FROM THE EDITOR Can you believe it’s already May? I don’t know about in your home, but for my boys, the countdown for Summer Break has begun! While our calendar for the next few weeks is packed with athletic events, award celebrations, Mother’s Day, graduation parties and more, I’m trying to slow down to savor each moment I have with my boys. The Grand Season Family’s focus this month is on Influence. While I was preparing content for the magazine, I was struck by the power of this quote by Bob Keeshan: “Parents are the ultimate role models for children. Every word, movement and action has an effect. No other person or outside force has a greater influence on a child than the parent.“ I will say that my parents have had a major influence on my life. My mother, especially, has taught me the value of working hard, never giving up on my dreams and realizing failure isn’t final. It is my mother who believed in my dream of making The Grand Season Family a reality. As the publisher of all six of The Grand Season publications, my mom works tirelessly to continue to grow our business while her contemporaries are enjoying retirement.
The amazing thing about influencing others is that you don’t really get to see the impact you’ve made on someone until much later in life—if ever at all. I think that’s why it’s important that we focus on making every interaction we have with other people positive. You’ll never know how your smile or words of encouragement can change a person’s day or life. This month, I encourage you to think about those who have influenced your life in a positive way, and perhaps even write them a note of thanks. Never forget how important you are to the growth and development of your child. In the chaos of life, sometimes it’s easy to forget that “You are enough!” I want you to know that you are. Thank you for supporting the local businesses that support our publication! I hope you enjoy every party and event you attend this month, and more importantly, it’s my wish that you take time this Memorial Day to remember those brave souls who have given their lives fighting for the freedoms we enjoy! Influence is one of those leadership qualities that can’t be taught in five simple steps, rather it is the outgrowth of living a life with character, compassion and purpose. Influence can’t be quantified, but rather happens through cultivating relationships. Each day take a moment to think about the people you have the opportunity to influence—perhaps your children, your neighbors, your colleagues or a stranger you meet at lunch.
Take up a hobby your child loves.
Take time to tell someone something you admire about them. Smile at every person you encounter throughout your day. Mentor a student. Spend time listening to others. Watch, “Dead Poets Society.”
Pay for the person’s order in line behind you in the drive thru. Coach little league.
Share a favorite book with a friend.
Journal about your life. Shoot Volunteer. hoops with your kids and their friends.

SHAKE IT UP Find inspiration by living Are you looking for change, challenge or courage? Do you feel like what you’re searching for might be lurking just around the corner but you simply can’t reach it? Take a deep breath. When you feel these emotions, the best thing to do is stop looking and let inspiration come to you.
Here are several ways to switch things to help you find the inspiration you’ve been seeking.
1. Write it down
Write everything down: Good ideas, bad ideas, laughably terrible ideas, random musings, dreams, everything. Putting your thoughts on paper makes it easier to go back and find the stroke of genius. It also helps you learn a bit about how your brain works.
2. Read
The majority of successful individuals read voraciously when they’re not working. More specifically, they read books, blogs and papers on subjects outside their industry to widen their knowledge and discover new connections.
3. Find new surroundings
The physical space around us has a surprising impact on our thought processes. Spending time brainstorming away from the desk can be surprisingly productive.
4. Broaden your horizons
Traveling is a great way to see how the rest of the world lives. You can get inspiration from seeing new ways of doing things or discovering needs you didn’t know existed.
5. Fail
Sometimes our biggest failures can set the stage for our grandest successes. As Steven Tyler said in a famous Aerosmith song, “You’ve got to lose to know how to win.”
6. Evaluate your goals

MEMORIAL Teach your kids about it’s real purpose
Technically, summer doesn’t start until June 21. But many people consider Memorial Day to be the unofficial start of the season. This year, we celebrate the holiday on May 28. Many families will heat up the grill, head to the beach or take in a big blockbuster movie. But Memorial Day has the word “memorial” in it for a reason.
The holiday got started on May 30, 1868, when Union General John A. Logan declared the day an occasion to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Twenty years later, the name was changed to Memorial Day. On May 11, 1950, Congress passed a resolution requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe each
Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. President Richard M. Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday of May. It is an occasion to honor the men and women who died in all wars.
