go of your resentment.
If you have a chip on your shoulder because your partner isn’t helping in the kitchen often enough or planning social outings, those negative thoughts could be affecting the love and good feelings you’ve created over time. Take a hard look at the expectations you believe your spouse isn’t meeting. To get the excitement back, first you have to get over your resentments and strive for acceptance of your spouse. Doing so, will change the whole dynamic of your relationship, making it a lot easier to communicate, connect and feel more in love.
3. Get physical.
Reincorporating everyday physical gestures here and there can help stir up those loving feelings again. Start small with a gentle brush of the arm, a pat on the back, holding hands, just putting your hand on top of his. Every gesture counts. The skin is your body’s largest organ, and physical touch is very important to humans. Touch really can bring you closer together.
4. Avoid the negativity bias.
The longer you’re married, the more likely you are to pay attention to the negative aspects of your spouse, rather than the traits you found adorable at first. It’s part of human nature. To counteract this tendency toward criticism, you have to change your mindset and look for what is good. It’s not always easy and requires work.

5. Learn how to de-escalate.
When those inevitable arguments happen, try this approach. One person gets to call “Stop!” It’s called “deescalation.” Put the heated discussion on pause and send yourself back to safe, quiet spaces in the house to calm down. The pause usually lasts 20-30 minutes, maximum, and it is miraculous how you can solve things in two minutes after re-engaging following a de-escalation.
6. Always be kind.
This is hard to do—especially when your partner pushes your buttons. Make a list of the things that irritate you most about each other and have a plan to respond with kindness instead of venom. This will improve things fast and make your partner feel loved and important.
7. Do new things together!
Experts suggest you can increase happiness by increasing novelty—meaning doing new things and sharing new experiences together! Suggest taking a salsa or ballroom dance class, go on a biking trip together— even trying a new restaurant can help to break up the monotony and build excitement again. Tell your partner that novelty works (even in your sex life)!

7 Tips for Teaching Your Children About Saving
Kids often view money as having one function only: to buy stuff, right now. Give a young child $5 and he’ll likely spend it all, often looking for things that cost $5. Parents play critical roles in teaching children financial fundamentals, including the importance of saving. Here are 7 ways to teach children to make smart money choices:
1. Bring out the piggy banks.
Have children divide their money into three banks or jars for spending, saving and giving. This helps them understand spending is not the only use for money. To make the rewards of saving more concrete, consider matching some of their saved funds.
2. Give your child opportunities to earn.
Consider paying your child an age-appropriate allowance. You may decide to tie it to chores, or simply provide a small stipend without conditions.
3. Open a savings account.
Many banks and credit unions offer savings accounts for kids, with low-balance minimums and maintenance fees, goal-setting tools, and even rewards for reaching goals. The benefit of saving regularly will become apparent as your child watches the account balance grow.
4. Help them identify personal saving goals.
Are they eyeing a new toy or video game? Hoping to see a movie or ball game? Help children determine how much their “want” costs and make a plan for saving up.
5. Make family events money management exercises.
Planning a vacation? Give middle- or high-schoolers responsibility for planning and saving for one aspect of the vacation, such as a family meal or an evening’s entertainment.
6. Model daily spending and saving decisions.
By discussing money-making decisions with your child as you shop, cook and pay bills, you provide concrete examples to model. When deciding whether to prepare dinner at home or go out, talk about the savings created by staying home and how those savings could be used.
7. Use your grocery store as a classroom.
Show your child how to comparison shop, checking unit prices of similar items and deciding which is better. Consider sharing a portion of the “savings” with them, to dedicate to something of their choice.

INGREDIENTS 2 c. ice 1/4 c. blue curaçao 1 c. white rum 2 c. lemonade 4 lemon slices 8 maraschino cherries DIRECTIONS Put 1/4 cup ice in each glass, then add a splash of blue curaçao, 1/4 cup rum, and another 1/4 cup ice. (The ice helps with the ombré.) Pour over 1/2 cup lemonade. Skewer a lemon slice and 2 maraschino cherries on a paper umbrella or toothpick and garnish drinks before serving.
RAINBOW SANGRIA INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 bottles moscato, chilled 1/2 c. triple sec Juice of 3 limes 1/4 c. sugar 3 c. blackberries 3 c. blueberries 6 kiwis, peeled and sliced 2 c. diced pineapple 2 c. diced mango 2 c. Halved strawberries
DIRECTIONS In a large pitcher, stir together white wine, triple sec, lime juice and sugar until combined. In tall glasses, layer blackberries, blueberries, kiwis, pineapple, mango, and strawberries. Pour wine mixture over fruit and serve.
FROZEN WATERMELON MARGARITA INGREDIENTS Zest of 1 lime Lime wedge 4 c. chopped watermelon 1/4 c. lime juice 1/2 c. silver tequila 1/4 c. triple sec 4 watermelon slices, for garnish 4 lime rounds, for garnish
DIRECTIONS
Place watermelon on a large baking sheet and freeze until hardened, at least 2 hours. Combine salt, sugar, and lime zest on a small plate and stir to combine. Use lime wedge to wet rim of margarita glasses then dip rims in salt mixture. In a blender, combine frozen watermelon, lime juice, tequila, and triple sec and blend until smooth. Pour into rimmed glasses and garnish with a watermelon and lime round.
