I can’t believe it’s already 2019! This year I’m changing my whole approach to the New Year. Out with thinking about what my resolution is going to be. This year, I’ve decided to focus on what I believe is much more important - purpose. What is a resolution anyway, if it is without purpose? Over the holidays, I spent some time working on my goals for 2019. As I reflect on my goals, I realize each one is strongly linked to what I feel my purpose is for this next chapter of my life. To be honest, I think identifying one’s purpose can be a daunting task, but this statement made the process more manageable for me. “Purpose is not a destination, but rather the fuel that gets us to wherever we want to go.” Where do you want to go in 2019? How do you want to grow? In this issue of The Grand Season Family, there are several articles to help you process these questions. I hope you’ll let me know where you are headed. You can always reach me via email at melissa@ thegrandseason.com. As I prepared this issue, I read a study that indicated
when our goals included helping others we are 80 percent more likely to be successful at achieving that goal, than when we focused on goals which attempt to change ourselves. The study also mentioned, recruiting friends and family to join you in serving others often resulted in high rates of happiness, satisfaction and belonging. Imagine that! My hope for you in 2019 is you make some amazing memories, savor time with your family and friends, experience something new and hopefully reconnect with your purpose. But, in the moment, most of us would rather have that $25 brunch special than increase our retirement contributions by 1%, or take that desperately “needed” week at the beach instead of saving for a down payment on a two-bedroom bungalow. “Later” doesn’t hold up so well against “now.” To combat the weakness so many of us feel when it comes to saving money, we’ve rounded up some awesome mind tricks that could help keep cash in your pocket for another day.

1. Think of your savings in terms of how many “weeks of freedom” they buy. David Weliver writes that by estimating how much money you need to live for a year and then breaking that sum into weeks by dividing it by 52, you’ll end up with a much more tangible, urgent goal to save toward instead of an abstractly enormous sum. 2. Don’t give things up, “savor” them instead. Giving up something to save money, whether lunch out or cable, can make you feel deprived. That is, unless you change your attitude to start savoring instead of giving up. Don’t feel you have to change your lifestyle; merely change the frequency of your indulgences. 3. Practice the “stranger test.” When deciding whether or not to make a purchase, imagine a stranger offering you your would-be purchase in one hand and the cash it would take to buy it in the other. If you’d rather accept the cash, you might as well keep that money in your pocket. 4. Spend your money where you spend your time. Spend your money where you spend your time. If you spend a lot of time on your feet, invest in decent, comfortable shoes regardless of the extra cost. If you drive a long way regularly, spend money on the inside of the car and how it feels to [drive] the car over how it looks. When you start thinking like that, you also start to notice the superficial stuff you overspend on. 5. Use the “urgency test” when shopping.

Other resolutions included eating better, exercising more, spending quality time with family and friends and to stop smoking. You may already know from your own experience, 80 percent of these resolutions fail by February. Most of us don’t follow through with our goals— especially health goals. Learning how to change is perhaps the most important thing we can do for our health in 2019.

REFRESH YOUR SPACE Find inspiration in every room
As you put away your holiday decorations, it’s a perfect time to refresh your space for the new year. As you put your best foot forward in 2019, perhaps changing your environment will help motivate you. It doesn’t take a lot of money, or time. Simply try one or more of these ideas to restart and refresh your home.

REDESIGN
Now the fun happens. Move the furniture into a new position. Rehang the art on the walls. Mix up the accessories on your shelves. No need to purchase anything. Go “shop” in other rooms in your home to add to your collections. Not inspired, then call a professional. (I would love to help you redesign any space with a fresh new take.)
We all have that “Honey Do” list, but how many of us actually do it!! Repair what is broken in your home. Fix that broken towel rack, touch up that chipped paint, repair drywall cracks. If you can’t do it, call a handyman to get the job done!

CLEAN IT
Everyone has that old chair or stained pillow in a room. Let it go! Update the textiles and perk up the fabrics. Embrace your “DIY self” and recover a chair pad, sew a pillow or a new curtain. New fabrics can be found on sale, and really do change the feel of an entire room. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns and colors. Let that new painted piece guide you to a more exciting color pallet.
Once the broken items are fixed, really clean the space. Throw the dusty curtains in the dryer. Wipe down the horizontal surfaces and throw away the clutter. Clean the floors and the carpets. Wash the windows. A fresh start requires a clean slate.
Paint something! Painting doesn’t need to just happen on the walls. Start small. Paint a picture frame or a ceramic pot. Paint a chair or door a vivid color and see how it sparks life into a room. Adding a new punch of color to a drab space can really impact an entire room.
