Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” With school out and the kids home for summer, I think this is an amazing mantra for the month of June. Doing something that scares you is something our kids do almost every day as they explore the world. As we grow older, however, let’s be honest: How often do you find yourself facing something you fear head on? For me, the things I fear are often more silly than scary. Often, I find myself avoiding jumping off a cliff because I’m “afraid” of what others might think. This month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is about exploring the world around you. It might be time to take the kids on a road trip to Northern Arizona to get out of the heat and explore the magic of the Grand Canyon. Or, perhaps, it’s time to explore those things inside your mind you’ve been too busy to flesh out. Maybe your date night is caught in a rut and you need to implement some new ideas to grow your relationship. If so, you’re in luck! TAKE A STEP Out of your comfort zone
Sometimes what keeps us from getting what we want in life is our reluctance to change our routines and habits. Whatever it is–you can break out of these patterns and create positive change. Here are some ways to step out of your comfort zone and into greatness:
Face a fear you have
Do you have a fear that’s been hanging around awhile? Does it come to mind and then go dormant for lack of pushing yourself? Think of that one fear that may be holding you back from your potential and set a goal to tackle it in the next three months.
Do what scares you
Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” How powerful would that be to make a conscious effort to do what scares you? What would open up? Start out by making a list of three things at the beginning of the week and challenge yourself to do each one during the week. Make it fun and see what good things transpire.
Make a bold move

Sometimes we just need to throw our hats over the wall and take a big risk for big rewards. The first step is to set a goal that is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-limited. Then create a plan with action steps. Now take one small action The Grand Season family

every day towards your goal, or at least once a week.
Have tough conversations
“A person’s success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have,” says author Tim Ferris. Having a conversation with a friend, loved one or co-worker about something that bothers you in the relationship is one of the most difficult and courageous things to do.
Try something new
A way to step out of what is familiar is to explore new and different things. You can start by creating a bucket list. A list where you write down all the experiences you would like to do in your lifetime like travel to certain places, run a marathon, do yoga, write a book, play an instrument, ride a zip line, become an entrepreneur. LEFT OUT? Ways to connect with your kids
At one point or another, all parents fear that they aren’t connecting with their children the way they once imagined. Your desire to connect shows you care, but remember, as your children move toward independence, they begin by creating a healthy distance from their parents. While this transition is hard, if you allow your teens the freedom to explore—they’ll be back with a stronger and healthier respect for you and your relationship.
Talk (and listen) to them
The most basic way to connect is to talk to them. Tell them about your day and ask about theirs. It’s important for people to feel like the person they are talking to cares about what they have to say. Don’t expect your kids to tell you everything about themselves in one sitting.
Take an interest
Sometimes just talking doesn’t work. It may be a good idea to consider doing something else together. If your child likes to play video games, ask for the second controller. Just try not to seem judgmental about their hobbies. If they aren’t hurting anyone, then you shouldn’t be concerned. If they start to feel that you don’t appreciate what they love, they will start to push you further away.
Find a new hobby
You may find that you simply have no current interests in common with your child. If that’s the case, you can talk to them about finding something new for the two of you to do together. Look for opportunities to do something that neither of you have done before.
Guilt is not a weapon
Guilt is a cheap trick that will only cause your children to resent you. Make it clear that you want to spend time with them, but don’t try to make them feel bad if it doesn’t work out right away. It may take a few tries, but eventually they’ll give you a chance.
Don’t get discouraged
Raising kids is a rough journey. It may seem that no matter what you try, you’re still feeling just as distant from them as when you started. Don’t give up. Remember, it’s your job to love your kid—not theirs to love you. Each stage of parenting is very different, and as your children grow, your relationship will change. The key is to remind your child you’re interested, invested and involved.

Surprise date
Every marriage needs the surprise date. I suggest each partner choose one date each month to plan fully without letting the other partner know. The surprise date gets to be a really special gift from the planner to the other partner.
Adventure date
Get out and get wild! Try something adventurous with your mate. Do a mud run or a scavenger hunt, hit the shooting range or paintball. If you have it in your area try bungee jumping, ATV riding or a ropes course. Check Groupon for ideas and discounts!

Ingredients 1 1/2 parts Maker’s Mark® Bourbon 3/4 parts Aperol® Aperitif Absinthe 1 dash Rhubarb Bitters 1 splash Dolin® Blanc Vermouth De Chambrey Garnish Orange Zest Instructions Rinse a martini glass with a little absinthe and ice, stir and let sit and bind to the glass. Fill a shaker with ice, add the Maker’s Mark® Bourbon, Aperol, bitters and vermouth. Stir gently. Discard the ice and absinthe. Strain the cocktail into the glass. Garnish with a strip of orange zest.

Top with soda water and then gently push down and stir twice with a bar spoon. Muddle the cucumber in a shaker. Add remaining ingredients and ice. Shake vigorously and double strain into a tall glass with ice. Garnish with cucumber zig-zags and fresh blueberries.
*Chamomile/blueberry syrup: Boil 16 oz. of water with 4 chamomile tea bags for 10 minutes. Remove the tea bags, then add 1 cup of blueberries and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove the blueberries, remove pot from heat, add 3/4 cup of sugar and stir until sugar dissolves, then let the syrup cool.

If you don’t have a regular source of healthcare or you’ve never had your cholesterol checked, you’re not alone. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, nearly 26 percent of men in the United States do not have a regular source of healthcare. Reverse this trend with medical tests and screenings to keep you healthy.

Excess weight increases your risk for diabetes and heart disease. Your body mass index (BMI) measures your body fat based on your height and weight, and it can determine if you’re overweight or at risk for developing obesity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an adult BMI between 18.5 and 25 is within normal range.

If your blood pressure is high, you may require medication to control it and ward off heart disease, kidney disease and stroke. If your blood pressure is within the normal range, you only need to have your blood pressure checked every two years. Normal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg, according to the AHA. Blood pressure higher than 135/80 mm Hg may be a symptom of diabetes. Testing for diabetes may include a hemoglobin A1C blood test, a fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test, or an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). A single test is insufficient to diagnose diabetes. A second test must confirm that your blood glucose level is abnormally high.

Feeling hopeless or experiencing loss of interest in things you normally enjoy for more than two weeks may signal depression. Don’t dismiss prolonged bouts of feeling down or try to tough it out. Your doctor can screen you for depression and help determine how to treat it.
MELANOMA
Melanoma is currently the country’s fifth most common cancer among men. More women than men get melanoma before the age of 50, but by age 65 the ratio reverses.
